and convenience, but without failing to show their way of thinking

summer catalog of the West Coast brand, which in July 2013 also

launches its first collection of men’s clothing, which dresses, together

with our shoes, the characters of this modern story.

Photographer Paulo Reis, who builds his history quietly shooting people who make or wear fashion for Brazilian websites and magazines, lives beyond the universe where designers and other fashion professionals dictate what Brazilians will wear and also beyond the hubbubs of the

characters of the first rows of the Sao Paulo Fashion Week. But it has not always been like this, behind the cameras. He has lived on the spotlight for

years working as a model, and the fact there is clearly related to DNA: he is the brother of former model and presenter Cássio Reis, beauty coming

from the crib. “But wherever I was, I always had a camera in hand, even not knowing that I would become a professional photographer”, he says, who in the travels when he was a model met photographers who encouraged him to bet on this profession. SPFW pits and covers for “Vogue” are in his

new curriculum. “I like the possibility to work with different people and realities, the lack of routine, to be able to create pictures and know places that I don’t know if I would know otherwise”, explains the passionate photographer, who soon wants to expose his ten years of work in the backstage of the fashion world. From

the source of photographers such as Swiss Raymond Meier comes the inspiration for his work. “He’s an artist with simple, though brilliant ideas! I also like the Spaniard Eugenio Recuenco, who has a more surreal style and stronger pictures. And finally, the Briton Tim Walker and his romantic and extravagant pictures”, continues Paulo, who loves the good light, whether natural or not, in his idols’ work. “Being at the right time and the right place

makes a perfect picture”. Like many of his generation, music and movies move ideas and, in his case, they make the stones roll. “I always shoot with music on. I like to work listening to AC/DC. A movie called “Sacred Fire” has

beautiful and delicate pictures. The book “The Mists of Avalon” is very visual and inspiring”. Finally, to give light to the young creator’s style and going

through the timeline, one just needs to imagine who Paulo Reis would like to shoot. “Bob Marley, Elvis Presley and Salvador Dali. They all had a lot of

style”. Paulo Reis is, therefore, the face of West Coast.

and the Brazilianness of the backcountryby Zeca Gutierres

He was born in São Paulo and for ten years he has been running the kitchen of his father’s restaurant, the Mocotó, which was born as “House of the North” (Casa do Norte), in 1973, and is located on the north side of São Paulo. Today, the space accumulates awards in the Brazilian media for the quality of its Northeastern dishes. José Oliveira de Almeida, the

father, was born in 1938, in Mulungu, a small village in the hinterland of Pernambuco, and arrived in São Paulo when he was 25 years old. Since the

farm life back then till today, there have been many decades and a lot of sweaty work. Rodrigo grew up between casseroles and original ideas that have gradually won people from all over Brazil, to the point of turning the

restaurant an international reference. “I’m a basic guy. On the day-to-day, rice, beans and meat is what makes me happy. When I cook at home, I have a weakness for Italian dishes and the

charcoal grill”, he says, who has a degree in Gastronomy and in the field cooks Northeastern dishes adapted to the palate of the great metropolis. His idols? “My list would have many names, but to exemplify I’ll stay with chef Alex Atala, who is the most Brazilian and most universal of all of us; the English chef Fergus Henderson, for his “nose-to-tail” philosophy; and the Korean chef David Chang, for showing that haute cuisine has many

faces”, says the chef, who, unlike our other characters, has no relationship with fashion, but even so calls the attention for his beauty. Ah, the

international Rodrigo is one of those who love listening to jazz while cooking and enjoying a good wine. What other references does he have?

“The film “Gonzaga de Pai para Filho”, the book “Momofuku” and the record “Da Lama ao Caos”, by Chico Science & Nação Zumbi”. Does one need to

say more? Yes, he was amused to wear cool clothes, see the backstage of the whole production and meet cool people in the production of the West

Coast catalog. “You can always invite me”.

PIMENTA BRANCA 1 PITADA

PREPARO

1. Mix the grated cheese and tapioca and add it to the hot milk, stirring constantly to keep

lumps from forming.

2. Add the spices and keep stirring until the mixture begins to get a firm consistency.

Fashion can be a finding, a clever move. For a successful model, then, it

can be a leap into the world of international travel, meeting interesting

people, high-pay career and parties. Leo Capote has surfed on this wave

for years. The year was 1999, and while in college, a friend of his, who

already was a model, invited him to join a test. It was immediate. His

beauty, tall and statuesque body fell like a glove on Brazilian brands. From

campaign to campaign, he has reached Milan, walked on the best catwalks

and starred Sisley, Benetton and Ecko campaigns. Down here he has

worn Blue Man and Cavalera clothing, besides other fashion shoots that

escape from his memory. But his fate was design indeed, as he explains:

“Design came before. I’ve always made objects, during and after being a

model”, he recalls, who participated in design competitions in 2007 and

was chosen as one of today’s top one hundred young designers by “&

Fork”, an English publication published by Phaidon. Is it little? Nah, Leo has

exhibited in prestigious Sao Paulo-based shop Firma Casa with furniture

items that roam between design and art. One of his pieces joins together

480 chemical nickel-finished carbon steel nuts – materials that, alongside

spoons, hammers and shower parts, he found in his family’s hardware

store. What is the source of Leo Capote, who has a degree in industrial

design? “All classical designers of the 40s and 50s are always

an inspiration for anyone who likes design”. Ah, Leo has assisted

to Fernando and Humberto Campana, and besides having in his work

some of the inventiveness of the Campana brothers, he became one of

their darlings. Well, it’s no wonder: his creations transform rustic items into

true utility works of art. He will change the world.

and the art of historyby Zeca Gutierres

The question is not whether art will change the world, but if it has the power to change a life. For Matheus Prestes, who was born in the state of

São Paulo, the answer is yes. He saw his life being invaded by art while living in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. “I became an actor by a succession of events. I joined a photography course at SENAC and on the first day of course I was told that I would need to have a professional camera. Without the money, I

was wondering what I would do. The answer came through my girlfriend at the time, who was taking a catwalk course. I migrated to stay closer to her. It was then that a theater director appeared and invited us to make a play based on Elis Regina’s songs. And so I did it...” begins the young man, who

also embraced the fashion world. “I was invited to take some pictures in Sao Paulo and once again life blew me a way. I joined a modeling agency. Two months later and nothing happened. I left there and went to another one, L’équipe, which is now my parent agency. I took an advertising job and got excited with the pay. Then I got some parades in the Phytoervas Fashion show, which preceded the SPFW. After this phase, I could not get any jobs and then I worked as a waiter for living. I decided to enter an acting school,

the Nilton Travesso School. I studied for two years and a half and I left there with my professional actor license. I took a beer ad job that put me in the

advertising gear. I studied film and TV, made short films, participated in soap operas in the SBT and Record channels and miniseries in Globo TV. In Rio, I

debuted a play with Cia Nova de Teatro. In SP, in early 2012, I went for acting. I did a workshop with Lulu Pavarin, which became a play. I staged another play

directed by Germano Melo and written by Zen Salles. I played a feature film last year and another one this year. I present a show on HBO”, he continues,

PEGUEI UM TRABALHO DE CERVEJA QUE ME COLOCOU NA ENGRENAGEM DA PUBLICIDADE. ESTUDEI CINEMA E TV, FIZ CURTAS METRAGENS, PARTICIPEI DE NOVELAS NO SBT E RECORD E MINISSÉRIE NA GLOBO. NO RIO ESTREEI UMA PEÇA COM A CIA NOVA DE TEATRO. EM SP, NO COMEÇO DE 2012, FUI ATRÁS DO TEATRO. FIZ OFICINA COM LULU PAVARIN QUE VIROU PEÇA. ENCENEI OUTRA COM DIREÇÃO DE GERMANO MELO E TEXTO DE ZEN SALLES. RODEI UM LONGA NO ANO PASSADO E OUTRO NESTE ANO. APRESENTO UM PROGRAMA NA HBO”, SEGUE, TODO EMPOLGADO. Cesar Fassina

Cesar Fassina is a fashion editor and

consultant. Born in Porto Alegre, he

started working with ballet and theater

costumes in 1984. In 1991, he moved

to São Paulo and since then has worked

as a stylist in fashion photo shoots for

fashion magazines in Brazil and abroad

– Visionaire and Dazed&Confused were

some of the collaborations abroad. In the

catwalks, he was ahead of brands such as

Walter Rodrigues, Cia Marítima, Ellus, Lino

Villaventura, Cavalera, Daslu, Lacoste, C&A,

Renner, Adidas and other.

Yossi Michaeli

Yossi Michaeli was born and raised in

Israel. With 20-somethings, he decided to

travel the world and fell in love with Brazil

and photography. He dropped out of the

computing school in college and devoted

himself to photography. He worked as an

assistant in Luis Garrido’s studio, in Rio

de Janeiro, and did the Abril Course, in

São Paulo. Then he moved to New York

and currently lives in the city, but while

splitting time with Sao Paulo. Lately, he

photographed six consecutive editorials

for “Vogue” Taiwan and also editorials for

“Vogue” and “Elle” Mexico, “GQ”, etc.
