Hi Y’all:
The Proration
Train has left the
depot. So if your
current member-
ship is due in Au-
gust, then pay $18.35 Couples or
$13.75 Single. In September it
will be $16.70 Couples or $12.50
Single.
It’s been a busy 12 months since I
became President in June, 2014.
Working with the Board of Direc-
tors (BOD) has been a pleasure. It
appears we have discovered all the
potholes in the road we’re on.
We’ve squared ourselves with our
insurance company, the IRS, the
BOE and our website. The bar and
food areas have been stabilized.
New safeguards have been put into
place to protect the future.
The implementation of the Single
Pay Date for membership renewal
will enhance our money manage-
ment. It’s just anothe step in plac-
ing our financial future on sound
footing.
Our rent, even though a significant
monthly expense, is substantially
less than similar venues. In fact,
when you add it all up seating for
200, large dance floor, ample,
close-by parking, storage room,
jam room and bar and food areas,
we have a good deal. We’re fortu-
nate to have the Machinists Hall.
The BOD will continue to grapple
with the cost of the mailed news-
letter in the months to come. It
appears it will be 2016 before re-
viewing it again.
Those interested in running for

In July the Jam
Room Band played
on the main stage. I
have to say, these
guys and gals put
on a great show. It
just goes to show
you how talented the musicians
are that come in the jam room.
On stage I had Bobby Giasson and
Lenny Serdahl playing lead guitar
and they both did some singing.
My steel man was Sam Davidson
and he also did some singing. The
man on fiddle was Tom Gunter-
man, he did a great job of playing
and singing too. Chuck Webb was
my bass player and he also helps
me set up the music equipment
and helps me put it away at the
end of the day. Now I can’t leave
out my girl singers, they were
Jeanette Giasson, Peggy Van den
Broek and Nancy Long. They all
did a fine job. Thank you guys and
gals for a job well done.
In the jam room, Bill Enyeart was
running the show. He had himself
playing lead guitar and bass. An-
other lead guitar player was Dave
Bryon and they all did some sing-
ing. Billy Smith played fiddle and
Bill Cornett played drums. Other
performers were Roy Hannah,
Tommy Thomsen and Karen Hel-
ler. They all played guitar and
sang. I think Gene also sang.
That should do it for this month,
we’ll do it again in August.
Until Next Time, See Ya

ALBUM REVIEW by Mike Gross
Album: The West of My
Life
Artist: Trailmix
Label: Spur of the Moment
This very enjoyable new CD
features a live show by this group at Boule-
vard Music in Culver City, CA. Mike Mahaney
fronts the group and does vocals, plays gui-
tar and does the talking. Fred Sokolow plays
lap steel, mandolin, guitar and does harmony
vocals. Fred's wife, Lynn Shipley Sokolow
plays bass and Western Swing music legend,
Bobby Bruce plays some of his world famous
awesome fiddle and does harmony vocals.
There is lots of talk and 13 very enjoyable
music classics
The opening song is the long time Gene Autry
theme, Ray Whitley's Back in the Saddle Again. Many of the other songs reprised by
Trailmix were done by Autry over his re-
markable career including the Kennedy and
Carr masterpiece, South of the Border. Oth-
er Western gems include Bob Nolan's mag-
nificent Cool Water from the Sons of the
Pioneers and from the public domain, I Ride an Old Paint, Red River Valley and Home on the Range. The group also brings back Cole

Continued from left column Porter's Don't Fence Me in from Roy Rogers
and Hollywood and so many other music
greats over the years. Another western
standard that is reprised is Carson Robison's
Carry Me Back to the Lone Prairie. Western
Swing fiddle legend Bobby Bruce is spotlight-
ed along with the group on Panhandle Rag
from the pen and hit parade of Bobby's long-
time band leader, Leon McAuliffe. Also from
Western Swing there are two from the Bob
Wills library, Cindy Walker's Miss Molly and
Bob's own masterpiece, San Antonio Rose. Another gem that is brought back in Vaughn
Horton's Teardrops in My Heart and the al-
bum closes with Woody Guthrie's folk music
standard, This Land is Your Land. This album is available at both CDBaby.com
and itunes.

BO POSEY Inducted October 5, 2014
Bo Posey began his music career late in life. He al-
ways enjoyed singing and listening to KVOO when
he was younger and working on local farms and
ranches. One evening, 12 years ago, Bo was at
Mike’s house (one of his friends) and he picked up a
fiddle. He thought to himself that he just might be
able to play a fiddle. He had tried for years to play
the guitar to no avail. Little did he know what God
had in store for him. Bo plays the fiddle by ear. He
practiced diligently and was sent to the barn by his
wife for about 4 months while learning. She now
lets him play in the house and loves hearing him
play the fiddle and sing. Bo owns his own construc-
tion company and ranch. He and his wife have 2
children.
“OKIE” PAUL WESTMORELAND Inducted March 7, 1982
9/19/1916 - 6/21/2005
Having rolled west with the Dust Bowl migration,
“Okie” Paul Westmoreland could pull from the
harsh life he’d lived and seen to write his only hit
song, “Detour”. Despite the grim lyrics he penned,
he never acted forlorn. At his Sacramento honky-
tonk (The Detour Inn) years later, he always sang
the country tune smiling, with a driving upbeat tem-
po. People would dance. It was Westmoreland’s an-
them.
“Headed down life’s crooked road
A lot of things I never knowed
And because of me not knowin’, I now pine
Trouble got in the trail
Spent the next five years in jail
Should have read that detour sign.”
Westmoreland died June 21, 2005, in Sacramento at
the age of 88. He was born in Texas on September
19, 1916, but raised in Oklahoma. He and his farm-
ing family were pushed out to Arizona in the
1930’s.He rode with his brother in an old car when
gas was 5 cents a gallon.
“He did everything he could to get a dime or a nick-
el or whatever,” said Ola Louise Westmoreland, his
former wife. He peddled oranges in a wagon. He
picked potatoes. He picked cotton. Even after he
made it though, royalties streaming in from
“Detour”, he looked back on his rough roots with
affection.
Dreams of acting pulled him to Los Angeles, where
he performed skits with touring “Jennings Tent
Show”. Later, playing guitar in a band at night,
working at a machine shop by day, and writing
songs in his spare time, Westmoreland finally broke
through musically. He was thinking up lyrics and
watching a band saw cut steel at work, when he hit
upon “Detour”.
“A chill went up my back,” he told Country Music
News in 1976. “I wrote (the song) before that chunk
of steel was cut in two. I wrote it in less than 15
minutes. And I never changed a word.” The 1954
song was eventually recorded and made popular by
Spade Cooley, Dean Martin, Willie Nelson, and Pat-
ti Page, among others.
Continued in right column
Continued from left column
Westmoreland made up more than a hundred songs.
Unable to read or write music, he paid his friend
Charlie Hull to set them down in music so he could
copyright and promote them. “Some of them were
very good, but he never came up with another
“Detour”, said Hull.

JOHNNY GIMBLE CELEBRATION
We’re going to bring you with us to the Johnny
Gimble Celebration, as we walk together saying
our final "So Long" to a remarkable legend and star.
It was held in the town of Luckenbach, Texas on
June 7, 2015. The place was packed to the rafters.
Four hours of Gimble style Texas Swing offered by
the best. Ray Benson emceed most of the show, and
spoke about times he, his band and Johnny Gimble
worked and played together. Thank you to all the
talented people for appearing on that glorious day
including Alex Dormont, Louise Rowe, Dave Alex-
ander, Emily Gimble on keys, Dick on bass, Paul
Anastasio, Danny Levin, too many to name.
One well-known band leader, musician and vocalist
from Austin said, "Look at this: you have 10 or 12 of
the world's best fiddlers right here under the same
roof." Barbara Gimble said she was thrilled so many
people came. Daughter Cyndy danced the afternoon
away and along with Dick and Barbara smiling and
hugging and enjoying the fellowship, the Gimble
family set the tone of the day.
Jason Roberts was there, Snuffy, Katy Shore, Wes
Westmoreland, I can’t name them all. Ted Scanlon
came in from NM, Paul from WA state, players from
all around Western Swing country joined us in an
extraordinary afternoon of friendship and comfort.

such a successful and busy artist can find time to

themselves proud by providing us with some great
dance music to kick off the afternoon. There was
Tony on drums; Sam Davidson-steel guitar; Bobby

man-fiddle and Chuck Webb-bass. Joni Morris en-
tertained with some Patsy Cline along with vocals
by Bobby’s wife Jeanette, Bobby himself, Tom,

As usual the Dry Creek Band completed the after-
noon of dancing with another stellar performance.
