Research shows: When a woman drinks while pregnant, the alcohol reaches the baby. The unbornbaby’s liver can’t process alcohol like an adult’s so alcohol stays in the fetus longer.

Alcohol is a teratogen; a substance that causes birth defects. It interferes with thenormal development of the baby’s growing cells. This can cause a lifelong disabilitywith mental, physical, learning, and behaviour problems. These difficulties are oftennot visible until the child is older.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant:• It is safest for your baby if you say, “No thanks” to alcohol.• Any amount might harm your growing baby.• All types of alcohol can cause harm (wine, beer, coolers, and hard liquor).• Alcohol can hurt your baby at any time during pregnancy.• It is never too late to stop drinking. Every day without alcohol gives your baby a

better chance to be healthy.• Talk to your healthcare provider about alcohol and pregnancy.• Ask your partner and friends to support your choice to not drink.

You are not alone if you drank alcohol during your pregnancy. Motherisk is an information and counselling resource.1-877-327-4636 or www.motherisk.org/
