Program Highlights
Agriculture & Natural Resources Through continued education efforts such as on farm result demonstrations, grower meetings, and news articles, producers are provided with information on varieties and Best Management Practices. Growers were able to incorporate these practices into their operation to help increase profitability. In addition, through pesticide recertification residents and producers are educated in worker protection standards, spray control, and proper planning of chemical applications.
4-H Youth Development West Baton Rouge 4-H teaches science based
lessons through experiential learning techniques. West Baton Rouge 4-H has 4 project clubs that emphasize different subject areas included in the 4-H curriculum. Our project clubs include Clothing and Textiles, SET (Science, Engineering, and Tech-nology), Shooting Sports (Archery and Shotgun), and Live-stock. The project clubs allow participants to gain first-hand experience with the project that will allow them to apply that knowledge later in life. Camping experiences and school gar-dens are popular learning activities for 4-H Youth also. West Baton Rouge 4-H is also focused on providing service
in our community. Each year West Baton Rouge 4-H holds a “Holiday Canned Food Drive” which collects canned goods throughout the parish to donate to the local Food Bank. Oth-er service projects are Christmas Stockings for needy children and helping with Foster Care children needs. The 4-H motto is “Learn by Doing”, and we try to follow that motto in all our West Baton Rouge 4-H programming.
Family, Nutrition and Health Our Nutrition Programs offer many resources to assist residents in making better healthier choices for their families. Classes teach individuals how to select foods that meet their nutritional needs, be-come more physically active, fix healthful low-cost meals, stretch food dollars, and handle and store food so that it will not spoil and last longer. The Healthy Community Initiative in West Baton Rouge Parish is designed to improve the nutrition and health of the SNAP-Ed eligible community members using a model that may be replicated across the state. The community development project will promote broad programs in health and nutrition education and physical activity opportunities in the parish.
