reoccurrence, so our staff will be in contact with those
families of ill residents, so they know the status and
whether it is clear for them to visit or not.
We just ask that all visitors of Weeroona please take
the standard precautions required when visiting
people with vulnerable immune systems.
Wash your hands
When you enter the facility, use the hand
sanitizer at each entry or at Nurses stations.
Do not come in if you have symptoms of a cold
or a sore throat, temperature, nausea or
episodes of vomiting or diarrhea.
If you have been sick, wait 48 hours before
visiting your relative or friend.
Before you leave, use the hand sanitizer.
Using these simple steps in the chain of infection
control will assist to keep our residents virus free and
yourself, your family and the community healthier.
Thanks again.
Kate Chew - Facility Manager
As many of you will be aware, Weeroona, as with other
facilities and hospitals in NSW, have suffered with either
the Influenza A or Gastroenteritis viruses taking hold of
residents and staff.
For Weeroona, this places a terrible strain on both the
residents who are sick and those who are not, as often,
under consultation with the Public Health Unit, we are
forced to take the strong action of a Lockdown.
Making this decision weighs heavily on Management. We
want our residents to maintain their connections with
the community, but often, as in our case, the virus is
brought in by family or friends that are in the incubation
period or just at the tail end of their illness, not realizing
they are still sick and contagious.
So the DON and myself would like to thank the residents
for their patience and understanding during our recent
Lockdown. A big thank you to those relatives and friends,
who understood our precautions and abided by the
lockdown, without too much fuss! It does put people out
I know, but there is not much we can do about that.
While we are now out of lockdown, the virus is not yet
gone entirely. There are still a few cases and some have
We hope you will be happy and comfortable at Weeroona. We look forward to getting to know you better.
Both the Director of
Nursing - Rob Chew, and
Facility Manager act as
the resident liaison to
assist residents and their
families in the admission
process.

Hi Everyone,
Wow! July is done.
Sadly, our bus outings had to be cancelled due to mechanical troubles. The bus company has informed us that it will be out of action in August as well. To make up for this, we will have special morning teas and lunches in-house for August.
I have sent out the invitations for our Father’s Day afternoon tea. Please RSVP in office hours(8.30am-4pm) Monday – Friday, for catering purposes.
We really appreciate all of our volunteers. They play a vital role in us keeping connected with the wider community. We have our annual street stall on Friday, 23 August from 10am, outside Optimal Pharmacy. Come down and say hi and purchase some lamingtons, sweet treats, and browse our other offerings.
See you in the corridors ☺☺☺☺☺ Jan – Weeroona Lifestyle Coordinator

BASTILLE DAY HAPPY HOUR
July 12th we celebrated the national French day, filling
our lounge rooms with French music. We then
went on a tour of France (via YouTube).
Listening to the French anthem stirred memories for some of our residents from their school days.
Margaret and Norma recalled having to sing the anthem daily. Helen told us about her holiday in France.
We dined on croissants, brie and camembert cheese and some mouthwatering profiteroles that our lovely
nurse Donna cooked for us. They were definitely the biggest hit of the day.
Great day had by all.

Bunnings Gardening Afternoon
July 10th our Grevillea lounge was jam-packed with eager green thumbs. Amanda set to work in showing us how to pot and fertilize our plants. There was lots of laughter and lots of concentration in the room. We love that Amanda comes up with such creative ideas. We all took our plants back to our room, and it’s now our responsibility to care for and water them. Amanda’s next visit will be focused on our male residents. We are lucky to have such a caring and friendly lady working with us.
Margaret Pendergast is enjoying her outings with NDIS. During the month of July, she has been taken for walks along the Lachlan river, past the horses and golf club, to the airport to look at the small planes, up to Bellevue Hill and a visit to the Library where she has enjoyed the books.

NAIDOC WEEK 2019
This year’s theme was VOICE TREATY TRUTH. The Aboriginal culture is the oldest in the world. This year’s theme spoke about not just the history of our first people, but the history of all of us, of all of Australia and we need to own it. Cowra High School’s Wagambirra dance group, lead by Jarod Burns Song Man, came to perform for us. Their belief in their culture came alive through their dances. Many thanks to Cowra High for including us in their celebrations. Frank Burns’ grandson and granddaughter were part of the dance group.
For the Wednesday afternoon craft
session, 7 of us joined in to make
dream catchers with Shona, using
paper plates, textas, feathers,
stickers and string. They turned out
really great and I was proud to hang
mine in my room.
Shona also ran another fun craft
session where we participated in
making a butterfly, a bee and a lady
bug. Bart, Marie and Leo were
proud of their efforts.
On 27 July at 6pm I was picked up
and had tea at the Services Club
with others from Special Needs. At
8pm the doors opened for the
special band and singer called
“Dragon”. They sat me in the front
row so I had a wonderful spot to
see and listen to the singer. There
were people up dancing. We all had
a wonderful time. I got a thumbs up
and a touch on the shoulder from
the singer. There were over 200
people there to listen. It was
crowded which is great.
There were 5 or 6 in wheelchairs
and all had a good night. I do thank
the Special Needs group for taking
me to see “Dragon”. I had the best
night. I bought a T-shirt which they
signed and I had my photo taken
with the singer.

POTTERY PAINTING
On Monday we managed to put the final touches on our pottery creations.
The theme seemed to be dots. Various colours were used and the finished look was spectacular.
Many thanks to Karen who takes our pottery home to be fired in her kiln.
We are looking forward to what we can produce this month.
Please read our resident profile for this month. Now, Sheryl is the real McCoy when it comes to pottery.
