I’m sure by now you’ve all noticed a few updates going on throughout the build-ing. Thanks to Governor Charlie Baker, the House of Representatives, and the Senate, we received a $75,000 earmark grant to make improvements and updates to our senior center. This grant, coupled with support from our Mayor Robert Hedlund and our Town Council, ensures we continue to make the improvements needed at our senior center. Our building is very old, but our space is generous compared to many senior centers across the state. In addi-tion to an updated reception area we are in the process of updating our Library/Conference (Room 10), the Knitting/Movie/Conference (Room 11) and our Art/Conference (Room 12). !!Specific improvements include:!!Library/Conference (Room 10): New chairs and tables, a new kitchenette, an additional bookshelf (built by our Wey-mouth High School Carpentry students), a new conference table (donated from the Furniture Trust), updated electrical outlets and plumbing to the sink. !!Knitting/Movie/Conference (Room 11): removal of the credenza’s and update of cabinets lining the back of the room and the side of the room.!!Art/Conference (Room 12): New cabi-nets, counter, and sink and new art dis-play accessories for the walls.!!We have also ordered a new awning for the west entrance and new storage shelving in our storage room off of the gym. These and many more updates are in the works. !!Special thanks to the High School CTE program for all their hard work in reno-vating our storage closet off of the gym and for building us a new bookshelf for the Library. Thank you Brian Duane for your fabulous updates to the recep-tion area. !

Plant. Grow. Share. !FREE WORKSHOP !

Composting For Better GardensTuesday, June 5th, 2018 at 1pm REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

Join organic Farmer Jon Belber, of Holly Hill Farm in Cohasset, as he teaches participants all about the benefits of composting for your home garden. This insightful pro-gram, presented by Keohane Funeral Home, Interfaith Social Services, and Weymouth Food Pantry, will provide valuable insights on what materials are good for composting, choosing a location for your compost, and how best to use the compost to get the most out of your garden! !

Attendees will receive a free tomato plant at the workshop, donated by Keohane Funeral Home. Plant. Grow. Share. is a continuation of the Harvest Helpers pro-gram which began several years ago to bring fresh produce to food pantry patrons. Once the seedlings are planted and the tomatoes begin to ripen, participants are asked to consider donating a portion of the harvest to Interfaith’s Food Pantry in Quincy or the Weymouth Food Pantry to help feed the hungry with healthy, fresh produce. “Donations of fresh produce can make a world of difference for hungry people,” said Annmarie Coyle, of Weymouth Food Pantry. John Keohane added, "We have grown a garden at our Quincy and South Weymouth locations for several years now to support this program and are proud to support this important commu-nity initiative. Please join us!"!

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)!

SNAP has been streamlined for seniors (60 or older). Even if you've never applied for assistance, or have been ineligible in the past, there is good reason to consider applying for SNAP benefits now. !

During these difficult economic times, even a modest monthly SNAP benefit can help offset some of your household expenses. Seniors are allowed to maximize their deductions based on housing, medical, and transportation expenses.!

Using SNAP benefits is completely confidential. SNAP recipients use a card which works just like a debit card. For more information or to obtain an application, please contact Kathleen (x3817) or Martina (x3816) in the Outreach Office.!

Requiem For A Car!

By Ed Whittaker May 2018!!

All too soon this is the day of reckoning!Open roads no longer beckoning!

I gaze forlorn at empty space! My vacated parking place!

A driving lifetime now complete! From running boards to belted seats!

Buick, Chevy, often Ford!Filled with memories and reward!

Now I mourn a sturdy Toyota!A worthy capstone to my quota!

And thus I seek with wounded pride!Friends at hand to share a ride!

I need no counsel to remind me!Of better days that lay behind me!

Although I yearn for their return I know it’s not to be!

And so it is with deep unease!I step away and yield the keys.!

Summer Safety Tips !from the Weymouth Health Dept.!

Sun: Minimize Sun Exposure: During the sum-mer season, avoid relying on just sunscreen to protect your child from excess sun exposure. Remember, 80% of our lifetime exposure to the sun occurs during the childhood years. You should start with a good sunscreen and then: Avoid mid-day sun when the sun’s rays are the strongest (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). Cover up with lightweight clothing to protect the arms and legs. Wear a wide brimmed hat/ visor and wear UV sunglasses to protect the eyes. Have lots of bottled water on hand. Note: Some medications make a person more susceptible to sunburn so extra precautions are needed to avoid prolonged sun exposure. A few such medications are Accutane, Retin A, tetracycline, Cipro, thiazides, griseofulvin, sul-fa, Lariam. Check with your doctor or pharma-cist if you are not sure as there are many more that can cause sensitivity when combined with sun exposure. Water Safety: 4000 people drown each year, 9 per day! 5 males to each female. 77 percent

missing from sight for 5 minutes or less! Take swim lessons! Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards Always swim with a buddy. Supervision of all young chil-dren by an adult is important near any body of water If you are going boating wear a life jacket Have family rules for water safety and follow them. Heat safety: young and elderly, overweight and people with chronic conditions can have problems with heat. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Water is the best choice, soda and caffeine drinks are poor choices. Try to avoid being outside in the sun between 10 and 4 on the really hot days. The longer it is hot (heat waves of over 90 degrees) the more danger. Avoid strenuous activity during hot days. Watch extreme temperature changes, going from air-conditioning to heat. Wear light colored clothing. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion:

heavy sweating, severe thirst, weakness, headache, nausea and vomiting. Protect head and face with hat and wear sunglasses! NEV-ER! Leave anyone in a parked car during a heat wave! This includes pets! Lyme disease: From ticks - causes rash, fatigue, fever and flu like symptoms. Wear light colored clothing, use insect repellant with DEET, avoid grassy areas, perform daily tick checks on yourself and your children and promptly remove any ticks(save removed tick for MD). If you think you have been bitten – call your doctor. Mosquitoes and other vectors: EEE, WNV, and Rabies from bats and other wild animals. Wear insect repellant with DEET. Wear protec-tive clothing. Avoid being outside at dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Do not have any standing water around your house. DO NOT handle ANY wild animals! If you wake up with a bat in your home, seek medi-cal attention for yourself and your pet.
