Chapter of ITC, VTCI Publication of the LONG ISLAND THUNDERBIRD CLUB MAY 2009

    THE CAR AND IT’S OWNER

2004 Retro Thunderbird, Silver with Black Hardtop

    WHAT MAKES IT INTERESTING

Between 2002 and 2005 Ford tried to bring back the look and feel

of the 55 -57 T-birds. This put a spark in a lot of car company’s.

The reason I say that is because Ford then copied the Mustang of

the late 60’s. Dodge came out with the Challenger of the 70’s and

Chevy would like hell to offer a retro of the Camaro of the late

    60’s.

HOW LONG I HAVE OWNED IT

The car was purchased used last April. It’s a great car, with little

    trunk space.

    WHERE HE FOUND IT

Honestly I would rather not say where I purchased this car,

    WHAT’S IN YOUR DRIVEWAY

because I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go there to buy a car.

Anyone who has a 1/2 Keg of beer and wants to drive me home

when we’re done drinking it, let me know and I’ll fill you in on

the entire story. But I will say there is nothing wrong with this car

right now, except the trunk isn’t big enough for my needs.

    CONDITION

I’ve owned the car for a year. It has not seen the rain or even a

heavy mist since I’ve owned it. The car drives like a top and

brings a smile to my face.

    VALUE

    I hope $19,500 to someone.

    PERSONAL COMMENTS

It truly is a great car. I really enjoyed it this year, but I need

someting with more room. Joe Apicella

    th

    Century Walk

    An Invitation to Participate

    Wednesday May 20, 2009

    Hauppauge Middle School

    Hi World,

    On Tuesday March 3

    rd

I met with Joy Ferrara the Assistant Principal

of Hauppauge Middle School. She has invited our club, TONY, the

Model “A” guys and our cars to participate in their “A 20

    th

    Century

    Walk” on Wednesday May 20, 2009 It’s their 8

    th

    grade Interdisciplinary

Day for the school. The hours are 9 AM to 2 PM, and we will get a

Continental breakfast, and a nice lunch for participating. She will also set

up a canopy to protect us old guys from Mother Nature. Though out the

day, students will rotate through a variety of hands-on- or interactive

workshops spotlighting different decades in history. A classic car work-

shop would allow groups of students (12 – 15 per workshop rotation) 30

minutes to interact with car owners and hear a little about the history of

their period car. Students will be given an opportunity to ask questions.

Any time period memorabilia for table display will be appreciated.

So if you would like to join Big Bird and myself for the event these

    are the guidelines.

You must call me to reserve your spot. NO WALK INS Each club will be

allocated six to seven spots. The school only wants a maximum of twen-

    ty vehicles.

You must be on the grounds prior to 9 AM. Don’t get there to early,

because you need to leave room for the buses to leave.

Prepare yourself in regard to talking about your car, and answer questions

    from the students.

If one of the three clubs does not get six or seven cars to participate,

and then the other two clubs will get a chance to fill the void. Some of

the finer details have not been worked out. Lastly Joy is looking for a

Veteran of foreign war who would like to give a classroom talk that

    day

Directions: HMS is located at 600 Townline Road in Hauppauge,

across from the High School. You can take Vet’s Highway from the LIE,

and make a right on Lincoln Blvd. Or Route 111 south to the end, make

a left, and first right which is Lincoln Blvd. School is on the left. If you

get lost you can call my cell phone 516 445 2630. Just a footnote to May

    20

    th

: Presently we have four spots secured, and that leaves three spots

    still available.

Front Cover April Issue of Bird Talk: Hey what’s the Presidents

Mustang Bullitt doing on the front cover of the April newsletter. Funny

you should ask. The answer is: Nobody stepped up to the plate with pic-

tures and text. Well I’m out of cars unless I put my Jeep on the cover of

the next issue. Come on give me a break. How hard is it to take some pic-

tures of your pride and joy? Follow the format and answer all the ques-

tions, and then e-mail everything to Rudy.

Club Badges: The samples are in, and they are gorgeous. A check has

been cut, and send to the badge people, and hopefully within the next

couple of weeks, we will have them. You can see them on Tuesday April

    14

    th

@ BK meeting. We only ordered forty units, (and they gave us two

free bees) and we have deposits on twenty seven. You do the math, and

once there gone, there gone. No final numbers yet, we are waiting to see

what the shipping charges will be.

Westbury Gardens/Sunday June 7, 2009: Check Page 9 for your

show application. This year I will not be attending the show, because I

will be in Carlisle Pa for Ford Nationals with my son Marc.

New Member: Welcome aboard Pat Walsh and his wife Fran. Pat and

Fran live in Northport and have a 64 green Bird. I met Pat awhile ago,

and he is the brother in law of Sal Canale.

Speaking of Mr.Canale: In last months issue of Bird Talk Sal, and in

conjunction with Mr. Bauer surprised me with a few lines about yours

truly. I want to thank Sal, and those who share his thoughts about my

Presidency. You do things in life and don’t look for payment, but this

caught me off guard, and I thank you all. I love doing what I do, and my

reward is when we plan something, and you guys support the effort by

    being there.

Belonging to a Car Club is What it’s All About: On Saturday March

14, 2009, Paul Rosini a long time LITC member made a house call to my

home because Big Bird was not feeling to well. If you remember back in

June of 2008 I received my second new carburetor from Pony carburetor

in New Mexico. Rather beat up Pony again as I did in 2008 we now have

to move forward. I would not let these guys put air in my tires. The prob-

lem was getting the Big Guy started. I had to pump a million times for

the car to turn over. Once it started it was fine. So I called Doctor Paul

during the week, and asked him if he would come over. He did every-

thing but give the car mouth to mouth. He is a very talented individual

and could properly leap tall buildings in a single bound if he wanted to.

Bottom line is I don’t have to kiss the hood anymore to get the car start-

ed. The man knows his stuff.

Sunday Mornings @ Cap Tree Boat Basin: On Sunday morning

    March 15

    th

I decided to get my old body out of bed early,(early means

you have to get to CT between 7:30 – 8 AM or parking could be a prob-

lem) and meet the guys at Cap Tree. For those who are not in tune with

CT it is a cruise morning, and the parking lot holds about (600) cars on a

good day. On this day I met Joe Apicella AKA Mr. Joe, Paul Rosini, Joe’s

Cousin Bob, his son, Quiet Pat from our Thunderbird Show and a few of

the regulars. If you get the urge it’s easy to get there. Robert Moses

Causeway south and follow the signs before the Robert Moses bridge.

There is no cost to park, because it’s before Memorial Day, and there is

a restaurant, and bathrooms. Many many nice cars on this day must have

seen at least a dozen new Challengers.

    Tuesday March 17

    th

    Meeting @ Bertucci’s: Another excellent

turnout of Bird People. Mr. Bauer won the 50/50, and put a halt to Mr.

President’s Message (Continued from Page 3)

Weinberg’s winning spree. I did my detailing session, but this year the theme was “what to you bring to a car show”. That created

dialogue, and was asked by those in attendance to make a list of the products I displayed, and where to buy them.

    The List

Product Where to Buy Average Cost

    Groit’s Garage Carry All www.groitsgarage.com $30.00

Gliptone Body Gloss Pep Boys/Aid Stores $8.00

    Speed Shine www.groitsgarage.com $6.00

    Groit’s Fine Hand Polish www.groitsgarage.com $10.00

    Groit’s Best Show Wax www.groitsgarage.com $10.00

    Groit’s Engine Bay Dressing www.groitsgarage.com $10.00

Turtle Wax Foam Away Pep Boys/Aid Stores $6.00

Turtle Wax Liquid Clay Bar Pep Boys/Aid Stores $6.00

    American Cosmetics Polish www.ac.com $20.00

Micro Fiber Towels Pep Boys/Aid Stores $10.00

    Assorted Sponges Any Where $5.00

    Hand Cleaner Any Where $6.00

The Glosser Pep Boys/Aid Stores $10.00

Rubber Gloves Any Where ` $5.00

Stoner Tarminator Pep Boys/Aid Stores $8.00

Armor All Tire Foam Pep Boys/Aid Stores $8.00

Bleech White WW Cleaner Pep Boys/Aid Stores $8.00

Lexol Leather Cleaner Pep Boys/Aid Stores $10.00

Every item in my carry all serves a purpose. At most shows there is no water or if there was there would be no hose to use. You

have to adapt to your environment. Example; if your car becomes really dirty on the way to an event. Use Turtle Wax Foam Away.

It’s waterless, and all you need is a micro fiber towel. On show note I always detail my car before the show date, and when I get to

the event I just fine-tune what I did prior.

Auto Mat Tech Session/Saturday April 11, 2009: Game time was 9:30, and by the time all the players showed up we where

ready to go. We did this a couple of years ago, and Tim one of the owners of Auto Mat invited us back again. It’s a basic walk

through of their facility. They do everything form custom mats, to reproducing original seat covers, convertible tops, carpets, and

now they are into body restorations, mechanicals for your car. For me they did custom mats for the Mustang, and a jacket, and both

were top shelve. A wet and disgusting morning, despite the weather I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

Syosset Ford Thunderbird Show: Dennis Benfante and I have come up with a great idea for the show, which I will now share

with you. The back ground on the plaque will be the American Flag, and the clip art that Daytona Trophy has is not want we want.

So I called the trophy people, and they said I could use pictures of our Thunderbirds in lieu of their clip art. So from our club we

have chosen Ken Weinberg’s 65 convertible. Dennis will pick some one from his club. We will continue to use this format in the

future, and pick one car each from each club. Also we have come up with a theme for the show. On the back shoulder of the show

T-Shirt it will read “I LOVE A HARD BRAKE PEDAL.”

    Peace
