Discover our historyThe original occupants of the district were the Wiradjuri people. Explorer John Oxley was the first European to investigate the area in 1817,prophesying that “From want of timber, grass and water, it would never be inhabited by civilised man”.
Despite this statement squatters began to settle the district in1833 recognising the area’sagricultural potential. Vast sheep and cattle runs were introduced and the area became knownas 'The Blands’' after a Sydney doctor.
It was not until Joseph Neeld discovered gold in 1893 that a centralised settlement developed. The town of Wyalong was laid out in 1894 to service the new population of up to 10,000. However, a settlement to the west at the ‘Main Camp’ had already developed which also boasted the ‘White Tank’, the only established water supply. Hence in 1895 West Wyalong was officially laid out. West Wyalong’s crooked main street reflects these early days as it follows the original bullock track that curved around trees and gold diggings. The Wyalong fields were reported as one of the most productive gold fields in the state until the 1920s.
There is plenty heritage to see, look out for cast bronze information plaques on some historic buildings and the interpretive street panels, that help complete a picture of the past. For more information on goldmines

Wetlands Boardwalk & Green CorridorWooden boardwalks give easy access to the beautiful ‘Wetlands’ with informative panels and shaded seating (Map: D-10).The nearby ‘Green Corridor’ shared walking/cycling path, runs between Wyalong and West Wyalong, via the ‘RSL Memorial Arch Walkway’ (Map: C-9). There is also a shared path to the golf course (Map:D-1).

west of West Wyalong, Wyalong was originally planned as the administrative headquarters of the region. The architecturally stunning Old Courthouse is now Wyalong Museum, it’s collections give an insight to the colourful settlement of the Bland Shire.
Mirrool - located (32Km - 25min) South of West Wyalong on the Newell Highway. Mirrool is the home of the Mirrool Silo Kick, a unique and hotly contested competition to kick a football clear over the huge grain silos. The spectacle is held annually on the 2nd Saturday in October.
Call in the charming old-style Mirrool Hotel, meet the locals, learn the nicknames and experience country hospitality at its best.There is a shady park with a well equipped child play area and also a free camp site with showers & bbq facilities, a small charge is made for power.

Tallimba - is a small community (approx 30 residents) surrounded by rich agricultural land. Reached by a scenic 30min drive from West Wyalong, Tallimba’s
village centre boasts a shady park with all facilities and a host of children's play equipment. Opposite a quaint village Inn/post office serves up beverages, meals and offers powered parking sites for caravans/motorhomes.
Barmedman and The Mineral Pool
This town with a truckstop, hotel, accommodation and bowling club is just (32Km 25min) drive on the Goldfields Way from West Wyalong.
Barmedman boasts a mineral swimming pool that originates from the flooding of goldmines by an underground stream in the 1880s. The large pool is run by locals, and situated on a four-hectare reserve looking out over the bush.

In October (3rd Sat) the local community host the Barmedman Modified Tractor Pull. See tuned-up tractors pull weighted sleds, enjoy food stalls, country markets and rides for the kids. The engines of the crazy tractors scream and powerful exhausts flame into the night sky as darkness falls.

Naradhan - on the road to Lake Cargelligo from Rankins Springs, Naradhan is a small town with strong agricultural origins. The fully restored Historic woolshed built in 1888 (can be seen from the main road) is one of the last great woolsheds in the region. Visits to the woolshed can be made by appointment (02) 6896 9802.

Ungarie - (43kms-32min) north west on the road to Lake Cargelligo. The town has a wonderful open air swimming pool (pictured left) and a population of approximately 400 residents. Interesting shops like ‘Dis N Dat’ plus eating at the Majestic Café, Central Hotel or Club make the visit worthwhile. Accommodation can be found at the Pines Motel/Service Stn or at the camping facilities which include a dump point.
Weethalle - West on the Mid Western Highway (57km - 41min) ‘The Whistle Stop’ former railway station (1923) is perfect for a Devonshire tea. Don't forget to visit Weethalle’s Museum and Bill Brown’s Vintage Machinery Collection or to try a classic Aussie meal at the Roadhouse & Road Kill Grillz. Accommodation can be found at the Royal Hotel or the Travellers Rest Motel.
