for Mike, as an unexpected challenge had arose. His morphine pump was rejecting! Surgery after surgery followed during the summer of 2015. This turn of events assigned his eldest daughter, University of San Francisco alumni Michelle Rizzio, with the majority of responsibilities regarding Cultivation Hydroponic Shoppe’s grand opening, planning of monthly community events, and day to day operations. The first few months of business were challenging as the family balanced their patriarchs’ healing with the unbelievable interest their new business begun attracting. Two short months after opening Cultivation Hydroponic Shoppe, Mike Rizzio went in for his final surgery to have his morphine pump removed. His surgery was successful.
After a brief post-op healing period, Cultivation Hydroponic Shoppe’s founder Mike Rizzio began the New Year of 2016 by spending his mornings Monday through Saturday at Cultivation Hydroponic Shoppe from 10am to 1pm. Spending time with the community and educating them on the wonders of his newfound plant based lifestyle has earned him plenty of accolades from the local growing community of both cannabis and food farmers. With a solid six months of time regularly spent at Cultivation Hydroponic Shoppe, Mike Rizzio along with his daughters have created a dynamic team dedicated to educating and inspiring self-sustainability through at home indoor and outdoor food and medicine gardening. ADAM SANCHEZ“THE PEOPLES MAYOR”
Two years ago, Mayor Adam Sanchez inherited a $6 million budget deficit that left the City on the verge of municipal bankruptcy. After a restructuring of the City budget using conservative accounting principles with a downsizing of staff job positions, pay reductions, negotiating new business contracts and streamlining City expenses, Mayor Sanchez was able to save the City from bankruptcy.
On November 4th, 2014, 73 percent of Desert Hot Springs voters approved California’s first local city cannabis ordinances 552-553 to authorize commercial cultivation. This lured entrepreneurs to over 1.7 million square feet of approved industrial cultivation creating over 30 million dollars in future City revenue and a new boom in construction for the City.
City voters demonstrated they were behind Mayor Sanchez efforts to create a new economic development funding stream for city services such as paved streets, sidewalks, street lighting, parks, youth education programs and public safety through cultivation.
In 2014 Mayor Sanchez established the Desert Hot Springs Healthy City Initiative to educate residents on the benefits of improving their overall health through exercise, eating healthy, health check-ups, and having
compassion for medicinal cannabis products that prevent illnesses and diseases. Mayor Sanchez informed the community how medicinal cannabis promoted health & wellness by helping patients with pain, depression, cancer, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, HIV, PTSD veterans, and seizure plagued children. On October 9, 2015, California Governor Jerry Brown signed the first ever regulations that established the State Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation that regulates state licenses for commercial growers of medical cannabis. Today, with Mayor Sanchez bold leadership, the City has over thirty applications for cultivation projects being submitted and fourteen approved for commercial cultivation. Mayor Sanchez vision to create a green economic development plan to keep the City of Desert Hot Springs forever out of bankruptcy was achieved.
“Desert Hot Springs is the leader in cultivation regulation in California” said Mayor Adam Sanchez. The City is considered a model by jurisdictions contemplating their own commercial regulations.
Pastor Talib McMicheaux of the First Community Baptist Church in Desert Hot Springs coined Mayor Sanchez “The Peoples Mayor” for his efforts in uniting the City through outreach events and for promoting the health & wellness and safety of all residents. 0

FERNANDO GUERRERO A LIFE OF A MATADOR CHAMPION
HERE SOUTH OF THE BORDER
If stories were diamonds or gold the richest gem in the valley would be South of the Border in Desert Hot Springs. The combination of brick and stucco give the building an old world feel but is as cozy and inviting as your grandmother’s house. This building holds history from being the old city hall of Desert Hot Springs to the man whose life fills its walls today.
Fernando Guerrero is an unassuming man who meets his customers with a huge smile and handshake. Visiting his establishment is like visiting an old friend and before you leave you will be one.Behind his smile exudes an old world toughness rarely seen in today’s culture. You wouldn’t know it unless you knew his story but he is an embodiment of both old Spanish ceremony and display and American perseverance and gumption. His walls are adorned by his accomplishments from years gone by. They are pictures and paintings of him still a young man. Pictures of him, a Matador.Being a bullfighter came naturally to him. “It comes from the family. Because my grandfather and my father, and my cousin Antonio, they were all important in bull fighting.”It opened him to the world. “I started Ecquador. But at that time many years ago, Ecquador there were not too many bullfights. So I moved to Mexico and from Mexico I moved to Spain.” Fernando has seen much of the world and stared death down in the face of a 1,000 pound foe.
“Well it’s all together you are afraid and sometimes you have nightmares. And you go to sleep dreaming the bulls are going to come. But once you are in the bull ring you forget about everything. It’s you and the bull and that’s it.” The lessons he learned from the bull he has applied to his life. “You have to concentrate 100% because if you make a little mistake you are in trouble.” In the bull ring just as in business even the slightest mistake can spell disaster. Local athletes can serve to learn a good deal from an old Matador. To them he recommends to fight and not give up. He says to them “Not to give up on their dreams. It’s not easy but be persistent. It’s a profession that takes a lot of discipline so you have to give up a lot of things when you’re in the profession but it pays off.”He applies this philosophy to his business. Heidi Moore of Moreno Valley had just finished her meal when she told me “The best food comes from the little places. This had such good service that this is our 2nd time here in a week”
Jamie Carlson was with Don and Wendy Williamson, all of Alberta Canada, when she told me Fernando has “The best margaritas and guacamole.” I asked if they had tried Fernando’s signature Cadillac Margirita and Don said they had and added “We didn’t have a chauffer so unfortunately we could only have one.” The couple makes the restaurant a stop on their travels every year.
Even locals Bob and Phyllis Lee can’t get enough. “We’ve been coming here for 12-13 years it’s like a family.” Phyllis says. What does Fernando recommend? “Everything on the menu is excellent. We are very famous for our tamales. Our tamales are something special. We make it from baby corn. Stuffed with cheese and peppers. It’s very light and very mild. Of course my favorite drink the Cadillac margarita.”

There are many places to stay in the area , HOWEVER , if you look for quite , relaxing , pet friendly place - look no more ! Blue horizon is your place to stay . Price is very competitive and reasonable for what you get .Thanks again , Jack & Yasmine
I cannot say enough good things about our stay, and the owner, Sharon. I mentioned it was our one year anniversary and she had a surprise for my wife in our family room: A nice set of flowers with a card that said 'happy anniversary', along with rose petals that were set up near the entrance of our bedroom and it led to a huge heart on the bed. Sharon gave us a lot of suggestions on what to do, was very informative, and even gave us an anniversary gift card as well. I have never had a hotel or cabin owner ever go above and beyond like she did, and I have no doubt that we will stay here next time we are in Big Bear. Prices are reasonable, and the cottage we stayed in (#3) was clean, and had a very homey feel to it. Plus, the location is great (within a mile from the village). There are a lot of other amenities we never used that were outdoors, but it's a spot we can take our family and our little nephews maybe next summer. If you are looking for a quiet place that is clean, cozy, and comfortable, look no further than here. Plus, the owner being so awesome was icing on the cake. Doug P. Huntington Beach, CA
