EASTERThe Spanish word

for“Easter” is

Pascua.The period of

forty days before Easter is called Lent.

Lent is called La Cuaresma in Spanish.

PROCESSIONS

During La Semana Santa Spanish towns have street parades every day.

In the processions, people carry and follow floats, known as pasos.

FLOATS

On the floats, there are statues of Jesus and La Virgen María. The floats are beatifully decorated with flowers, gold and silver ornaments and candles.

The heavy floats are carried by men called costaleros.

EASTER IN SPAIN IS A MEMORIAL OF THE SUFFERING, DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRISTIt is also a period

of cooperation and union for Christians.

People who belong to “hermandades” (brotherhood) prepare together Easter celebrations.

During this week, there is an atmosphere of mourning with the serious processions except on Easter Sunday. It is a day full of light and colour, with happines and celebration.

The most famous Easter celebrations are in Andalucía, Valladolid, Toledo, Segovia, Burgos, Zamora and Cuenca.

Mantillas: black silk clothing that women wear covering their heads in the

procession.

Nazarenos:People that participate in the

processions of Easter week dressed with tunics.

The nazarenos ar men, women and children who wear long robes

La bulla: lots of people set in a place of the

city to see the procession arriving.

El paso: wooden platform to carry the statues in the procession of Easter

week

Hermandades:(brotherhoods)Groups of people that organize the

celebration of Easter in Spain

Capataz: he is the leader of “los costaleros” during the Procession. He

checks that los costaleros are wellprepared underneath.

Saeta : cante flamenco that a singer sings

usually from a balcony to be heard by all the procession.

PALM SUNDAY “DOMINGO DE RAMOS”In the morning most Spanish people go to the church to celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalen. In every town people carry palm and olives branches and follow the statue of Jesus.

This day marks the beginning of Holy Week.

MAUNDY THURSDAY “ JUEVES SANTO “There is a procession in the street. It recalls when Jesus celebrated his last supper with his disciples and he was betrayed by Judas.

GOOD FRIDAY “VIERNES SANTO”This day is National Holiday and in the evening there is a procession that recalls the death of Jesus of Nazareth.

Holy Saturday “Sábado Santo“

It is a day of mourning and rest.

EASTER SUNDAY “ DOMINGO DE RESURRECIÓN “

Easter Sunday is a day of joy for all Christians because it is celebrated the resurrection of Jesus.There is a procession in the morning. We can see the statues of Jesus and his mother.Children enjoy this celebration because in some towns they are given sweets in the streets.

EASTERThere is not much decoration these days.

We can find candles and religious pictures in some houses.

Sometimes people buy easter eggs at the supermarket, or easter bunnies made of chocolate, because kids love chocolate, but it isn´t typical in Spain.

At school we eat chocolate easter eggs when we learn about Easter traditions from other countries in our English class.

Easter is coming up soon and we have holidays from Maundy Thursday (the 28th of March) until the 7th of April .
