With the Managers meeting now completed, (Thursday 3 March) it’s a clear indication that the season is just around the corner. Suggest now’s the time to lace up the boots for a few training sessions, given the season kicks off on Sat 2 April.

Speaking of training, the club organised basic CPR Training for all attendees at the Managers meeting to ensure each senior team had at least one player with knowledge of CPR and defibrillator usage. Further opportunities to extend the CPR training beyond this group are being investigated and will be communicated shortly.

Training nights at the club (for those not already involved in pre-season squads) will start week

commencing 7 March. Please liaise with your managers if you are unsure which nights and/or fields you’re scheduled for training.

Lastly, but most importantly is a reminder to all players to register online asap. We would like to avoid the typical chasing up of Team Managers, as this distracts the club from working on the many tasks required to get the season up and running.

Your assistance would be much appreciated.

There was a hint of anticipation in the air as the sponsors and committee annual match kicked off on Saturday 5 March. With the Green and White Hoops, lead by Darren White and Myer and the Black Outs lead by Stevie Wildsmith and Patrick Wilson, this was going to be as competitive as a North London derby.

It wasn’t long before the Green and Whites Hoops took advance of some sloppy defending and slotted home an easy goal. Ralph Walker, after missing a couple of howlers, then produced a wonder ‘Roy of the Rovers’ strike from outside the area, nobody was more surprised then him. Mini Reis then went close and with Ethan working well with his old man, Michael, on the right hand side of the pitch, the Green and Whites were in total control. Shouts of “who are ya?, who are ya?” and ‘it’s just like watching Brazil’ sang from the balcony.

The Black Outs continued to be dominated, but with Graham Shaw and Neil Emblen controlling the centre and Scotty Shepherd and his dad, yes 82 year old Jimmy Shepherd, causing havoc down the right wing, it was only

a matter of time before they were back in the game. Patrick Wilson hit a thunderous strike, only to see Liam tip it over the bar for a corner. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until Darren White had cooly scored a gorgeous left footed volley and a J’Lo an acrobatic volley, that the Black Outs called on the help of the children. With the young players now on the pitch and showing the type of skill that the adults can only dream about, it was game on.

Zoran wasn’t giving much change to the new Black Out youngsters, but they smelt fear and attacked in numbers. With the Cunnington boys, Matty and Tommy linking up nicely, Tommy soon had a hat-trick to his name and carried the match-day ball home under his shirt in honour.

Thanks to all who came and took delight in other players mishaps and misses. We’ll do it again soon.

Whilst Geoff is recovering from his cardiac arrest, all football development at Western Springs is being run by our Director of Football, Neil Emblen and Acting FDO, Andy Vernon.

Andy coached the 11th grade Bullets last season in his first year in NZ and guided them to the Premier League title. Prior to this he coached in the UK for 10 years, with children aged 5 upwards. Most recently this was with Liverpool Schoolboys Under 15’s

and Merseyside Schoolboys Under 14’s. Andy gained coaching qualifications up to the UEFA C licence in the UK and is now working towards the B licence with NZ Football.

This season Andy is coaching both Bullets and Cruzeiro (14th grade Metro team)

Andy is a scouser and an Everton fan, so if you see him at the Club, please pass some banter or just a ‘hello’.

APRIL SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES

www.wsafc.org.nz March 2016 11

www.wsafc.org.nz March 2016 13

Christmas day at the grandparents’ house in England brought a huge surprise for Frank Snell of the 12th grade Regulators – an envelope containing a personal request from Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane to come to White Hart

Lane the following day to be one of Spurs’ match day mascots. Needless to say, Boxing Day 2015, Spurs v Norwich City, will now live long in Frank’s memory.

The day started by meeting his fellow mascots and being presented with full Tottenham strip. They were then taken to meet the Spurs players who signed Frank’s shirt he’d received for Christmas and he was able to tell Erik Lamela that he was his favourite. The players gave the mascots a good 30 minutes of their time before heading to the changing rooms to prepare for the match. This was a kids only meet leaving many a disappointed dad waiting back in the mascots’ room.

A quick bite to eat and then it was a nervous wait for Frank and his new mates waiting for the call to head down to the tunnel for pairing up with the players for entrance onto the pitch in front of 36,000 fans and a worldwide TV audience. It was shortest to tallest order for the mascots which meant Frank was last to appear walking out with Spurs’ key midfielder, Mousa Dembele. Then the ritual shaking of hands with the Norwich opposition followed by official team photograph.

The mascots were tasked with gathering up the players’ tracksuits and then undertook a lap of the ground soaking up the atmosphere before heading to the stands to settle in for Spurs’ comfortable 3-0 victory.

It wasn’t Frank’s first visit to the Lane but certainly the most memorable one. A perfect day was capped off by a coke and pint (for dad) in a rowdy Tottenham pub and then off to Brick Lane for a curry. What more could a boy want for Christmas?

16 March 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

As dawn was breaking, the traffic was already heavy down Meola Road as teams started to arrive for our 12th grade tournament.

With 16 teams from all over Auckland including; Bucklands Beach, Warkworth, Norwest, Hibiscus Coast, Eastern Suburbs, Beachlands Maraetai, Three Kings Utd, Birkenhead, Fencibles and Onehunga Phoenix, it was going to be a good pre-season test for our three 12th grade development teams; Bullets, Vipers and Regulators.

There was a huge amount of talent on display and all teams playing football in the right spirit. Unfortunately WS Vipers lost on penalties to Onehunga Phoenix in the Championship Qtr Final and Regulators got knocked out in their Plate Qtr Final by Eastern Suburbs Lilywhites - losing 1-0.

The Bullets got as far as the Championship Semi-final, before losing 3-2 on penalties.

Birkenhead FC took out the Plate Final (beating Three Kings United 3-0) and Eastern Suburbs the Champions final (beating Hibiscus coast on penalties). Well done to those teams.

All in all, a fabulous football occasion and a tournament that ran really smoothly on the day. Thank you to all our players, parents and coaches who did WSAFC proud.

All games were refereed by some of our brilliant young talents - Curly, Frankie, Dane, Connor, Sam, Dylan, Josh and Daniel - so a big thank you to them for controlling the games (and the coaches!).

Big ups to the tournament organisers: Tracy and Mike Cunnington and for Vitesse for running the delicious BBQ fundraiser.

Building on the Small Whites and McDonald’s Skills Zone programmes, McDonald’s Junior Football cements McDonald’s position as a key supporter of junior football in New Zealand. McDonald’s is working with New Zealand Football to increase the number of young players registered with clubs around the country, and also providing additional resources to football development officers. 15,000 footballs will also be handed out to Kiwi kids through the season.
