Task Two - Mapping the 2014 Finalists

On the blank map worksheet, shade in and carefully label the participating countries using your own colour scheme.

• North America - Red

• South America - Green

• Europe - Blue

• Africa - Yellow

• Asia* - Orange

• Oceania - None Qualified

Extension Task - You will see that Australia play in the Asia group of footballing countries and not in Oceania, where they are actually located! Read the quote to the right hand side.

Why do you think the Australian Football Associated asked to be transferred to Asia back in 2006?

Australia in Asia - surely not ??Australia currently hold the world record for the largest win and the most goals scored by a player in an international match. Both records were achieved during the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification match against American Samoa on 11 April 2001. Australia won 31–0 with Archie Thompson scoring 13 goals and David Zdrilic scoring 8 goals. Two days before the 31–0 win, Australia broke the record for largest win with a 22–0 win over Tonga

Task Three - A Rich Man's Game? We are going to be using Gapminder World, an excellent tool for Geography used for looking at key data of countries. We are going to look at two bits of data for each of the previous winners of the Football World Cup.

1. Life Expectancy - This is the average age to which people live to in a country. A high life expectancy would indicate that people are generally healthy and well looked after. A low life expectancy would mean health is generally poor and hospitals may not be available to everyone.

2. Income Per Person - This means the average annual (every year) income of a typical person who lives in that country in US $. A high annual income would indicate better jobs and employment possibilities and the opposite for a low income. In France, the average income per year is $43,000 at present.

How?1. Download the worksheet on the geog.biz site called ‘lesson 2 gapminder task’2. Follow the instructions on the worksheet and complete the relevant sections.
