Wheeling Squadron PAO
Major Paul G. McCroskey II has
taken command of the Civil Air
Patrols Wheeling Composite
Squadron, the informal cere-
mony was held at the CAP com-plex at the west end of the
Wheeling-Ohio County Airport.
Major McCroskey was selected
by Col Dennis Barron, wing
commander of the Civil Air Pa-
trol West Virginia Wing.
One thing I found in CAP is
that it is made up of a group of
dedicated volunteers that want
to provide an important service
and belong to something larger
than themselves, McCroskey
said. That dedication and com-
passion is what drives our mili-tary, police, fire fighters, teach-
ers, and other heroes in Amer-
ica.
Major McCroskey, a 20-year
veteran of the United States Air
Force, is no stranger to com-
mand and organization.
Most notably, he served as anAir Force ROTC instructor at
Kent State University. His pri-
mary additional duties included
commandant of cadets, unit
admissions officer and execu-
tive officer.
He instructed freshman-level
courses on national security
affairs and junior-level courses
and provided leadership train-
ing, military discipline, and edu-
cational and career guidance to
Air Force ROTC cadets. He is a
former member of the Civil Air
Patrol Canton Akron Senior
Squadron.
Shively returned the cadets to
the airport to await further or-
ders. Lt Col Eugene Thorn, di-
rector of emergency services of
CAPs West Virginia Wing, acti-
vated an official search and
rescue mission consisting of the
Bluefield, Beckley, and the
Charleston Cadet Squadrons.
The Bluefield unit started an
electronic air search in the area
with aircrew members of
Shively and Lt Melvin Chinault.

Mercer Squadron Civil Air Patrolwas flying cadets in the cadet
orientation program in the Ra-
leigh County area recently when
the plane detected an ELT,
(Emergency Locator Transmit-
ter) signal.
Pilot Lt George Shively reported
this by radio to the FAA. The
FAA reported the distress signal
to the USAF Aircraft Rescue
Coordination Center in Florida.
from Beckley under the com-
mand of Squadron Commander
Major David Chaney. Members
from the Charleston Cadet
Squadron joined them and pre-
pared for a ground search.
On the second flight out, flown
by Mercer Squadron Com-
mander Capt Steven Antolini,
and Chinault, it was determined
that the signal was likely com-
ing from the vicinity of the Fay-
ette County Airport near Fa-
yetteville, W.Va.
McCroskey appointed as Wheeling Commander
trieval.
They were also given plenty of
free time to visit the displays
and enjoy the air show. At the
end of the day, other than a
little sunburn and tired feet,
everyone said that theyd en-
joyed themselves and look for-
ward to next year.

Martinsburg Squadron PAO
On May 14, 2010, seven cadets
and one senior member from
the Martinsburg Composite
Squadron traveled to Andrews
Air Force Base to support and
participate in the 2010 JointServices Open House.
During the event, the unit per-
formed duties that included
drug demand reduction, recruit-
ing, Civil Air Patrol aircraft pro-
tection, streamer and flag re-

Mercer Squadron hears ELT Signal during cadet o-ride flight
The ground team from
Beckley was notified and the
team went to the airport to
search with ground elec-
tronic gear.
The ground team found the
aircraft at the airport at
7:30 p.m. It is believed that
the aircrafts owner had
accidentally activated the
ELT. The device was later
deactivated, and the team
was pleased that this wasnt
an actual crashed aircraft.

ceived the Prudential Spirit of
Community Awards Certificate
of Merit, The American Red

and is a cadet in CAP at Green-
brier Composite Squadron. Gal-
ford is a member of the groundteam search and rescue at the
unit, and wants to become a

activities like CAP, have molded
her into a fine role model for
her peers. According to
those who know her, it
is clear that Galford
shows signs of a natural
leader. Galford said she
wants to personally
take time to invite oth-ers to join her Monday
nights at 7 p.m. at the

port for a different ex-
perience.
