Bury St Edmunds

Another treat is a visit to the brewery where you can take an excellent tour of the brew house, visitor centre and brewery tap.

Bury St Edmunds is also home to the much-loved Theatre Royal, the oldest working Georgian theatre in the country, and a selection of museums and galleries including the Art Gallery, Moyse’s Hall Museum and the Malthouse.

The town is a shoppers’ paradise with an extensive selection of unusual and independent stores lining its historic streets. The twice-weekly market is a great place to spot a bargain.

The new shopping centre 'arc' extends Bury St Edmunds' appeal as a place to live, work and spend quality leisure time.

The retail mix includes Debenhams, Top shop/Topman, H&M, HMV, Monsoon/ Accessorize, Fat Face, Next, Wallis, Paperchase, Waterstones, Clarks, River Island, Costa, New Look, Peacocks, Vodafone and more.

If you want to explore the town’s finest buildings and learn some surprising facts take one of the excellent guided tours offered by the Bury St Edmunds Association of Registered Tour Guides. Tours are available from May-September and booked at the Tourist Information Centre.

Once home to one of the most powerful monastries in Medieval Europe, Bury St Edmunds has seen glory, turmoil and scandal over the centuries the likes of which few small towns could boast. Today it remains a busy and beautiful market town in the heart of East Anglia.

The abbey, built on the site of the shrine of the martyred Saxon King Edmund, rose to fame in the Middle Ages when St Edmund became the patron saint of England.

It is said that at the high altar of the abbey 25 barons swore an oath in 1214 to force King John to ratify the Magna Carta, which he later did at Runnymede in Surrey. Magna Carta was a significant step towards the English democratic and legal system of today. Small wonder Bury St Edmunds is known as ‘Shrine of the King, Cradle of the Law’.

The abbey precinct encompasses the giant ruins of the abbey, the splendid Abbey Gardens, the Cathedral Church of St James and St Mary’s Church. The Abbey Gate and the Norman Tower are the gateways to the precinct, and have become the symbols of Bury St Edmunds.

The Abbey Gardens regularly win national prizes for their superb bedding displays. Based on the botanic gardens laid out by Nathaniel Hodson, they boast many fine and original specimens - and are completely free to enter, every day of the year.

The Norman grid system of the streets makes exploring on foot an easy business. A fine collection of public buildings in the town centre includes the Athenaeum, which opened in 1714 as an Assembly House and has been a centre for social life ever since. It was here that Charles Dickens gave public readings from his books.

The Nutshell Pub in the centre of town is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as Britain’s smallest pub, and is owned by local brewers Greene King.

Best enjoyed on foot, start your day at the magnificent St Edmundsbury Cathedral with its 140ft tower before strolling through the award-winning Abbey Gardens to see colourful floral displays in the summer months.

A short walk away is the recently restored Theatre Royal. Built in 1819 the theatre is the only surviving Regency Playhouse in the country and tours run throughout the week.

After stopping off at one of the town’s lovely cafés for a well-earned lunch visit the Greene King Visitor Centre, a museum devoted to the region’s best-known brewer where you can even sample one of their famous ales – the perfect way to round off your day.

The pretty market town of Clare boasts a variety of antique shops, art galleries, coffee houses and traditional pubs. It was given by William the Conqueror to his relative Richard de Beinfait, the first Earl of Clare, and members of his family played an important part in national history, including the drawing up of the Magna Carta and calling the first popular parliament.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul, built in 1450, reflects the great wealth of the community in earlier times. The town’s fine architectural legacy also includes Ancient House, the town’s museum, timbered and pargetted facades along the streets and the 13th century priory.

The town has 30 acres of landscaped parkland fronting the river Stour, with a visitor centre housed in a former railway station and a romantic, crumbling Norman castle.

Guided walks are available during the summer.

Fire destroyed many of Haverhill’s older buildings in 1665, although Anne of Cleves’ House, once part of the dower of the Queen’s Consort of England, has been renovated. Haverhill is interesting for its Victorian architecture, and there is a local history centre at the Arts Centre on the High Street. The Arts Centre also offers drama, music, comedy and visual arts throughout the year.

East Town Park, situated on the edge of the town, is popular for walks while there is also a children’s play area. With way-marked trails and a visitor centre it offers a great day out for all the family.

New for this year is the opening of the Museum of Computing Science - a museum dedicated to the history of computers.

Medieval LavenhamVisit Ely

South Suffolk has a fantastic range of places to see and visit. Whatever your passion from sightseeing to sailing, antiques to walking there is much to be enjoyed and in the beautiful countryside that has inspired great artists such as Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable.

Around 600 years ago, the cloth industry was thriving with those living and working in Suffolk accumulating significant fortunes. Today this is evident through the number of magnificent buildings that were built by the wealthy cloth merchants. A town that was at the heart of the wool industry was Lavenham and during the reign of Henry VIII it was ranked as the fourteenth wealthiest town in England.

Lavenham is a magical place to visit. The appearance of the town has changed little over the years: half-timbered houses lean crazily over the narrow streets. The Guildhall, built in 1529, is perhaps the town’s most prominent feature, standing in the market place and surrounded almost entirely by timber-framed buildings.

Lavenham has been described as “the finest medieval town in England” and it has no fewer than 300 of its buildings listed as being of architectural or historic interest. This includes the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which is among the finest in East Anglia – a magnificent church with a tower of 141 feet.

Lavenham is a joy to explore. Much recommended is a walk along the disused railway line, followed by a wander through the gift and antiques shops and a cream tea, lunch or dinner in one of the many fabulous tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. Guided walks take place between April and October and the village will be part of the South & Heart of Suffolk Walking Festival which takes place in May.

Tudor House at Lavenham

This small city is full of history, charm and beauty. Without a doubt, Ely’s most popular attraction is its magnificent cathedral, rising majestically into wide-open skies and towering over the fens.

Known locally as the ‘Ship of the Fens’ it is famous for its unique Octagon tower, which when lit, can be seen for miles.

In recent times the cathedral has twice been transformed into a film set for Elizabeth’s I sequel ‘The Golden Age’ starring Cate Blanchett and Henry’s VIII ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’. Along with a visit by David Dimbleby’s 'How We Built Britain', the staff at Ely Cathedral have become accustomed to rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous.

Visit the Stained Glass Museum, housed in the South Triforium of Ely Cathedral, the only museum dedicated to stained glass in the country or step into the home of Oliver Cromwell, one of Ely’s best-known historical figures.

Follow the city’s heritage public art eel trail and explore on foot. This circular walk takes you past the oldest parts of Ely and down to the beautiful riverside area. Ely’s Waterside is a hot spot for visitors wishing to relax and browse the three storey Waterside Antique Centre.

Don’t forget to stop off at one of the traditional tearooms or restaurants, many set in beautiful architecture and stunning gardens. Take the opportunity to visit the many gift shops, craft shops, antique shops, art galleries or markets.

Food

Local and organicA rich agricultural region, West Suffolk is home to many talented people who grow and produce fantastic foods, locally and organically. Visit the colourful market in Bury St Edmunds, popular with locals, as well as one of the bustling farmers markets where you can taste, try and buy everything from honey to wine, ice cream to home-made breads, all grown and produced just a few miles away.

A warm welcome From cosy cafés to modern restaurants, charming tearooms to traditional pubs, there is a great selection of places to eat in and around West Suffolk. Many take advantage of the wonderful foods available and create delicious dishes from seasonal ingredients, produced and sourced locally.

Specialities Newmarket sausages and breweries in Bury St Edmunds… While we’re proud of the many great foods available, sausages and ales are two particular specialities.

Newmarket is home to two award-winning sausage producers, Musk’s and Powter’s, whose reputations are world famous, even amongst the Royal family. And if you’re sampling these in one of the local restaurants then a Greene King ale is the perfect accompaniment. The UK’s largest British-owned brewery is located in the market town and there is also a visitor centre where you can see how it’s made.

Green Tips

1. Can you car-less when you visit?

When getting out and about, try using the bus – you’ll be able to enjoy the views much more that way. There is a regular train service between Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket and other towns in the area, along with bus routes and specialist car-free schemes.

2. Go local, it’s miles better!

It’s all about local distinctiveness. Experiencing local food and drink in a local restaurant or pub really does add something special to your visit. You won’t be far from a farmers’ market or farm shop either. Remember to look out for those taking part in the Suffolk Breakfast Initiative too, which recognises the county’s great food and farming heritage.

3. Become a Destination Detective

Exploring locally can be great fun, so why not consider walking or cycling – it’s good for you and the environment. Take a trip to the Tourist Information Centre for some great ideas on what to do.

4. Re-use and recycle

We take our recycling pretty seriously in Suffolk, so it would be great if you can help us by doing your bit where possible. By placing litter in bins or taking it home to recycle makes the area more pleasurable for others.

5. Small actions, big changes

From just remembering to turn off the lights in your hotel to turning the tap off when you brush your teeth, small changes can make a huge difference. You probably already do lots of these energy saving things at home, so just bring your good habits on holiday too.

St. Mary's Parish Church stands off the High Street, Mildenhall and is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful in Suffolk. The sheer size of the building, 168 feet long by 65 feet wide, is an indication of the wealth of the area in medieval times when the wool trade made Suffolk the industrial centre of England. The church was rebuilt in the 15th century yet retains many original features dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries including its angel roof, wide aisles, woodcarvings and ornate east window. The spectacular ceiling has exquisitely carved angels and the 112 feet tall square tower provides the opportunity to view the surrounding countryside including the River Lark and its riverside walks.

St Mary's Church is now open during the day and the public are welcome to visit. If the church is closed a key is available from Stebbings Shoe Shop on the High Street or for help telephone the vicarage on 01638 711930.

Further information and an Official Guide of St Mary's Church can be obtained through Mildenhall TIC based at Mildenhall Bus Station, T: 01638 581091.

St. Mary's Parish Church

Uniquely situated in the heart of the Brecks and on the doorstep of Thetford Forest, Brandon is an attractive, traditional Country Park covering 32 acres. Informative interpretation boards on site and in the Visitor’s Centre, open daily, which houses gift shop, tea room and tourist information point. How to Book

Please contact the establishment of your choice, stating the dates you require, the number of rooms and any dietary requirements you may have.

Serviced Accommodation

Unless otherwise stated, prices quoted are per person based upon two adults sharing a twin or double room, including VAT. If booking a single room you are advised to check with the establishment of your choice to see if a single room supplement is payable.

Self-catering Establishments

Prices quoted are normally per unit based upon the maximum number of persons in the accommodation.

Touring, Camping and Caravan Sites

Prices are normally quoted per pitch or unit; however, you should confirm this with the establishment of your choice.

Reductions for Children

Please check with the individual establishments for family room and children’s rates.

Cancelling a Booking

When you accept accommodation, you may be entering into a legally binding contract with the proprietor of the establishment. This means that if you cancel a reservation, fail to take up the accommodation or leave prematurely, the proprietor may be entitled to compensation if the accommodation cannot be re-let for all or a major part of the booked period. If a deposit has been paid it is likely to be forfeited and an additional payment may be demanded.

In the case of serviced accommodation, this is usually two-thirds of the contract price, one third being deducted for food not consumed and services not rendered.

Ratings you can Trust

When you are looking for a place to stay you need a rating system you can trust. The Visit Britain (VB) and AA ratings are your clear guide to what to expect, in an easy-to-understand form. Properties are visited annually by trained, impartial assessors, so you can have confidence that your accommodation has been thoroughly checked and rated for quality before you make a booking.

Hotels and Self Catering ★

Based on the internationally recognised rating of one to five stars, the new system puts greater emphasis on quality and is based on consumer research. Ratings are awarded from one to five stars - the more stars, the higher the quality and the greater range of facilities and level of services provided.

Gold and Silver Awards

In addition, look out for The Visit Britain new gold and silver high quality awards for hotel and guest accommodation.

AA Yellow Stars AA ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Yellow stars indicate that an accommodation is in the top ten percent of its Star rating. Yellow stars only apply to 3, 4 or 5 star AA establishments.

AA Rosette Awards AA ÐÐ

The AA awards Rosettes to some 2,000 restaurants as the best in the UK.

West Suffolk

From the late 16th Century through to the Second World War, West Suffolk has formed tight bonds with America and its people. The Great Captain Gosnold

Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, a Suffolk-born adventurer and explorer, led expeditions to America where he made world-changing history. His first expedition to the New World in 1602 was taken after the untimely death of his daughter, Martha, who is buried in the Great Churchyard, Bury St Edmunds – later to become the magnificent St Edmundsbury Cathedral. On this first voyage he named an island after his beloved daughter calling it Martha’s Vineyard, in present day Massachusetts.

Gosnold’s second expedition aboard his ship, the Godspeed in 1607, led to the founding of Jamestown, Virginia and 2007 saw the celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the American settlement. A modern representation of Gosnold’s ship can be seen in the garden of the Cathedral’s Refectory. Several kneelers make reference to the strong links between Suffolk and America, and the cathedral’s treasury was endowed by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.

World War II

During World War II, allied service men and women along with many bomber groups of the American Air Force were stationed in West Suffolk. Two miles east of Bury St Edmunds you will find the Old Control Tower at Rougham, a museum which marks the wartime home of the 94th bomber Group.

Bury St Edmunds is noted for its award-winning gardens, including the John Appleby Rose Garden, a memorial garden dedicated to the American servicemen stationed in West Suffolk. John Appleby, an American serviceman, wrote an account of his journeys (on his bicycle) called ‘Suffolk Summer’ (available from the Tourist Information Centre).

Modern Links

Today, West Suffolk is home to RAF Mildenhall which serves as the lone air refuelling wing for US airforces in Europe. RAF Lakenheath is home to one of Europe’s biggest bomber fleets and was the setting for the James Bond movie ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’.
