During the Easter break, 14 students and three members of the faculty traveled to Johnson County, Kentucky in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. The Christian Appalachian Project divided our group into three teams that went out to build decks and ramps on the trailer homes of elderly members of this impoverished coal mining community. Our “home base” was a summer campsite where we ate, slept and prayed with other high school volunteers from other parts of the country. This was a beautiful opportunity for SJB students to experience a very different culture and meet the beautiful residents of one of the poorest areas right here in the United States. Over Easter break 19 students and four chaperones traveled to Joplin, MO to help with the relief effort as a result of the tornado that took place there in May 2011. They worked in conjunction with Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri. The tasks for the week included the complete demolition of a house left standing after the tornado. After knocking the house down, they had to take it apart piece by piece and take the debris to the curb for collection. The group said it was fun and at times tedious, but by the end of the week all that was left was the concrete foundation and a very large pile of trash!

In July, a group of student and faculty volunteers traveled to Lima, Peru to work at the Hogar de San Francisco. This year, 36 SJB students and six faculty took the life changing journey. This is the third summer SJB has traveled there to share in the work of the Hogar, which cares for over 50 severely handicapped children, led by an American, Dr. Tony. It was a new journey for students and teachers alike. The Hogar residents ranged from babies to adults. Their stories and challenges were overwhelming and heartwarming. All of the students who have come to Peru have been moved by various aspects of the culture, the Hogar itself and most of all, the children. The group learned so much through them and from their time together.

This Spring, one of the school’s largest clubs, the Culinary Club, had a visit from two of our alumni; Anthony Muzia ’02 a Sous Chef at NYIT and Natalya Lozano ’07, Head Chef/Owner of ICED: The Cupcake Shoppe. A lot of fun and delicious food was enjoyed by all. If you would like to come speak to one of our clubs, let us know!

Katie Lucie Grover ’02 won the Excellence in Education Award that is presented annually to a member of the SJB faculty. Congratulations Katie! The recipient is chosen by a panel made up of all previous award winners and is confirmed by administration. Katie is a graduate who has a stellar reputation among colleagues, parents and students as a kind, knowledgeable and dedicated teacher. She was vital in starting and still moderates our writing center, she is a co-moderator of the highly successful big brother/sister program, and she is also a mentor for new teachers. In addition to all this she is a huge advocate for the school and truly embodies that SJB spirit which is at the heart of why so many students attend and love the school.

This summer one of our recent graduates from the Class of 2012, Krystal McLeod, competed at the NAACP ACT SO Nationals in Houston, Texas. ACT SO is a branch of the NAACP that showcases talent all throughout the country. There were 26 categories including dance, classical composition and oratory; the category which Krystal competed in. Over 1,500 students across the United States participated in this competition, all earnestly fighting for the top three spots, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Krystal came in 1st for New York and 3rd in the country for oratory and received the bronze medal. All medalists were invited to go to a Winners Dinner where they received free iPads, compliments of the NAACP. Krystal also received a scholarship of 1,500 dollars for her accomplishment from the competition. Krystal expressed that “it was truly a great experience! The competition was fierce and I was just honored to make it to Houston, much less receive bronze! However I do not believe it was just my talent that got me that far. It was a mixture of God’s grace, my family’s support and the foundation I received from St. John the Baptist.”

Courtney Lamendola and Thomas Kinneary, both students in Ms. Hall’s 11AP Literature class were awarded full scholarships to attend The 2012 Alice Hoffman Young Writers Retreat at Adelphi University this summer. Each day the students will be working with accomplished authors as they workshop their writing through multiple stages of development. Students were chosen based on teacher recommendation and a sampling of their creative writing. Ms. Hall is so proud and thrilled that her students were chosen, as Alice Hoffman is her favorite author.

If you already have an account at TD Bank, or if you’d like to open an account at TD Bank, you can go into the bank and tell them to designate SJB as your charitable organization for the TD Bank Affinity program. By doing so, SJB gets an annual contribution from TD Bank based upon the total average balance of all accounts that have designated SJB as their charitable entity. Last year, SJB received a donation of $6,275 from this program. The TD Bank contribution to SJB does not affect your investment return. Rest assured, TD Bank does not disclose any information to SJB about account owners or account balance. SJB is just told the number of participating accounts. Please consider this great way to donate to SJB!

sJB stUdEnts shinE in advancEd placEmEnt assEssmEnts We are proud to announce that during the 2011-2012 school year 70 students earned the prestigious title of AP Scholar. Of these 70 students 36 were designated AP Scholars, 20 AP Scholars with Honor and 14 as AP Scholars with Distinction. Of the 14 Scholars with Distinction two students were also honored with the elite title of National AP Scholar. An impressive 23% of the graduating class of 2012 earned a qualification score of three of higher on at least one AP exam. These numbers represent a significant increase in both the number of students taking and excelling in AP courses and exams. Assistant Principal Darius Penikas commented that “this news is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and teachers”. “We are dedicated to setting very high standards and then working together as a community to reach and exceed our expectations”. Congratulations to all our AP Scholars and teachers!

SJB standout Alumni Olivia Galati ‘09 and Kevin Courtney ‘10 recently returned to SJB

to participate in the Summer Sport Camps, after their exciting college accomplishments!

A three year letterwinner and two-way standout, Kevin Courtney was a two-time captain for the SJB Baseball Team and led St. John’s to the regular season conference championship in 2010 and the Catholic League Championship in 2008. While playing at Stony Brook University, the baseball team made history by opening the 2012 College World Series against UCLA, televised live on ESPN2. The Seawolves advanced to their first CWS with a win over LSU in the Baton Rouge Super Regional. “It was amazing to represent SJB and SB. What we were taught here at SJB helped us become who we are today,” said Kevin, while visiting SJB this summer. While being described as the underdogs, the Seawolves certainly didn’t play like that. Kevin and a teammate combined for four of Stony Brook’s seven RBI in the first two games. When asked if he had any rituals or superstitions, Kevin told us he wears the same Under Armour shirt as his superstition, and gives the sign of the cross at games as his ritual. Kevin described how he and his teammates kept their cool composure during the games and didn’t let the pressure get to them, evident by their success on the field!

She has been Hofstra’s No. 1 pitcher for her first three seasons and has also been a regular hitter in the line-up as well. She already ranks second in Hofstra history in career strikeouts (642) and is sixth in wins (55), well ahead of pace to become the first to reach 1,000 strikeouts and 100 wins. Hofstra made a successful trek to California where they went 3-0 in the tournament’s opening round defeating UCLA and San Diego State. Olivia was the winning pitcher in all three games, throwing all 21 innings with a total of 32 strikeouts and allowing only three runs. Hofstra completed a 42-15 season that included its first appearance in the Super Regionals. The Pride won its ninth Colonial Athletic Association championship in 11 years before defeating 12-time national champion UCLA and San Diego State to win the Los Angeles Regional. Hofstra fell one victory

SJB Junior Mark Reilly finished second at the state CHSAA golf championship. It was Reilly’s second straight sudden-death playoff in a high school tournament. He birdied the first extra hole to win the Long Island CHSAA championship. Reilly had a 3-over 40 on his first nine holes at the CHSAA golf championship, but he picked it up on his back nine with a 5-under 30, including three birdies and an eagle on his 11th hole of the day, the par-5 second, to get to 2 under, “That eagle was big for me, it got me pumped to try and keep bettering my score,” he said. The top six golfers qualified for the state Federation Cup as well.

Olivia Galati played softball at SJB, was a Captain, and led her teams to three New York State championships. She was Player of the Year three times for the Catholic league and was also named Newsday’s Athlete of the Year and NYS Gatorade Player of the Year in 2009. The team also won the Girls League Championships in ‘06, ‘08, and ‘09 as well as the Catholic State Titles those same years.

shy of reaching the Women’s College World Series. Olivia felt that “it was unreal to represent our hometowns, our high schools, our college, and the northeast. Our success put northeast schools on the map.” When asked about her rituals and superstitions during games, Olivia told us she superstitiously puts her cleats and everything on starting with the right side first. Her ritual is that she says a prayer to God to give her strength during the National Anthem. Olivia believes that someone should be able to look at you and not know whether you’re winning or losing, and she always keeps a poker face on during games.
