WESTERN SWING SOCIETY MUSIC NEWS March, 2014 - Page 2

Hi folks:

Sitting here

watching the rain

come

down...finally.

Boy do we need

it. This has been some dry spell!

Had a great show in February. Too

bad it always falls on Super Bowl

day. But ,you know what??? I did-

n't hurt us all that bad. And it was-

n't all that good of a game. I think

a lot of folks were kind of disap-

pointed anyway.

This was the first time that Gary

Blodgett and his band, ”Big Trou-

ble” had appeared on our show,

and I certainly hope it won't be the

last. Gary is just great on guitar

and vocals and about as fast on the

fiddle as I have ever seen. His bass

player, Dan Cribb, also an out-

standing singer, along with Colleen

Heauser on acoustic and vocals,

really did an outstanding job. Lots

of three part harmony, which I

love. The drummer, Cedric Wil-

mott did not sing, but there was no

need to. This guy really plays

drums. Where did they find a man

of this caliber? Then they add Ron-

nie Elkan to the group and we all

just set back and listened to a fan-

tastic band. Thanks guys. We'll

take you back anytime!

Our drummer, Bill Cornett was

absent again this day but our good

friend Biff Adam was on hand.

You won't find a better drummer

than this guy. Thanks Biff! The

rest of the group was on hand.

Brownie on steel, special guest

Jimmy Baughman on a new guitar

JAM-ARANA REPORT

We had a lot of people from the

“Old Time Fiddlers” club and

we were happy to have them.

Melody Aslin played rhythm

guitar; Susie Brown brought in

her dobro guitar; Karen Hellar

played rhythm; Nick Dennis on

guitar and John played fiddle;.

All of them also sang as did John Pope. Other sing-

ers were Pamela Scully, Nancy Long, Yvonne Lew-

is, Bill Enyeart, and George. (Apologies for not hav-

ing John and George's last names.)

My regular performers were the Terry Crouson fam-

ily with Terry playing banjo, wife Betty playing

rhythm and their grand-daughter Amanda on fiddle.

All three did vocals.

Dave Rietz was also playing fiddle, mandolin and

singing. Bobby Giasson couldn't make it this month

so Jeff Felsher took over and played lead guitar all

day. Sam Davidson, my steel guitar player, was sick

and couldn't make it but he promised to be there next

month. Get well Sam. Chuck Webb was my bass

player and Dan Jones was my drummer. Next month

the jam room band will be performing on the main

stage but the jam room will still be open for jammers

so come on back for the fun.

Until Next Month, See Ya !

Barney and survived by a large

Dennis was born in Idaho Falls, ID where he began

his musical career as a teenager. He formed his own

band and played local clubs for a few years.

In 1967, he left Idaho and began the Nevada Casino

Circuit, leaving there in 1972 for Sacramento where

the “40 Grand Club” and “Nashville West” were in

their heyday. He appeared on the California Hayride

and was invited to put a house band together for

“Nashville West,” thus, Dennis Barney and the

Nashville Rebels came to be and played the

“Nashville West” until 1979, when it closed.

Dennis then went back to the Nevada circuit for a

few years, coming back to the Sacramento area in

JIM VANCE

9/3/1942 - 1/27/2014

Inducted October 6, 1991

Jim was born in Knox City,

Texas, September 3, 1942. His

musical career began when he

started playing trombone and

guitar in the 4th grade. When

he began performing profes-

sionally, the first few years

were spent fronting a standard

pop band and playing 30s, 40s, and 50s standard

tunes and Dixieland jazz.

In 1968, he began learning to play bass and changed

back to his musical roots; country and country

swing. Jim played in the San Juan Club in Rancho

Cordova in 1971 and also played Nashville West

with their original country band. After that time, he

was a band leader in the Sacramento area for several

years and played all the major clubs - and some that

were not so major.

Jim continued to played the casual circuit every

weekend with his band, Country Commotion, for the

next 25 years. Many Hall of Fame members, too nu-

merous to mention, played with his band at one time

or another.

He was president of the original County Music Club

and had a column called Vance's Ventures in Bucky

Burl's Country Music News for 3 years, writing

about all the local clubs and musicians.

In later years, Jim became very active in the Eagles

Lodge, served as President and performed regularly

with his band at their functions.

Jim was inducted into the Western Swing Society in

1991. He passed away, January 27, 2014.

Guys like Jim add so much to keeping Western

Swing Music alive. He will be missed.

LAWTON JILES

Inducted 10/3/2013

Lawton Jiles was born on De-

cember 16, 1929 in Sallisaw,

Oklahoma. In 1943 his family

moved to California, first set-

tling in Fresno, then relocating

to Delano.

From his parents Lawton

learned the basic chords on a

guitar, and at age 9 began playing music along with

his brother, Johnny, who was two years younger.

While in High School they formed a band called

“The Valley Rhythm Boys” and began playing club

dates. Lawton on steel guitar and fiddle, Johnny on

lead guitar. The band included a drummer and a

rhythm guitarist who was also the vocalist.

In 1951 Lawton joined the United States Air Force

serving 3 years. Brother Johnny kept the band going

until Lawton's return.

Following his discharge from the Air Force Lawton

began to take his song writing capabilities seriously.

In 1956 he recorded 4-songs with Buck Owens on

lead guitar, Bill Woods on bass and Johnny “The

Texas Drummer Boy” Cuviello of Bob Wills fame

on drums. They began a nightly radio show on

KCHJ in Delano, California, 5-nights a week (Both

Woods and Cuviello are in the Sacramento Western

Swing Society Hall of Fame.)

In 1957, Lawton formed a song-writing partnership

with his brother-in-law, Charles "Buster" Bean with

Buster as co-writer. The two landed a deal with Four

Star Records and began writing songs for newcom-

er, Patsy Cline, the biggest hit was “Let The Tear-

drops Fall.” They also wrote for Porter Wagoner,

Norma Jean, Rusty Draper, T. Texas Tyler, Janie

Frickie and others. (Rusty Draper is also in the Sac-

ramento Western Swing Society Hall of Fame.)

In 1960, Lawton signed with King Records, releas-

ing an album. He soon joined KUZZ radio, owned

by Buck Owens, as a disc jockey.

In 1961, Lawton joined Buck Owens’ band as its

leader, and the Bakersfield Sound was beginning to

be defined. Following 2 years with Owens, Lawton

returned to his business world and continued writing

music. In late 1980 he built his own recording studio

in Upland, California and in the early 1990's became

sole owner of Beam Records, recording and produc-

ing other artists.

In May 1993 the Patsy Cline collection containing

six songs written by Lawton and his brother-in-law,

Buster, went Gold and in August 1998 the album

went Platinum.

At 81 years of age, although having had numerous

surgeries and not in the best of health, Lawton con-

tinues to sit in with Tommy Hays and His Western

Swingsters, with Jimmy Phillips on drums and vo-

cals. Both Tommy and Jimmy were inducted into

the Sacramento Western Swing Society Hall of

Fame in 2013.

Lawton and his wife, Ruth, reside in Upland, in
