LURNEA PUBLIC SCHOOL TERM 2 2011

Staffing for 2012 We are just in the final stages of organising classes and teachers for 2012. There are a few teachers who will definitely be leaving our school due to transfers and new opportunities. These include Miss McIntyre, Mrs Boyce and Mr and Mrs Chippindall. Thanks to each of these teachers for their hard work and commitment to the students of Lurnea Public School. We will also say a temporary farewell to Miss Archer who will be travelling for the first part of 2012. However, she will return to our school in Term 4. We wish her all the best for this exciting adventure. Finally, it is with great regret that I advise you that Julie Paterson, Assistant Principal will be leaving Lurnea Public School. After taking maternity leave and welcoming her second child, Julie decided to return home to the UK to provide essential support to some of her family. During her time in Australia, Julie became an Australian citizen and as such, is very much looking forward to returning to our country one day soon. Julie has made an outstanding contribution to our school over several years and her enthusiasm, energy, wisdom and support will be sorely missed. I’m sure you will join with me in wishing Julie well in all that she does. Lurnea will certainly miss that beautiful accent over the microphone each day. Advanced Notice As you are aware, there are many times throughout the year that we ask parents to pay for excursions and different school events. My staff and I are very conscious of the demand this places on families and the household budget. Therefore, we are going to trial a new payment system in 2012. At the beginning of Term 1, I will send home a payment request for a CURRICULUM CONTRIBUTION for each student. The contribution will cover the cost of 2 major excursions each year for all classes. It will also cover the cost of all in-school performances and in-school excursions. The contribution will also cover bus fares for whole school events. Parents and carers will have no other out of pocket expenses related to the school curriculum throughout the year. NOTE - The only exceptions to this contribution will be the additional costs for Stage 3 Camp, PSSA sport and swimming scheme. We are currently calculating the CURRICULUM CONTRIBUTION cost which will vary for students in K-2 and students in 3-6. I will let you know the contribution amount for your child ASAP. Thank You As always, I would like to thank my staff. I am so fortunate to lead a group of such talented and committed professionals. Our journey continues – I am glad to be along for the ride! I would also like to make special mention of the tireless work of our P&C. As I have said before, Lurnea Public School is so lucky to have a group of parents who are committed to supporting the teaching and learning at our school. I would particularly like to make mention of the P&C executive and volunteers who have worked so hard. Many thanks to Debbie Cunningham, Juleanne McKew, Craig McKew, Lyn Carlin, Jean Carter, Sandra

Dugdale and Margaret Ridding. Finally, I would like to thank Gwen Fox who will be stepping down as our Canteen Supervisor after a number of years of faithful service to our school. On behalf of the students and the staff, I thank Gwen for all her efforts and wish her well in the future.

Merry Christmas As we head into the summer holidays, our purpose at Lurnea Public School remains the same. Our job is to serve. Our responsibility is to ensure the very best possible outcomes for your children. We do not take this responsibility lightly. I am looking forward to spending some quality time with my children and family throughout the summer vacation – I hope you get the chance to do the same. Happy Holidays. David Sim Principal

LURNEA PUBLIC SCHOOL TERM 2 2011 TERM 4 2011

Taronga Zoo- Here we Come!

On November 17 our Kindergarten students attended Taronga Zoo. The student’s excitement was not dampened by the rainy weather as we left Lurnea on the bus. The children busied themselves with the song of the wheels on the bus and towards the end of the trip the students were getting excited and began asking the questions, “Are we there yet?” and “how much longer?” There were many highlights from the entertaining gorillas and the meerkats that developed a liking for cheezels. The students were ever so quiet upon our return as there was a noted silence after their big day out. What a great experience to link to our learning in class! Mrs Thorley

Stage 3 Dance Group- Lurnea High School Performance On Wednesday 30 November 2011, Stage 3 Dance Group and the Stage 3 Singing Group performed at Lurnea High School’s Creative Arts Festival. Our Dance Group performed their amazing Bollywood routine and the Singing group presented, “I’m Yours” for students and teachers from the high school, along with parents and other members of the community. The Dance Group wowed the audience with their three performances. After each routine they received a tremendous applause and there were also many cheers when they performed their dance and acrobatic movements. The Singing Group moved the audience with their perfect harmonies and also received standing ovations after each of their performances. Organisers of the event were so impressed with our students, that our school has been invited back next year to participate in their Creative Arts Festival. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the festival and thank you to Mrs Chippindall and Mrs Bussell for all their hard work and contributions towards these performances. A special thank you must go to Mrs Jean Carter for volunteering and assisting throughout the year with our performances. Mr Chippindall

LURNEA PUBLIC SCHOOL TERM 2 2011

KJ have been learning about Places We Know and recently visited Taronga Zoo. They have been studying zoo animals and created these wonderful giraffes during Visual Arts with Mrs Velardi.

KB has been learning how to write stories using their imagination. They were asked to think of three characters and give them names. They then had to decide where the story was set and what the problem in the story might be. After that the students read their stories in front of another person. Then they had a go at writing their creative stories. These are two of the amazing stories written by students in KB.

TERM 4 2011

In the Spotlight! Welcome to our new section of the newsletter where we will showcase the amazing talents of our students. See the interesting teaching and learning opportunities that exist for our students. We hope you enjoy!

Spike The Rainbow Painter By KT

We are so proud of the tremendous effort made by our students in KT during literacy sessions this term. Using the interactive whiteboard they have worked together as a group with guidance from their classroom teacher to produce a wonderful book titled Spike the Rainbow Painter. They each voted on the story content and contributed to writing the words to the story using the interactive whiteboard markers. The students sourced their graphics from within the Smart Notebook program and googled the internet to access other graphics.

Adam and the three smart boards One day there were three smart boards. There was a baby one called Luke, a mother called Nikki and a dad called George. They were talking to each other. Suddenly a robber took one. He took George off the wall with a knife. Nikki and Luke were screaming their heads off. Then Jackson heard the robber. He called the police and they came quick. Then Mohamed came and fixed George the smart board and put him back on the wall. After that Adam came and saw the smart boards. Then he did his work. By Adam

Santa Claus and the Chimney One dark night Santa Claus came down the chimney to give us presents. He bought the presents in a big white bag but it was too big and it got stuck in the chimney. His helper pulled Santa by the pants and out he fell onto the ground. Santa Claus left the presents near the Christmas tree and then he got stuck in the snow on his way back to the reindeer. Catalogue Poem By Lancai 6A

6A have been learning to write different types of poems. Lancai and Jack have written a catalogue poem describing the colour yellow. They worked cooperatively with each other, discussing their ideas about the images that come to their mind when they think about the colour yellow. They have done a great job with their poem.

Australian Artworks By Enic 6A

6A examined an artwork by Australian artist Sidney Nolan. They then used pastels and paper to recreate the artwork. Enic’s artwork of Ned Kelly on his horse shows the Australian landscape and Ned Kelly in his armour.

Library News Mrs Kiss is busy conducting a stocktake of the Library. All students are asked to please return any outstanding Library books to Mrs Kiss. Additionally, all Home Readers are to be returned to your child’s class teacher. Your assistance in ensuring that any outstanding books are returned to school is most appreciated. If your child is looking for a holiday activity, encourage them to read a new book!

Healthy lunchbox ideas We are all so busy in the lead up to Christmas, but it is still important to provide your child with healthy, nutritious and filling lunches and snacks at school. The School A to Z website has some great quick and easy lunchbox ideas. The site has printable recipes and food tips as well as allergy buster lunches for the most sensitive. And remember as the weather warms up, freeze a water bottle and place in the lunchbox (wrap in a cloth to keep food dry) to keep food at a safe temperature for consumption.
