ONE OF THE MOST exhilarating feelings a jazz fan could possibly have is watching and listening to a great jam session. On October 14 of 1954, in the usual haphazard way that jam sessions occur, one took place in Hollywood, California.

An important phase of this session was the complete informality with which the session was brought to- gether, planned, and executed. At the completion of a previous record date consisting of Clifford Brown and Max Roach, many jazz musicians were in the audience such as Herb Geller, Maynard Ferguson, Dinah Washington and Clark Terry. Everybody said, let’s have a ball—let’s have a jam session. EmArcy Records promptly hired a small auditorium; free admission was given to jazz fans only. The first part of this concert can be heard on MG36000 DINAH JAMS featuring Dinah Washington. On this LP, Dinah can be heard only on Darn That Dream.

One particular thought we would like to bring to the mind of the listener, and that is the necessary exuber- ance and enthusiasm necessary for a jazz record. Without this, improvisation always seems to be stifled.

An unusual item in this LP presents three great trumpet players, Maynard Ferguson, Clifford Brown, and Clark Terry, jamming continually. You can’t help but notice the effect each one has upon the other, during the various solos. If you like excitement unleashed, we recommend Move; if your forte ‘is soul, listen to

the medley featuring Richie Powell, Clark Terry, Herb Geller and Clifford Brown. If your preference is toward relaxed swinging sounds, then listen to What Is This Thing Called Love.

At present, Clifford Brown and Max Roach are work- ing together with their own unit and doing very well wherever they appear. They can be heard on EmArcy MG26043 which is a very representative collection of the style they are known for. Clifford Brown has been picked as new trumpet star of the year and greater things are expected from him.

Maynard Ferguson is presently signed to Paramount Pictures and also appears with his small band. A great deal can be heard from this Canadian on EmArc MG26017, MAYNARD FERGUSON’S HOLLYWOOD PARTY and MG26024 DIMENSIONS, featuring the small Ferguson band.

Clark Terry is touring with the Duke Ellington organ- ization. Herb Geller, soon to be heard on his own LP, MG26045 HERB GELLER PLAYS, is the unknown who gives us a very fine performance on this LP.

Dinah Washington has been known primarily as a blues singer. However, reaction from various people who have heard her new albums has been one of amazement, as most listeners are unaware of her

various talents. All in all, we feel that this LP is a very worthwhile

contribution to the field of jazz.
