    SURREY STUDENTS

Westerham re-opensnew-look 8th greenA er years of having to endurea temporary green on its eighthhole during wet weather, members at Westerham GolfClub in Kent are eagerly awai ngthe opening of a completely newgreen in me for the summergol ng season.

The pu ng surface on thesmall two- er green su ereddrainage problems during thewinter months, leading to atemporary green being put inplace for long periods, whichwas not ideal for the club or itsmembership.

However, the club, which isowned by the Altonwood Group, has now unveiled a completelyre-designed green, which hasbeen enlarged to the right, the

le -hand bunker removed andthe right-hand bunker raised up.

This means more of the greensurface is visible when playingfrom the bunker, and there will bean increase in pin-posi ons away

from the tree at the front-le ofthe green.

A number of trees towardsthe rear of the green have beenremoved, improving the light andair- ow to the pu ng surface.

Although the er has beenremoved, the green will remain areal test, as there are a numberof contours owing through thegreen, while the low front edgewill gather any shots that fallshort.

The backdrop of exposedpine trees and newly-plantedRhododendrons make the holeaesthe cally pleasing from thetee.

Set in mature woodland, withstunning views across the NorthDowns, Westerham, which rst

opened in 1997, o ers a 6,329-yard, 18-hole parkland course, with its tree-lined fairways andthree water features giving thelayout a maturity far beyondits years.
