What do I do with my hands during a presentation?

One of the toughest jobs during a presentation


Most common position - hands raised to the midrib


Often referred to as the T-Rex position


As long as you don’t leave it there all the time


is a base position for your hands


A position to keep your hands when you are not gesturing.


Always bring hands back to the base position.


Hands to the side - most common base position


There are no rules. Only best practices.


Do what feels natural


And appropriate.


Every word or sentence need not be accompanied

by a hand gesture.


Learn to move each hand independent of each other


Hands do not have to move together all the time. Not tied with a bungee cord.


Limit gestures between shoulders and hip. Again this is a best practice. Not a rule.


Dont’s


There are no rules. Only best practices.


Don’t go crazy with your hand gestures.


It will be distracting. Will take the focus away from your message.


Never fold hands - defensive, closed positions.


Hands in pockets is not a good position - usually.


Avoid hands on hips. Defiant.


Hands covering the crotch area. Commonly referred to as the fig leaf position.


Hands behind back. What are you hiding?
