Summer Autumn 2012

Message from the Chairman It is supposed to be summer and we do not need to remind you that April, May and June have been the wettest months since records began. One of the problems that this rainfall has caused is localised flooding and the other is blocked drains. Drains do not get cleared by the County Council in current times as much as they used to in years gone by. You will notice that many of our drains are sprouting weeds and the kerbsides and foot-paths are too. Riccall is proud of the clean streets and we are very fortunate to have an

extremely conscientious litter collector in Gary Walker, employed by Riccall Parish Council. As this article goes to print, Lindsey Ryan is speaking to the local authority to find out whether Riccall PC can take over some of the street cleaning services on a delegated authority basis, so that more effort can be put into this locally. In the meantime as you walk out of your house and look over the wall, if you feel like helping us by pulling those few weeds out that lurk on the footpath side of your wall, that would be really helpful. We certainly do not want anyone to go on the highway or weed drains or kerbsides—let us try and sort those problems out. I know that many of you do help us in this way and thanks go to you. It is good when we all come together as a community to solve problems and issues, whatever they may be.

The lighting of the beacon to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee attracted a crowd of around 500 people. Thank you so much to everyone who attended, got into the spirit and sang along. It was a short but poignant event and showed the commu-nity spirit in Riccall, as ever! One resident, Andrew Burns, has made a short video of a resident’s street party in Riccall and there is also some footage of the lighting of the beacon, if you want to watch it. Thanks Andrew for sharing the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YigJ1KJm1aM

Euro cylinder locks Following the concerns raised by West Yorkshire Police relating to the vulnerability of Euro cylinder style locks used mainly on uPVC doors, North Yorkshire Police have issued the following advice. North Yorkshire is one of the safest places in the UK and has the lowest crime rate in England. The number of lock-snapping burgla-ries reported to North Yorkshire Police is minimal compared to other areas. Howev-er, now is an ideal opportunity for householders to carry out a full review of all of their security arrangements including the replacement of Euro cylinder locks, which can be done fairly simply.

The lock on your door is one aspect of domestic security and there are many other things that you can also look at to assist in preventing burglary, some of which will be free of charge.

What is "lock snapping" ? As the title would suggest, this is where the lock cylinder is literally snapped in two

by applying force to the cylinder. Thieves have devised methods of snapping these types of cylinders locks in a mat-

ter of seconds and still be able to operate the lock to open the door. This threat can be considerably reduced simply by upgrading the cylinder to one that is specifically designed to prevent this method of attack. We recommend that

all vulnerable doors using Euro-Profile cylinders be upgraded to incorporate 'Break Secure' cylinders.

Euro cylinders are mainly fitted to uPVC doors but some aluminium and wooden doors also use this type of lock. How do I know if I have a vulnerable lock? You cannot tell from the outside if it is a vulnerable lock, it would need to be dismantled. Although this is fairly simple to do, our advice is to contact a registered locksmith for advice. If you have a Se-cured by Design door fitted after 2010 you can be confident that it will have a "Break Secure" lock. Please note this applies only to Secured by Design doors and not all doors. Solution? Break secure, or anti-snap cylinders, are specifically designed to combat lock-snapping. A cylinder has been designed that although it will snap, it will snap in a predetermined position leaving intact a portion of the cyl-inder that will still provide security and still require key operation to open, thus pre-

venting the easy manipulating of the locking system.

This is a photo of a break secure cylinder - the cylinder is de-signed to break at the points shown leaving the centre locking mech-anism still intact and working. A qualified locksmith can offer a full installation and upgrade service to meet your needs; or a replace-ment break secure euro cylinder can be purchased from any recog-

nised DIY store.

Replacement lock cylinders should meet all parts of the exacting British Standard Kitemark (BS EN 1303:2005) accreditation scheme. A new standard, TS007, is due to be introduced later this year following the concerns raised by West York-shire Police. Look out for details of this in the media and online.

The Master Locksmiths' Association website www.locksmiths.co.uk provides a list of registered locksmiths who will be able to provide advice and information and give you practical help to ensure your locks are suitable. The minimum recommen-dation for wooden doors is five-lever mortice locks which carry the British Standard BS3621.If you have traditional nightlatch (commonly known as a Yale lock) fitted to your doors, do not rely on this as the only method of security. You must fit oth-er locks, preferably deadlocks.

A history of Westfield

Westfield Jubilee Sports-

field in 2012

Westfield was a large area of land that was one of the three village open fields. It extended from the start of present day Landing Lane and beside the river Ouse to the west and south which forms the boundary of Riccall Parish. Westfield spread over 500 acres and it was originally divided into 1,110 narrow strips of land usually 8m wide, each strip separated by raised soil banks. These strips were farmed by the tenants of the village cottages and each tenant would have 3 or 4 strips spread over this field plus strips in both other open fields to ensure that they shared both good and poor land. They must have spent hours walking between their strips! There were endless disputes to sort out in the village Court Leet over the management and ownership of these strips.

Landing Lane did not exist before village Inclosure in 1884. To get to the windmill (now The Spice Mill Indian restaurant) and to the river ferry crossing (by the Environ-ment Agency) there was a stone lane from the corner of present day allotments, di-rectly across to the mill, with extensions joining the present day rights of way adja-cent to Steve Shepherd and Peter Stockdale’s farms or along to the river.

The lane diagonally crossed the present allotment field and new Jubilee Sportsground. Older gardeners can tell you what a nuisance the cobbles stones were and many had to be cleared away when the sportsfield was levelled late last year. The field was awarded to the village at Inclosure and originally was over 5 acres in size. Up to the 1960’s, it was occupied by garden tenants but as they dimin-ished in number, part of the field was let to a farmer.

During the 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars many of the garden tenants built steel sheet-

ed air raid shelters on their allotments and were encouraged to keep hens and rab-

bits to supplement their food rations. This wartime arrangement was cancelled in the

1950’s. I don’t think many nights were spent in shelters but several of these Ander-

son shelters lasted into the 1980’s as garden sheds.

Thanks to Paddy Hodgkiss and Riccall Archive Group for this information

This September will see the opening of the new Sportsfield to the public (see article on front page for details) and the creation of a new facility for Riccall in 2012. The new Westfield Jubilee Sportsfield will be used by Riccall Utd Junior football teams at the weekend for games and during the week for evening training sessions. We are hoping that junior cricket will be played on site and that in time there will be athletics tracks for Riccall children on the site too.

This Sportsfield is a public area, so if there is not a match or sports event in progress, please feel free to use the space with

your family for football, cricket and keeping fit. The idea is that the community will share the open space and that it will benefit

everyone.

Did you have something to add?

This is your section of the Beacon, providing an opportunity for community groups to submit articles about their group and about what it does. Attempts have been made to reach most groups via email but apolo-gies if we have missed yours. Any community group in Riccall can submit an article but we do ask that they are kept to a maximum of around 200 words, so that we can be inclusive and fair to all groups. Ideally please email the article to [email protected] The Beacon will be produced four times per year. Many thanks for all of your articles to date. The remaining deadline for 2012 is 5th October.

The map shows Ric-call as it was about one hundred and

seventy years ago. The open field sys-

Footpath news… The passageway (Carr Lane) at the side of the new Dunelm development, oppo-site Costcutter will be open shortly. This is later than we were told, but the devel-opers have experienced problems with sewerage work connections, which has pro-longed the closure.

Also, the Environment Agency are considering replacing the stiles on the Kelfield Rd approach to the riverbank with gates at our suggestion, to improve access for everyone—we will let you know the out-come.

Many thanks to Riccall Scouting groups and all of those of you that took part in the annual walk of our public rights of way in Riccall during early July. It is important that all of these paths are walked at least annually.

The trustees of this charity manage most of the village owned land and are offering a chance for anybody interested in becoming a voluntary trustee or friend to con-

tact me as the Trust Administrator on 249201. I can then outline the roles that local resi-dents can play that fit in with their personal interests in the local environment. The trust manages land consisting of field garden allotments, nature areas with public walks and recreational areas (which are leased and managed by the Parish Council), all for the en-joyment of residents and visitors to Riccall. Some land that we manage is let to farmers to raise an income. If you are interested in nature, walking, gardening or outdoor activities and have some time to help us and volunteer, then please make contact.

Field gardens of a size to suit you are available with 4 empty field gardens ready now and a further 6 or so vacant by next Spring. Ring Brian our gar-den co-ordinator on 249403 to arrange a viewing.

Riccall got into the spirit over the Jubilee weekend – houses decorated with bunting and lots of you dressing in red white & blue. The fun day at the Re-gen Centre was very popular once again – with many of you coming and

going on the free bus that was running between the village & the Centre. A big thank you to WYSIWYG who entertained us throughout the afternoon and the local Jujitsu club who gave an ex-cellent demonstration.

Thank you to the local scout group who put up and took down the marquees for us and camped out in them. Also thank you to the Regen Centre for allowing us the use of the centre and grounds.

Unfortunately the heavy rain prevented us from having the usual picnic on Sunday. But thank you to Sue & Del, who welcomed us into the Hare & Hounds. Billy Bills entertained us for the afternoon and the pub had the hog roast and BBQ ready.

On Monday, an amazing amount of people arrived at the park with their lanterns, flags, red, white & blue outfits and of course their singing voices! Danny Rodwell, (Riccall’s Olympic torch bearer) lit the beacon at 10-15pm and this was followed by flag waving and singing to patriotic songs, ending with a toast and God Save the Queen!

Thank you to everyone that came along and ended the weekend on a high! A big thank you to Ken Davison, who provided the music for us and to Steve Rodwell for all his help with floodlights, gener-ators and preparations.

Check out our website for the latest photo’s of the weekend –www.riccallcarnival.org

End of Season Review 2011/2012

The club can look back and reflect on a mixed season. The First Team and Reserves

faced tough seasons in the Premier Division and Reserve A respectively. Both managed

to maintain their top flight status for the 2012/2013 season and face a major project in

rebuilding the squad under new 1st Team Manager Gary Collier and General Manager Liam Bradley. The Under

12’s Saturday and Sunday had difficult seasons but fulfilled all fixtures and look to the future. The club will be

operating a Sunday side only for the 2012/2013 season. Our thanks go out to Steve Rodwell, Stuart Davies and

Jenny Rodwell for their massive efforts over the last 3 years. The major success of the club this season was the

Under 9’s, under the guidance of David Lalley and Andy Precious, who won the league title in their first ever

competitive season. Congratulations Lads and Lasses!

Both the Under 7’s and Under 8’s continue to show signs of progression and development.

The Hounds finished the season as League Runners Up as they did for the previous 2 seasons and missed out

on Cup Final action, exiting at the Semi Final stage in 3 of 4 cups.

Congratulations to Under 8’s Coach Danny Rodwell. On Tuesday 19th June, Danny ran the streets of York

with the Olympic Torch. The club is very proud of Danny and his achievements. He recently completed his level

1 coaching badge and puts in many hours of voluntary work with the club. He shows great maturity for his age.

He is a credit to the club and the Riccall community and no one deserved the accolade more.
