Changing An Entity’s Labels on Map

Purpose: Many times when you are making a map you wish to create labels on your map to refer to a particular set of entities (point, line or polygon), for example states in the USA. This is the way to determine the default names or id’s provided by your shape file and change from the default to another attribute if you so desire. Say you are changing from state name to population count.

Procedure1. Make sure that the theme (file) of data that you wish to work on is active in your TOC, then Right Click on the theme’s name.2. From the opened menu click on PROPERTIES.3. From the window that opens select the LABELS tab. In the middle of this window you will see a pick window with the title TEXT STRING LABEL FIELD. Click on this pick window and scroll to whichever attribute you wish to use for the map labels (for example you could change from State Name to Population or State FIPS code numbers).4. Make sure that the Label features in this layer check box is checked to make labels visible.5. Click OK6.
