By Major Jeffery Schrock Wing Public Affairs Officer Civil Air Patrol Wings from Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia volunteered its assis- tance over the Labor Day Weekend to the West Virginia Air National Guard's 167th Airlift Wing as they hosted an open house and air show on September 4 - 5, 2010 in Mar- tinsburg, W.Va. The group consisted of units from the Winchester Compos- ite Squadron (Virginia), Hagerstown Composite Squadron (Maryland), and Charleston, Clarksburg, Mar- tinsburg, and Mid Valley Squadrons (West Virginia Wing) Tens of thousands of people were expected to attend, and state, local, and military po- lice were prepared to accom- modate the influx of visitors expected. Building on the success of the 2008 Spirit of America Over Martinsburg Air Show, the 167th Airlift Wing, along with the Eastern West Vir- ginia Regional Airport, and the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, brought together some of the nation's most exciting aerial demonstration teams which included the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Golden Knights. Various military and civilian aircraft and aviation themed exhibits were also on hand. Civil Air Patrol set up a re- cruitment booth which fea- tured a 1940 restored Stinson airplane used in CAP coastal patrols to search for German U-Boats, and a CAP Cessna 182. The highlight at the end of the air show was when CAP had the extreme pleasure to meet Lt Col Derek Routt, opera- tions officer for the USAF Thunderbirds. Routt stopped by the recruitment booth and later took cadets and senior officers to one of the F-16 aircraft used by the Thunder- birds. A group photo with Routt was also taken. Clarksburg Squadron PAO

Clarksburg Squadron Com-

mander Capt Ross White passed

away on July 16, 2010. White

was a member of Civil Air Pa-trol. White was born March 22,

1933 in Clarksburg, W.Va.

Along with being a dedicated

husband and father, Mr. White

was the founder of PDQ Print

Shop in Clarksburg in 1977, and

is still in operation today.

He is survived by his wife,

Murma, two children, two

grandchildren, and one great

grandchild. He was a veteran

having served his country

proudly during the Korean War.

As a member of the Experimen-

tal Aircraft Association, Rossendeavored to instill his true

passion for aviation in young

people.

He organized free airplane rides

for over 100 youth as part of the

EAA “Young Eagle Program.”

He also help arranged and escort

many CAP cadets to the annual

Oshkosh, Wisconsin Air

where these young

aviation enthusiasts

were exposed to many

aspects of aviation.

Ross always loved achallenge. He was

never satisfied to just

make do, but strived to

make each project spe-

cial, fun, and exciting

for everyone.

Ross you will be

missed. Thank You for

friendship and service.

the military and in the civilian

fields. After considering 1,532

applicants, 915 were slotted to

attend some 30+ summer activi-

ties, 599 were first time atten-

dees.Cadet Col David Hill traveled

to Germany with the Interna-

tional Air Cadet Exchange. He

was also on staff of the Cadet

Officer School at Maxwell

AFB, AL. Each summer, hun-

dreds of cadets from eighteen

nations come together to

broaden their understanding of

Four members of the local

squadron have completed Civil

Air Patrol National Cadet Spe-

cial Activities. NCSAs are de-

signed to provide cadets withincentives and motivate them

toward greater participation in

the cadet program.

Special activities broaden the

experiences of participants and

contribute directly to knowledge

aviation, and foreign cultures

through IACE. Selection to

IACE makes a cadet of CAP’s

and the nation’s ambassadors to

the world.

Mitchell completed Cadet Offi-cer School. COS is an in-depth

study of the skills of leadership.

In addition to classes and semi-

nars, a wide variety of top mili-

tary and industry leaders come

as guest speakers to discuss

their experiences with the ca-

dets.

were given a tour by Jim Siver-

ston, a member of the Direct TV

Blimp ground crew.

Cadets gain knowledge on air-

ship construction, how theblimp is controlled in flight, the

necessary size of the ground and

air crews, and had a close up

look of the mechanism that al-

lows lettering to be displayed on

the blimp.

The blimp was first spotted by

Lt Jeff Wheeler, AE officer, on

his way to a scheduled squadron

meeting. Wheeler arrived at the

airport early and made arrange-

ments for the squadron.

“This blimp visit is serendipi-

tous,” said Wheeler. “Our ca-

dets are participating in the

NASA Environmentally Re-sponsible Green Aviation High

School Student Challenge, and

the concept that our cadets came

up with a few weeks ago is a

dirigible. It’s one thing to see a

blimp on paper or in a video,

but it’s another thing to stand

next to it while is sways in the

wind.”

Four cadets and three senior

officers from the Civil Air Pa-

trol Wheeling Composite

Squadron were treated to a sur-prise Aerospace Education field

trip when the Direct TV promo-

tional blimp made an overnight

stop at the Wheeling-Ohio

County Airport on August 23.

The blimp flying down from

Cincinnati, Ohio was traveling

to the PGA Open and landed

because of weather concerns

and availability of an airport

The Honor Guard Academy’s

objective is to provide leader-

ship training to cadets and adult

members that will enable themto introduce the honor guard

program within their unit, wing,

and region.

The program contributes to the

Drug Demand Reduction Pro-

gram, recruiting, and retention

through highly visible public

relations program, as those

members become ambassadors

of Civil Air Patrol.

completed JROTC Aerospace

and Technology Honors Camp

in Albuquerque, NM. Cadets at

this activity work with the top1% of JROTC cadets in the

country.

Students experience the colle-

giate world of science, engineer-

ing, and technology and have

the opportunity to see both civil-

ian and military career opportu-

nities within these fields.

"We have had great activities

here," Col. Dennis Barron, com-

mander of not only the encamp-

ment but also the West Virginia

Wing, said during the week.

"We haven't had any cadets

feeling homesick yet; they're

being very good. “This has been

an excellent encampment," saidBarron, participating in his 46th

encampment.

"This is my fourth encamp-

ment," said Cadet Staff Sgt.

get to meet more people and

make new friends. They're

fun. They allow you do

things other people wouldn't

have a chance to do."

More than 100 cadets from five

wings spent a week getting both

hands-on and classroom expo-

sure to different components of 

Civil Air Patrol through activi-

ties featured at the 2010 West

Virginia Wing Cadet Summer

Encampment.

In all, 104 cadets from not only

the host West Virginia Wing but

also the Maryland, NationalCapital, Ohio and Pennsylvania

wings participating in the en-

campment at Camp Dawson,

training base for the West Vir-

ginia National Guard and Army

Special Forces.

Activities included orientation

rides in a Black Hawk helicop-

ter, building and launching

model rockets, rappelling off a

60-foot tower, moral leadership

courses and land survival train-ing from the West Virginia Air

sets up recruiting

booth at free fun day

for military families

Clarksburg Squadron PAO

Cadets and senior officers with the Clarks-

burg Composite Squadron spent the day

manning a recruitment booth during a free

fun day for military families at the Harrison

County 4-H Center in Clarksburg, W.Va.

The event was free and was open to current

military members and their families serving

in Iraq, and Afghanistan. It was also open to

veterans of both wars.

Activities included a climbing wall, inflat-

able obstacle course, archery and games for

kids. The activity also let families find out

important information about services avail-

able in the community.

The West Virginia Wing of Civil Air Patrol had 11 squadrons and 44 membersin attendance during the last weekend of September to work with state, fed-eral, and local agencies in a joint operations Search and Rescue Exercise atthe Burnwood Center at Fayetteville, W.Va.
