Welcome to our 2012-2013 Autumn / Winter programme for Crawley in which you’ll find anew and exciting range of adult education courses in your area.

This brochure contains courses taking place between August 2012 and January 2013 inclusiveand a further brochure will be delivered to you in January 2013 containing courses taking placefor the rest of the academic year.

Our local brochures have received some fantastic feedback from students and in response todemand you will notice the centre of this brochure contains weekend courses for the wholecounty.

Our exciting range of courses can help you to stay fit and healthy, keep your mind active, improveyour employment prospects, explore your creativity, learn a language or discover a hidden talent.

We’re looking towards a new future through operating in a new and innovative way and applying for charitable status.We’ve set up a student leadership group to ensure you are part of the decision making process for our new model. Thisgroup meets twice a year and there is also an e-group for people who would like to be involved virtually. We’re alwayskeen for people to join the group and for further information please email [email protected]

Despite decreasing government funding, we have kept price increases to a minimum while retaining our Fee Policystructure which we believe enables our courses to be affordable to all. For information on fees and financial supportplease see page 4.

What do the costs shown in the brochure include?The costs shown include tuition fees, exam entry fees and some additional costs. You will be expected toprovide books or materials where appropriate.

What will I be sent when I enrol?A course information sheet, a receipt, a Welcome Handbook and a map if requested will be sent to you whenyou enrol. The Welcome Handbook contains useful information and our terms and conditions, and is alsoavailable from any of our centres, on the website or further copies can be sent to you upon request.

How do I enrol on the website?Follow these 5 easy steps to enrol online:

Step 1. Go to: www.westsussex.gov.uk/adulteducation and click on ‘Search and book courses online’.

Step 2. Enter the course code or title in the ‘Quick Search’ box on the right and submit. For a wider searchclick on the blue tab marked ‘Course Search’ at the top right of the page. Put in some key words for thetitle of your course or use the list of course titles given in the drop down menu in the ‘subject’ box. Youcan also use the other options on this page to find out if a course is available in a particular location oron days and times of the week to suit you.

Step 3. ‘Login’ to enrol or register online then follow the easy steps.

Step 4. Once logged in follow the enrolment and payment instructions to enrol on your course.

Step 5. Your place is booked and you will receive a confirmation email.If you have any difficulties when using this facility please telephone the online enrolment help desk on01243 752815 for assistance.

What types of courses are there and what will I have to pay?Different types of courses are subsidised by government funding in various ways and by different amounts.

Personal & Community Development courses: for your enjoyment and development. If you are on a means tested benefit you will be entitled to a 70% discount on tuition fees on production ofproof of entitlement. If you are over 65 and not on a means tested benefit you will be entitled to a 10%discount on the tuition fees.Means tested benefits (subject to change due to the introduction of the Universal Credit) are currently –Jobseekers Allowance/ Council Tax Benefit/Housing Benefit/Pension Guarantee Credit/Income Support/WorkingTax Credit (if household income on the award notice is below £16000)/Employment + Support Allowance(work related activity group).

Community Plus courses: these courses are planned to meet the needs of particular groups and individualswithin the community and as they are subsidised at a higher rate fee levels are lower. There are no furtherdiscounts on these courses.

Learner Responsive courses (including ESOL): these courses are funded at a higher rate and lead to specificqualifications or work related skills.

Some groups of students are entitled to further concessions on Learner Responsive courses. Please ask onenrolment if you think any of these may apply to you.• Students will pay no tuition fees if they are on Jobseekers Allowance or on Employment & Support Allowance

(work related activity group) but may be required to pay some additional course costs. • Students aged 16-18yrs will not be required to pay tuition fees or exam costs but there may be additional

course costs on some courses. • Students who do not already have a full level 2 qualification (e.g. 5 GCSEs grade A*-C, an A level, an NVQ Level

2) may not be required to pay tuition fees on some Entry level and Level 1 courses. • Students aged 19-23yrs enrolling on their first full level 2 qualification, or their first full level 3 qualification may

not be required to pay tuition fees.• Students will pay no fees if they are on wider benefits (subject to review with the introduction of the Universal

Credit) where skills training will help them into work, but may be required to pay some additional course costs.

If you are over 65 and not on one of the benefits already mentioned you will be entitled to a 10% discount onthe tuition fees. Conditions of our funding mean that there are no discounts for students on other means-tested benefits on these courses. Learner Support funding may be available to help some students who may bediscouraged from joining a course for financial reasons. Please ask for details.

English and Maths: Most English and Maths courses (including GCSEs) are free to the student.

Do I have to pay all the fees at once?You will be expected to pay the full costs due but direct debit and instalment options are available. Please askfor details.

Can I get a refund? As many enrolments are made by phone, post or online our refund policy meets the requirements of theDistance Selling Regulations.• You have the right to cancel your enrolment within 7 working days of receiving confirmation, in which case a

full refund will be made. If the course starts within that 7 day period the right to cancel applies up to the daythe course starts. Cancellation requests must be made by email or letter to the local centre or [email protected] or West Sussex Adult & Community Learning Service, 2nd Floor EastWing North, County Hall, West Street, Chichester, PO19 1RF.

• Refunds can also be issued outside the 7 day period if a written request is received more than 4 weeks beforethe start of the course. An administrative charge of £7.50 will be deducted from the refund.

• After that time only requests for refunds as a result of your ill health, supported by a certificate from yourdoctor, will be considered. An administrative charge of £7.50 will be deducted from any refund.

• If a course is closed or cancelled refunds will be made with no administrative fee deducted. We are often ableto arrange a transfer to another suitable course.

What happens if there are changes to my course?Although courses usually run as advertised we reserve the right to alter or change courses as necessary. Ifoccasional sessions have to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control then alternative dates willbe arranged and no refunds will be granted. We also do not grant refunds on the grounds of a change of tutoror venue. If it becomes necessary to close or cancel your course, your fees will be refunded.

Will I be accepted on any course I choose?In some subjects we would need to assess which course is the most suitable for you so you would be advised ifyou need to come in for a pre-enrolment discussion. Students must be 16 years of age or over on the date the course starts.We do reserve the right not to accept an application for enrolment.

What do I do if I need extra support to access your courses?Talk to us about your needs when you enrol or at any stage during the course and we will do our best to help.
