• There will be a second quiz on Presidents and their Vice Presidents in the month of September

I want to take this time to welcome you to the course. It is a course that I am extremely passionate about and my hope is that you will enjoy the material while earning exemplary marks on all assessments including but not limited to the AP Examination and the US History and Government Regents Exam. We will cover all areas of American history spanning early exploration through the present day. You will be responsible to take an active role in your learning by communicating with your peers on a daily basis. Our learning will come in a myriad of ways including discussion, taking chapter notes, writing free response essays, DBQ practice, short video clips, and lengthy research assignments along with outside reading projects. Your work begins this summer with an extensive assignment that is to be completed in the first days of school (see rubric). This will be a 200 point project and counted in the Exam/Project category. If you have any questions I will regularly check my email over the summer and answer you back promptly.

The parts of the assignment are as follows: Part 1 (100 Points) APUSH TEXT BOOK: The American Pageant 16th Edition (Kennedy – Cohen)

• You will create your own HAND WRITTEN chapter NOTES for Chapters 1-4 i. Each chapter MAY NOT EXCEED 2 full sheets of paper (front & back) hand written

1. all dates are required as part of the note taking ii. This portion of your assignment will be 8 sheets of loose leaf stapled AND HANDED IN ON 9/11/17

Part 2 (15 Points)

• The blank map of the United States that has been provided will be filled in with both states and capitals and stapled as part of your packet.

a. There will be a full map quiz in the first full week of school! i. All 50 states and capitals will be quizzed

Part 3 (15 Points) This part is very simple, just research and fill in the chart IN PEN.

• On THE CHART PROVIDED you are to write out each President, VP(s), and Years served (#’s 1-45) a. This should only be done on the sheet provided

Example: 1. George Washington / John Adams / No Party 1789-1797 2. John Adams / Thomas Jefferson / Federalist 1797-1801

a. Some presidents have multiple VP’s!!! Part 4 (15 Points)

• The 2nd blank map has been provided for you and you will detail in different colors the MANIFEST DESTINY of the United States. Each section of land should be distinguished from the other and a legend needs to be made. You are required to have the following on your map:

a. The Original Thirteen Colonies b. 1783 – US as a result of the Revolutionary War c. 1803 – the Louisiana Purchase d. 1818 – Land Ceded by Great Britain e. 1819 – the Adams-Onis Treaty (Florida) f. 1842 – Webster-Ashburton Treaty (Maine Border) g. 1845 – Texas Annexation h. 1846 – Oregon Territory/Country i. 1848 – The Mexican Cession – After the War with Mexico j. 1853 – The Gadsden Purchase

Be sure to create a legend and have all areas defined by different colors.

Part 5: Presidential Journal (50 pts) --- This will be a project that continues throughout the course of the year.

NO WIKIPEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!! Miller Center is a great site! During the course of the year we will be discussing each chief executive who has held the office of President since George Washington. Some will be covered extensively during class while others will be reviewed on your own through text book reading and outside research. The information logged for each president is required to fit on the pages that have been provided for you here. The finished work will be stapled and handed in on the assigned date.

This project serves as an AP Review Packet for the Exam in May!
