Not while that Whale is about! - How to be a Marine Mammal Observer10:30 – 11:20 Gardline Environmental Ltd

Offshore developments are necessary to allow us to heat our homes, use lights, manufacture mobilephones, computers and all sort of other things that we rely on in every day life. But how do we make sure that whales and dolphins are not harmed during these offshore activities. Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) are onboard all construction and exploration vessels every day making sure that operations follow strict guidelines to ensure whales and dolphins are kept clear of activities that could damage or kill them. But what does a MMO do and how can you become one?

In an Introduction to being a Marine Mammal Observer, Gardline Environmental Ltd demonstrate what MMOs do, how they aid in the conservation of whales and dolphins and what it’s like to work offshore? Capture Whales and Dolphins on Camera! - How to take the very best pictures above and below the surface13:30 – 14:50 Chris Gomersall and Kirk MottersheadWant to know how to take that perfect whale or dolphin shot? WhaleFest brings two professional wildlife photographers together to give you expert tips and techniques for getting the perfect photo. From novice to expert, this wildlife photography workshop will teach you how to capture that perfect encounter both above and below the water.

Through their work, Kirk Mottershead and Chris Gomersall will demonstrate the tricks of photography from how to maximise results using basic compact cameras and autofocus, through to the use of SLRs, polarising filters, monopods, shutter speeds, backlighting etc. They will also demonstrate how to touch up and promote your photos from home using programs such as photoshop and Flickr.

is known as photo-identification. This is one of the most commonly used research techniques for many marine mammal studies throughout the world. In this Introduction to Photo-Identification Workshop, the charity MARINElife will teach you this valuable skill, from its uses and application through to practical demonstrations as you attempt to identify the individual animals in the group and piece together their story so we can better protect them.

Our compere for this exciting programme of interactive talks and presentations taking place in the Talk Talk chamber is BBC Sony award-winning journalist and former Radio Four presenter, Neil Walker, who has worked in such far-flung locations as South Africa, Pakistan and Rwanda. A past vice-chair of Organisation Cetacea, he is currently completing a novel about conservationists who turn to eco-terrorism to save the oceans.

MARINElife has been surveying whales and dolphins in the English Channel since 1995, and the Charm III project, mostly using volunteers, demonstrates the power of citizen science. About Mark is series producer of the acclaimed BBC Ocean Giants series on whales and dolphins, narrated by Stephen Fry. He’s a keen diver passionate conservationist. ‘Whales in culture – culture in whales’, is a fascinating overview of cetacean intelligence and culture, and a look at how human cultures have interacted with these animals in different parts of the world. The talk also includes a mini ‘what can you do’ section - a timely reminder that we can all help protect whales and dolphins based on the choices we make.

About Claire Bass is the Oceans Campaign Leader at WSPA, heading an international team addressing various marine animal welfare problems including cetacean hunting. She has attended meetings of the International Whaling Commission since 2004, where she has co-authored several scientific papers. Since 2008 Claire has been a member of the UK delegation to the IWC, providing advice to the UK and other pro-conservation governments on issues relating to whale conservation and welfare.

About Spotting a pod of dolphins in her early teens during a ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Spain made Sally decide on a career conserving wildlife. She majored in marine biology, studied the stresses on captive Bottlenose Dolphin, and took a scientific post on IFAW’s research vessel “Song of the Whale” studying acoustic patterns of Fin and Sperm Whales. WithIFAW she worked in ice floes protecting Harps and Hooded seals from hunting, to managing the operation during the worlds worst oiled wildlife spill in Cape Town which affected 20,000 African Penguins. From working with the Metropolitan Police Wildlife Crime Unit, to now becomingdirector of ORCA (Organisation Cetacea) . . . and it all began with a pod of Common Dolphins, that has helped protect thousands of wild animals!

David Rothenberg will tell you exactly how to make music with live with whales, describing his experiences making the CD WHALE MUSICand the accompanying book THOUSAND MILE SONG (Perseus UK 2008). Rothenberg travelled to Russia to play with belugas, Canada and Norway to jam with orcas, and of course Hawaii to make the most serious music along with humpback whales, the greatest singers of the animal world, whose songs can go on for up to twenty-three hours at a time.

How does the sound we make in the oceans affect the creatures that live there? In this informative talk, Stephen will endeavour to explain why man-made sounds or acoustic pollution is such a danger to whales and dolphins. Using practical demonstrations to illustrate the problem and with recordings of cetaceans and human-created sounds, this talk will also explore the history of acoustic-related cetacean strandings, what is being done about it and what the future may hold.

About Stephen sits on conservation panels, including the Military Underwater Sound Stakeholders Forum, and is Operations Manager for BDMLR, the only charity specialising in marine mammal rescue and covering England, Scotland and Wales. Around 8000 volunteers have been trained over the years, with close to 2000 in readiness for rescues – they respond to around 500 incidents a year around Britain's coast.

Andrew is honored to share his story about a one-in-a-million chance encounter with a male baby Sperm Whale, ‘Scar’. His interactions with him over the past eleven years have earned him the nickname ‘The Whale Whisperer’. Andrew’s sister Carla will share the thrill of drawing people to this little known island for decades, impacting lives and making a difference to whales and humans.

About Andrew pioneered whale watching in the Eastern Caribbean, and established Dominica as one of the best places to see Sperm Whales - both in and out of the water. He is head of Anchorage Whale Watch & Dive Center, founding president of ‘Caribwhale’, and specialises in sensitively escorting the world’s top under water photographers on in-water sessions with the Sperm Whales – including the team from BBC’s Ocean Giants series (Mark Brownlow with Didier Noirot and Doug Allen!)
