WEST AUSTRALIAN PETROLEUM LTD West Australian Petroleum Ltd, commonly known by its acronym WAPET, was established in 1952 as a result of a working partnership formed between Caltex and Ampol for the use of Exploration Permits for oil and gas in Western Australia. Later this joint venture operation was to include Texaco, Shell and Chevron amongst other companies participating in oil and gas exploration, production and development projects in Western Australia. Since the 1900s exploration for oil and gas in Western Australia had been carried out intermittently by various Australian and international oil and gas companies. The formation of WAPET brought these separate efforts together in one mutually beneficial company. Interestingly, some of the papers in this collection relate to the exploration and business activities of Oil and Gas Companies in Australia from the 1930s onwards, before WAPET was formed. WAPET’s activities ranged from the discovery, in 1953, of the first “flowing oil in Australia” at Rough Range in the Exmouth Gulf to the later development of Barrow Island, neighbouring north-west oil and gas fields and onshore gas reserves. WAPET ceased activities in 1999 when the company was taken over by Chevron.
