Culture of Evidence – Overview

A wide variety of data (financial, budgetary, student, human resources, etc.) is available 24x7 via online, web-based systems.

Systems are open and transparent – access to the data warehouses is NOT limited by (or restricted to) department, fund, etc.

Authorization is granted directly by departments via an online, web based system – those who “need to know” are granted access immediately.

Feedback – Student Data Query System

“Several years ago CNAS instituted a Learning Community program called CNAS Scholars where students volunteered to take a 1 unit discussion and workshop to support their CHEM 1A class. Statistical analysis [showed that] the students who took the voluntary support activities had markedly higher grades in CHEM 1A than those who did not. Due to those results, all CHEM 1A students must now enroll in lecture, laboratory and a mandatory discussion section now receiving 5 units for the class instead of the typical 4…. It is important for Chemistry and CNAS to be able to justify the addition of the extra unit as important to the success of the CHEM 1A students. My office is generating this data since we were able to very quickly pull the grades from all sections of CHEM 1A, CHEM 1HA and CHEM 1LA (the newly separated laboratory section) [using the SDQS] to compare them to the grades students received in CHEM A [in previous years] without the extra discussion section.”
