FOCUS ON WORSHIP

St. Luke, Evangelist: October 18 is the festival of St. Luke, Evangelist. St. Luke was a gentile physician,

follower of Christ and companion of St. Paul. Identified as the author of both Luke and Acts, Luke was

careful to place the events of Jesus' life in their social and religious contexts. His gospel gives us some of

the most beloved parables, as well as the songs of Zechariah, Mary, the angels, and Simeon. We observe

this lesser festival when it falls on a Sunday.

Reformation Day: Reformation Day is not part of the Liturgical Calendar, but is important as part of our

Lutheran heritage. It is a day for giving thanks for Martin Luther and the other reformers, but much more, it

calls attention to the ongoing need for ecumenical growth and renewal of the church. It falls on October 31st

every year, but is observed on the Sunday on or before October 31. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther

wrote to Albrecht, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, protesting against the sale of indulgences. He

enclosed in his letter a copy of his "Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences,"

which came to be known as The 95 Theses. Luther wrote the 95 Theses and posted them on the church of

All Saints, an event now seen as sparking the Protestant Reformation. The liturgical color of the day is red,

which represents the Holy Spirit and the Martyrs of the Christian Church. Martin Luther's hymn, “A Mighty

Fortress is our God” is often sung on this Sunday.

A MESSAGE FROM

PASTOR FRED

Saints and Sinners

That is how Martin Luther explained the human condition. And you just never know

which one may emerge. Case in point.

I just got onto the Powhite Parkway and was approaching the exit entrance from

Route 288. Cars coming in from 288 are notorious for flying onto the Powhite and

not watching for oncoming traffic. Car #1 is in front of me when car #2 merges into

the entrance lane real fast. Both cars are now side by side, neither one giving way to

the other. Car #2 hits the gas and pulls in front of car #1, barely missing the rear

bumper of car #1.

The race is on. Car #1 pulls into the left lane and quickly pulls in front of car #2

and to add insult to injury, taps the brakes causing car #2 to suddenly brake. And

so it goes for the next two miles until car#1 exits at Courthouse Road.

Its what we call road rage. But here is some interesting information. Car#1 is a

Mercedes and car #2 is a BMW, both very new. Now really, who would want to

take the chance of a collision with such an expensive vehicle? Take a guess. Nope,

it was two older gray haired women, hell bound with righteous indignation as to

who would emerge victorious.

Now it would not surprise me if these two women - by law of averages - may both

have grandchildren they love very much. And it may very well be that they both

started their journey without the slightest malicious intent.

So, you just never know even while in the midst of the most charitable thoughts

when reality forces us off the road of our saintly thoughts and shows us for what

we really are.

In Peace,

Pastor Fred

The St. Luke Messenger

Dear Good People of St Luke Church: Many, many thanks for the support of St. Luke Players first attempt at musical theater on Friday, September 21st: "A Night on Broadway." A cast of twenty-one zany teen and adult choristers accompanied by a three piece band performed comedy sketches along with twenty-four Broadway tunes from seventeen shows of the past eighty years! Please stay tuned for more fun from the St. Luke Players! The Chancel Choir was very happy to sing for the visit of Bishop Humphrey on Sunday, September 23rd. The bilingual anthem "On Holy Ground" pleased him very much. I am very fortunate to serve St. Luke Church and thank you for your support!

Concerts & Recitals: St. Luke’s sanctuary serves as a wonderful recital hall for many musical concerts throughout the year. Check out the schedule of concert & recitals which Tammy Hammond dutifully updates regularly. Peace, Richard Barnett Director of Music St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church P. S. Regular Handbell and Chancel Choir rehearsals have resumed on Thursday evenings. Handbell Choir practice is at 6:30pm. Chancel Choir is at 7:30pm. Do you like to sing or play handbells? We have a great chancel choir and a great handbell choir. Many of these folks have been choir members for years, but we are always looking for newcomers! If you’ve previously sang or played handbells in a church choir, sang in a high school choir or college choir, we invite you to come check us out on Thursday evenings. If you’ve never sung anywhere, you are still invited. Can you play an instrument? Musicians are also invited. Please consider joining us. It's a fun way to be involved in church life and to contribute to our worship service. I hope to see you at one of our choir rehearsals!

Calendar of Special Events UPCOMING BAPTISM

Rose Louise Diamond was born on April 12, 2018.

Rose, the daughter of Guylyn and Matt Diamond,

sister of Keller and Samuel, will be baptized on Sunday,

November 4, 2018 during the 10:00am Worship Service.

Please keep Rose and her family in your prayers. Come help us welcome her to

our St. Luke family on November 4th.

NEW PROGRAM COORDINATOR We have added a new staff position to St. Luke. Please welcome our new Program Coordinator, Becky Wade, to our wonderful church. Becky attended Randolph-Macon College where she received a BA in Religious Studies. After several years of working in child care, Becky took on the role of coordinator for community engagement at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Richmond, VA. She still holds that position.

Now, she has taken on the role of St. Luke Program Coordinator as well because she feels that God is calling her to serve in other capacities. Her heart is in serving God's people, connecting them to one another and helping them become the hands and feet of Christ in the world. Becky has been married for 13 years to her husband, Tony, and has two daughters: Natalie and Emma. She looks forward to getting to know everyone here at St. Luke as we seek to serve the Lord together.

BISHOP HUMPHREY VISITS ST. LUKE On Sunday, September 23, 2018,

we were so happy to welcome

Bishop Bob Humphrey of the

Virginia Synod as he visited us

here at St. Luke.

Bishop Humphrey served during

the service by reading the Gospel

lesson and delivering the sermon.

Pictured are Bishop Humphrey

and Pastor Fred. Jo Ann Marshall

was the Assisting Minister.

Linda Kipps and Jade Groener

were the Worship Assistants. A small reception was held in Bishop Humphrey’s

honor after the Sunday Worship Service.

Worship Service Assistants

Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers.

We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services and communion, Altar Bread Bakers and other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.

In our music department, we have Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members and all sorts of Musicians. We are so thankful to have these folks assist us every week but we can always use more help.

If you are interested in serving the Lord at our church and would like more info about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship and Music Ministry, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact the following people for more information about Worship: Pastor Fred Marcoux, [email protected] Vince Reedinger, Worship/Music chair, [email protected]

For more information about our chancel choir, handbell choir or the music department, please email Richard Barnett, our Director of Music at [email protected].

Do you have something for the next Church Newsletter?

The St. Luke Messenger goes to press on the 23rd of each month. Because of this, all information needs to be in the church office by the 20th of the month. This will help us in getting an accurate newsletter out in a timely manner.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

Would you like to place Flowers

on the Altar on Sunday?

If so, please sign up on the

Flower Chart in the Fellowship Hall.

Questions?

Please see the information below

or call the Office at 804-272-0486.

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used

to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a

special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a

certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed

directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home

after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the

container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience. You may sign up on the chart located in the fellowship hall.

The Flower Chart Calendar

The Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone that signed up for our open Altar Flowers dates. We appreciate it.

We now have at least one arrangement of flowers for every Sunday for the rest of the year.

Please remember, Altar Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

We love when we have two arrangements for Sunday morning so please feel free to check out the chart!

If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. The Altar Flower Chart

is hanging in the fellowship hall near the kitchen.

Way to go St. Luke! We raised $7400 to purchase the food items and supplies needed for this project.

This was the fourth year in a row that our church has completed this hunger project with the help

of our members and friends of St. Luke. Thanks for helping everyone. A great job was done by all.

St. Luke Lutheran Church and

Kroger Community Rewards Fundraising Program Update

Your attention please. Effective August 17, 2018 Kroger has updated it’s Kroger Community

Rewards program.

What is this program?

You can use your regular Kroger Plus Card and raise money for our church. All you have to do is go online to

www.kroger.com/communityrewards and register your individual Kroger Plus Card to St. Luke’s account by clicking

Enroll. You can search for St. Luke by name. Once you enroll your card, all linked Kroger Plus Cards in your household

will also begin to earn funds for St. Luke. Restriction do apply: fuel, alcohol, tobacco, stamps, lottery tickets, money

orders, sales tax and some pharmacy purchases are excluded.

What do I have to do?

To put it simply, beginning this month, please go online and register your regular Kroger shopping card, your

Kroger Plus Card with the Kroger Community Rewards program and designate St. Luke Lutheran Church

as your organization. After that, every time you shop at Kroger and scan your Kroger Plus Card, St. Luke will earn

rewards for your purchases.

Please note:

If you do not yet have a Kroger Plus card, they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger. You will need

to sign up at Kroger.com and create an account (if you haven’t all ready done so) before you can enroll your Kroger

Plus Card in this program. If you need help signing up online with your Kroger Plus Card, someone from St. Luke will

be happy to assist you in doing so.

What’s the updated info?

Kroger has recently upgraded their Community Rewards system, and as a result, our Non-Profit Organization (NPO)

has a new account number. (SX749) Please reference the new number when contacting Kroger for assistance. Kroger

asked us to share this new number our members. While the previous number will continue to be associated with our

organization, it will not be visible to our members when enrolling. New members can enroll by searching for either the

new number or the name of your organization.

Thank you updating your information yearly with Kroger and for participating in our fund raising projects.

Dear St. Luke Family:

Greg Harrier’s entire family wants to express our

deepest appreciation for all the care, support and

help you gave to Greg and all of us during his

illness and death.

In Christian love,

The Harrier Family

July 16, 2018

Dear Rev. Marcoux,

Your generous gift of $2500.00 on July 3, 2018 will help

supply FeedMore’s hunger relief programs with much needed

food for our hungry neighbors. On behalf of the FeedMore team

and thousands of clients, thank you so much for your support.

Please accept our most sincere gratitude as you support our

efforts in the fight against hunger in Central Virginia. We are

proud to be included among your trusted beneficiaries and we

are grateful for the opportunity. Thank you for your faithful

support. Your gift is a blessing!

In gratitude,

Kathryn R. Erhardt

Leadership Gifts and Planned Giving

July 16, 2018

Dear St. Luke Lutheran Church,

Thank you so much for your gift of $5000.00 to Lutheran

Disaster Response. Your generosity brings deep and abiding

hope to communities dealing with a disaster, providing water,

supplies, shelter and support. Your generosity makes possible

both short-term and long-term care, sustaining communities

throughout the recovery process and into new life.

Thank you for joining with the whole church, Lutheran Disaster

Response and our local partners. Your gifts are bearing the love

of Christ to many in need. Please let us know if there is anything

we can do to help support your ministry.

With gratefulness,

The Rev. Daniel Rift

Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal

Dear St. Luke,

I would like to thanks the congregation for remembering me at the time of the loss of my husband. Many came to the service and many more sent cards. It meant the a lot to me.

God bless you all, Pastor Donna

The “We Care Committee”

Did you know that the “We Care Committee” is

a committee of St. Luke’s that is called upon to

organize receptions in the fellowship hall

following Memorial and Funeral Services.

These receptions allow family members to greet

and visit with friends, business associates and

members of the congregation while having some

finger foods to enjoy.

The “We Care Committee” would like to take this opportunity to say

“Thank you” to all the members of St. Luke who are so willing to

help provide food for said receptions. Providers might not always be

acknowledged verbally, but, let it be known, the grieving family is

given the names of the congregation members who so graciously

provided whatever type of food they were asked to bring.

Following the reception, if there happens to be some left-over food

and refreshments, the food is packed up and sent home with family

members. In that manner, the family is cared for in the confines of

the church as well as their own home.

Thank you all,

Peggy Walters and Mariett Eggleston

The We Care Committee

Dear Pastor Marcoux and members of St. Luke,

Thank you for being with my brother Greg Harrier

during his illness. Thank you for helping him cope

with the knowledge of his upcoming death and

for comforting his family.

Thank you for your kindness, for the wonderful

celebration of Greg’s life and for being a loving

church community.

With gratitude and love,

Jayne (sister) and Ronnie Sharpe and family

To my St. Luke family,

I wish to thank you for all the prayers and loving care I received during these last 3 1/2 months. I appreciated the mountain of cards and notes and looked forward to their arrival. I love the beautiful prayer shawl from the choir. I treasure it. Thanks for all the beautiful flowers and the balloons. It was so wonderful to come back to church. In case you have not heard I am off dialysis. God is good.
