The new $30 million Mountaineer Field House was opened in the spring of 2014.

Western State Colorado University, the highest four-year institution of higher learning in the United States at 7,703 feet above sea level, opened its doors to students 103 years ago this fall and celebrated a century of educating educators three academic years ago.

Western is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, with academic programs that take advantage of the natural laboratory that surrounds campus. The college has the only college-based Mountain Rescue Team in the nation and is consistently ranked by National Geographic and Fly Rod and Reel Magazine as one of the top colleges for students to experience outdoor recreation.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain are both within an hour drive of campus for winter sports, and Hartman Rocks features a range of activites in the summer. The City of Gunnison hosted the start of the “Queen’s Stage” of the USA Pro Cycling Tour, which several international cycling experts called one of the toughest stages to receive certifi cation.

The Mountaineers have maintained one of the top small college athletic programs in the nation, with the fourth-highest average in the history of the Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup. With 90 RMAC championships, 107 individual national championships and 15 national team championships, the Mountaineers have been building “Champions Out of Thin Air” since the college opened in 1911. The programs have maintained one of the top graduation rates in Division II when compared to the student body, with several programs outpacing the national average many times over.

FOOTBALLMOUNTAINEER BOWL

Sitting at an elevation of 7,750 feet, Mountaineer bowl is the highest collegiate football and track complex in the world.

The Western State Colorado University Mountaineers moved from the existing fi eld below the current University Center to Mountaineer Bowl in 1948, and broke the new facility in with a 20-0 contest against Colorado School of Mines. Since then, the facility has seen 19 RMAC championship teams play on the surface, and was the site of the 1991 NAIA Division I National Quarterfi nal game.

Today, the facility can seat 4,000 fans in the permanent seating, with room for thousands more on the hillside surrounding the fi eld.

Mountaineer Bowl features a pair of press boxes - one for game-day staff and one for radio and working media.

The Bowl also features an offi cial collegiate track, which was rebuilt and resurfaced in 2006 with an eight-lane track and resurfaced again in 2010. A new scoreboard, with messageboard and audio system, was installed the year before in 2005.

The facility hosted the 2008 and 2012 RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Bowl is also used annually for the spring commencement for Western State Colorado University.

FOOTBALLJas Bains looks to lead the Mountaineers to victory in 2014. The Western State Colorado University Head foot-ball Coach is in his fourth season at the helm.

Bains’ fi rst few seasons at Western have been known for his overpowering defense. In 2012, the Mountain-eer defense led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Confer-ence (RMAC) in rush defense and ranked 16th in all of NCAA Division II, allowing only 1,139 yards. The Mountaineer defense followed that with another im-pressive defensive showing in 2013, again leading the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) in rush defense allowing 1,358 yards on the ground.

After a season as defensive and special teams coordina-tor for the Mountaineer football program in 2010, Bains began his fi rst season as Head Coach during the 2011 season.

While Head Coach, Bains has spearheaded community engagement projects with the Gunnison County Partners Organization, the Colorado Department of Transporta-tion and Gunnison County youth. The Mountaineers also hosted a free kids clinic in the spring of 2011 and will established Mountaineer Buddies, a mentoring program with the Gunnison Community Schools.

Bains coached the top kick-blocking team in the RMAC in 2010 and one of the top kick-blocking teams in Divi-sion II. His defense was also ranked among the top half of the conference in interception return average and opponent fourth-down conversion.

Bains spent fi ve seasons as a member of the coaching staff at Chadron State, with the fi nal three as special teams coordinator and defensive secondary coach. He was part of a defensive staff that led the RMAC in total defense, passing defense and opponent fi rst downs. He coached a punter and kicker to All-America honors as the special teams coordinator and tallied 30 blocked kicks in his fi ve seasons. His punt and kickoff returners were consistently ranked among the top fi ve in the nation.

Bains graduated from Fresno State in 2004 where he helped lead the Bulldogs to three bowl victories as a de-fensive back and special teams player against Georgia Tech, UCLA and Virginia. He transferred to Fresno State from Willamette University, where he started at safety as a true freshman.

A native of Fresno, Calif., Bains was the Clovis High School Athlete of the Year in 1999-2000. He was a two-time all-conference safety, a member of state tournament wrestling teams and was a member of the baseball team.

Bains is often a featured speaker at conventions, workshops and clinics on the role of defense and special teams. He is also a talented and respected recruiter in the state of California, as evidenced by the signifi cant increase of West Coast athletes on the Chadron State rosters.

Bains was a member of the Chadron State staff as a graduate assistant before becoming a member of the full-time staff in early 2007. He earned his master’s degree from Chadron State in December 2006.

FOOTBALLKelly Ledwith is beginning his third season in charge of the Mountaineer defense and fourth as a member of the Mountaineer football coaching staff. As defensive coordinator, Ledwith has positioned the Western defense in the upper echelon of all Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) teams.

In 2012, Ledwith’s fi rst season leading the Mountain-eer defense, improved the run defense from last in the RMAC to fi rst, allowing just 103 yards per game. The Mountaineer “Red Rage” defense also led the RMAC in total rush defense and ranked 16th in the entire NCAA Division II, allowing only 1,139 yards. In 2013 the “Red Rage” continued to live up to its name by leading the RMAC once again in rush yards against with 1,358.

The 2012 Mountaineer defense also fi nished with the best overall defense in conference play.

In 2013, he coached Lane Stuht, the fi rst Western State All-American football player since 2004.

Prior to joining the Western State Colorado University football staff in 2011, Ledwith spent three seasons at Fresno City College.

As defensive coordinator and secondary and special teams coach of the Rams of Fresno City College, Ledwith helped lead the team to a pair of Valley Conference championships. Fresno City advanced to the state semifi nals and ranked in the top ten of eight defensive categories, including third in sacks and fourth in tackles for loss. He coached an all-state safety and all-conference cornerback and had several earn scholarships at four-year schools.

Ledwith joined the Fresno City staff as a secondary and special teams coach in 2008 and was part of a staff that knocked off two top-ranked teams in the season. He also coached an all-conference safety in his fi rst season with the Rams.

Ledwith was a graduate assistant at Fresno State in 2007 when the Bulldogs won the Humanitarian Bowl against Georgia Tech. It was his second stint with the Fresno State staff after he was a student assistant from 2002 through 2005. He helped coach the secondary as a student and was part of four bowl appearances and three bowl victories.

Ledwith has also been a member of the coaching staffs at Wagner College, California Lutheran University and Archbishop Mitty High School.

Ryan McDonough begins his fi rst season as the offensive coordinator and third season with the Moun-taineer coaching staff in 2014. McDonough previ-ously served as recruiting coordinator, passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Mountain-eers.

In 2012, McDonough oversaw the signing of 45 total freshman and transfers, one of the largest recruiting classes in Western State Colorado University football history. McDonough also helped to bolster the Moun-taineers’ passing game by signing six quarterbacks.

In 2013, helped Brett Arrivey tie Western State Colo-rado University’s completions record with 30 against Western New Mexico, then beat the previous record by ten with 40 completions against Black Hills State. Brett is already tenth on the list of career passing completions after his redshirt freshman year.

Prior to joining the Western football staff, Mc-Donough worked with the wide receivers and special teams unit with the Chadron State Eagles from 2009-10. In 2010, he helped coach RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year and All-American Kevin Berg and All-RMAC kicker Michael Ziola. In 2009, he was part of a staff that coached Brandon Harrington, an All-RMAC First Team selection at wide receiver.

McDonough was a three-year quarterback at Division III Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. He entered the coaching ranks in 2007 as a student assistant coach for the defensive backs for the Storm after a season-ending injury before his senior season. He was the wide receivers coach at Simpson in 2008.

Justin (J.T.) Haddan begins his fi rst season at Western State Colorado University in 2014. Haddan was named the next of the offensive line coach for the Mountaineers on Feb. 24, 2014.

Haddan comes to Western State from Colorado State University - Pueblo where he was the tight ends coach for the ThunderWolves. As the tight ends coach, Hadd-an helped CSU-Pueblo’s Roger Pfannenschmid to be-come an All-Conference, All-Region and All-American selection in 2013. Hadden also helped coach the Thun-derWolves to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship in 2013.

As an offensive lineman for the ThunderWolves from 2008-2012, Haddan earned All-Conference, All-Region and All-American honors in 2012.

Haddan graduated from CSU-Pueblo in 2012 with a degree in exercise science.

Quad Sanders enters his fi rst year with the Mountaineer football program in 2014.

Prior to coming to Western, Sanders was the defensive line and special teams coordinator at McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas from 2012 through the 2013 season. Sanders was responsible for the defensive line, breaking down the run and pass game, to go along with all special teams and schemes. Along with recruiting duties, Sanders was the academic liaison for the football team.

For the two years leading up to his position at McPherson, Sanders was a graduate assistant at the University of Central Arkansas. During his time at Central Arkansas, Sanders helped coach the defensive line, was the offensive and special teams scout coach and developed and implemented kick-off coverage plans.

Sanders graduated with a B.S. in health education from Central Arkansas in 2009 after playing football for Bears for two seasons, to go along with a year of track and fi eld and a year of men’s basketball.

Jeff Williamson begins his 23rd season as an assistant coach for the Mountaineers in 2014.

In 2013, helped Austin Ekeler get named to the Don Hansen All-Super Region IV Offensive fi rst team. Ekeler was also named RMAC Freshman of the Year while rushing for 1,049 yards.

In 2012, helped Germaine Daniels run for 1,035 yards and earn RMAC third team All-Conference.

Williamson played at Western from 1980-84 as a running back under Hall of Fame Coach Bill Nixon.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Williamson became a Gunnison resident in 1986 and now works for the Sherriff’s Department.

Sean Corcoran begins his fi rst season with Western State in 2014. Corcoran will primarily serve as linebackers coach for the Mountaineers.

Prior to Western, Corcoran coached linebackers and special teams at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California. Along with the responsibili-ties of coaching, Corcoran ran position meetings, special team meetings, and assisted in recruiting and operations.

While at Golden West, Corcoran helped coach the team to the team’s fi rst ever playoff berth and had the best defense in the CCCAA. In 2011, Golden West was the CCCAA Central Conference Bowl Champions. During his ten-

ure at Golden West, Corcoran coached three fi rst team all-state linebackers and six all-conference linebackers.

Corcoran also has experience coaching at the professional level as a football and team operations assistant dur-ing the 2010, 2011 and 2012 summers with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in 2008 as an intern with the Oak-land Raiders.

After a career ending injury at California Lutheran University, Corcoran graduated from the University of Ari-zona with degrees in sociology and history in 2009.

SEAN CORCORAN

Aarrhon Flores joins the Mountaineer football staff in 2014. Flores will be the primary receivers coach for Western State.

Prior to joining the Western staff, Flores was a part of the West Texas A&M University receiving core from 2009-2012. Team captain in 2012, Flores helped lead the Buffs to two Lone Star Conference (LSC) Championships in 2009 and 2012. West Texas A&M also made it to the NCAA Division II quarterfi nals in 2012.

Along with winning two conference championships, Flores helped lead the Buffs to Kanza Bowl Championships in 2009 and 2011.

From February 2014 - June 2014, Flores taught at Ed Irons Jr. High School where he also coached football and track and fi eld.

Flores graduated from West Texas A&M University with a B.S. in sport and exercise science in 2013.

FOOTBALLRULES FOR BOOSTERS

Everyone associated with the Western State Colorado University Athletics program (coaches, staff, student-athletes, boosters) has the responsibility to comply with NCAA rules involving pros-pects and student-athletes. Mountaineer athletic support groups are a very valuable part of the Western Athletic Department. All present and past members of these groups are considered boosters and therefore, are held to compliance with these standards. Please review the information on what boosters may or may not do, and ask before you act.

Recruiting GuidelinesA Booster may:• contact a prospect as long as the booster had an established relationship prior to the student becoming a prospect and as long as there is no attempt to recruit the prospect for Western;• watch a prospect’s athletic contest (but not have contact with that prospect or the prospect’s parents); and• provide names, statistics, newspaper articles, etc. of outstanding prospects from the booster’s local area to Western coaches and staff (but not contact that prospect’s coach or school offi cials in order to gather materials pertaining to the prospect’s athletic or academic abilities).

A Booster may not:• contact (telephone or in writing/e-mail) a prospect or his/her parents in person, for the purposes of recruiting the prospect;• make contact with a prospect or his/her parents on or off the Western campus for the purposes of recruiting his/her to Western;• mail anything to a prospect, including press releases, media guides, posters, schedule cards, etc.;• approach a Western coach who is with a prospect either on or off the Western campus;• contact or request anything (transcript, videotape) from a prospect’s counselor or coach in order to evaluate the athletic or academic ability of a prospect; and• provide any extra benefi t to a prospect or his/her family or friends.

Rules Regarding current Western Student-AthletesA Booster may:• provide an occasional family home meal to a student-athlete or an entire team. Such meal must take place in the home, not in a restaurant. The meal may be catered.• provide employment under certain circumstances to current student-athletes. Student-athletes must be paid the established rate (in the area for similar services) for work actually performed.

A Booster may not:• provide extra benefi ts to any student-athlete and his/her family;• use the name or picture of a student-athlete to directly or indi-rectly promote the sale or use of a commercial product or service;

• provide free or reduced rate housing for a student-athlete or his/her family;• hire a student-athlete to house-sit;• provide an honorarium to a student-athlete who has been approved for a speaking engagement. Student-athletes may receive only actual and necessary travel ex-penses to pre-approved speaking engagements; and• provide any extra ben-efi t to a current student-athlete.

Student-Athlete EmploymentA student-athlete may be employed during or outside the academic year, provided:• The student-athlete’s compensation does not include any re-muneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following that he or she has obtained because of athlet-ics ability;• The student-athlete is compensated only for work actually performed;• The student-athlete is compensated at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services; and

Employer “Do’s” and “Don’ts”• The athletic department may arrange employment for prospects in the summer prior to their enrollment as freshmen and for enrolled student-athletes during all offi cial vacation periods (sum-mer, winter, spring) during the academic year.• Do not provide free transportation to and from jobs for student-athletes, unless such transportation is provided to all employees.• Do provide employment for prospective and currently enrolled student-athletes during permissible time periods and at regular pay rates for similarly qualifi ed non-athlete employees.
