SOME EXAMPLESBusiness FairnessWesabe.com Vs. Mint.com

Wesabe, A personal finance Web site based in San Francisco. Wesabe opened in 2006 and closed in July. AT ITS PEAK- Wesabe was one of the first movers in the Web 2.0 financial space. Its founders, Mr. Hedlund and Jason Knight, envisioned a site that would help consumers budget their money and make better spending decisions. The company received two rounds of venture capital financing totaling $4.7 million and signed up 150,000 members in its first year. WHAT WENT WRONG- Ten months after Wesabe’s introduction, a competitor, Mint.com, appeared. As Mr. Hedlund acknowledges, Mint had a better name and better design and was easier to use. Within nine months, Mint had 300,000 users and $17 million in venture financing. In 2009, Mint was sold to Intuit for $170 million. LOOKING BACK- Mr. Hedlund wishes he had simplified the consumer’s experience. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/06/business/smallbusiness/06sbiz.html?_r=0

Educational FairnessNew Columbia Senior HighSchool is a public school within the New Columbia Public School District. Chris has never been tested for any learning disabilities, and the standardizedtest scores indicate Chris is an average student. Chris is scheduled to graduate on timeand receive a high school diploma at the end of the school year.Chris' basic skills in reading, writing and arithmetic are extremely weak. Thebasic skills Chris possesses are so poor that Chris finds it difficult to function adequatelyin society. Chris has difficulty reading simple books, the newspaper, a menu in arestaurant, writing a simple letter or making sure correct change is given by a store clerk. Chris has applied for several jobs during the past year and a half and has beenunsuccessful in finding and holding a job. Chris has had difficulty in filling out jobapplications due to poor reading and writing skills. Prospective employers feel Chriscannot handle minimal responsibilities in a job. Chris has also been looking for a fulltimejob to begin after graduation and has not been able to find one. Chris believes theinability to find employment is directly related to a lack of basic academic skills.YES____ NO____ CRITERION: __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Gender FairnessToday, on average, a woman makes only 77 cents for every dollar that a man makes. Over the course of a woman's career, she will lose an average of $400,000 as a result of unequal pay practices. As families struggle to save for college and a secure retirement, that missing $400,000 has a devastating impact on family budgets.
