INFERRINGA GUIDE FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS

Page 2: What is Inferring?

DEFINITION

FIGURING OUT SOMETHING THAT WASN’T COMPLETELY IN THE TEXT/STORY.

IT IS NOT STATING THE OBVIOUS.

Example:

Stating the obvious: That girl is wearing a fancy dress and carrying a bouquet of flowers.

Inference: That girl is a flower girl in a wedding. It is not prediction, though the two are definitely related. Remind your students that inference asks "What conclusions can you draw about what is happening now?" Prediction asks, "What will happen next?"

Page 3: What is Inferring?

Is it predicting?

It is NOT prediction, though the two are definitely related.

Remind your students that inference asks "What conclusions can you draw about what is happening NOW?"

Prediction asks, "What will happen NEXT?"

Page 4: What is Inferring?

How do you infer?

Using clues to make a good guess

When you :

Think about what you see ( clues or evidence)

+ What you already know (schema)

INFERRING

Page 5: What is Inferring?

Let Us Think…

If someone is smiling we can infer she is happy

If someone is crying we can infer she is sad

If someone is yawning we can infer he is sleepy.

Let’s Try…The scout

leader looked at the sky and

muttered something under his

breath. Then he looked at

his map. “Let’s get

moving,” he called to the group of tired

boys. “The faster the better.”

What do you think the scout

leader was feeling?

Why do you think

so?

Page 8: What is Inferring?

Let’s Try…Sasha handed

the book to the librarian. The librarian opened the book and

found crayon scribbles on almost every

page. “I’m really sorry,” said Sasha. “I should have

kept the book in my room.”

What happened to Sasha’s

library book?

Why do you think

so?

Let’s Try…The bus was

full of children. Everyone was laughing and talking. Jason scratched a

mosquito bite on his leg. It

had been a fun week, but he was glad that

tonight he would be

sleeping in his own bed

instead of in a sleeping bag.

Where was the bus coming from?

How do you

know?

Page 10: What is Inferring?

Let’s Try…Musa hid behind

the bushes. Soon, a group of

older boys walked by talking and

laughing. Musa’s heart was

beating fast. He tried not to make any noise. Musa waited until he could not hear

the boys anymore. Then he picked up his

books and walked home.

Why was Musa

hiding?

What makes

you think so?
