Western States CAT HoldsFirst Rodeo ChampionshipThe inaugural Western States Rodeo championship was held Aug. 27 near

the College of Western Idaho campus in Nampa. More than 250 specta-tors watched Stephen Bauman, project manager of Pipe of Washington

Inc. win the event. The championship event was the conclusion of a heavy equipment rodeo tour

held throughout the summer at 12 locations across Idaho, Montana, Oregon andWashington where Western States CAT has a local branch location. The rodeoseries kicked off in late May and featured a total of 767 competitors with 3,500spectators watching the events.

The championship win earned Bauman a 2011 Ford F-250 pickup truck grandprize and the title of best heavy equipment operator in the territories WesternStates serves. He also won a Cat 226B3 skid steer for his sponsoring company,Pipe of Washington Inc.

During the championship 12 finalists competed for the grand prize in skill-focused contests using a variety of equipment, each with a new twist or substan-tial change from the regional events to provide additional challenges. A fifthmystery round was not unveiled until the final event which ultimately deter-mined Bauman as the winner, when he overcame a considerable margin held bythen front-runner Tyler Crofts of McAlvain Construction.

Finalists were split into groups on random draws for the first four events, which included a Cat 420 backhoe tire-stacking event with more tires, a morecomplex Cat 299 CLT (compact track loader) obstacle course and Cat 320 exca-vator and Cat 950 wheel loader challenges with larger equipment and additionalelements that involved engaging and disengaging buckets and other fork attach-ments.

As part of its commitment to giving back to the communities where itsemployees live and serve customers, Western States CAT has donated more than$7,000 to local charities at every rodeo location throughout the series. Cat, Ford,Carhartt and DeWalt were among the more than twenty industry sponsors thathave provided prizes to participants and event attendees.

MB Crusher Bucket Celebrates 10Years of Innovation in ConstructionIt has been 10 years since MB made the crusher

bucket available to the earth movement world. Thecrusher bucket works by taking advantage of the exca-vator system and can be used in many fields of appli-cation.Today, MB’s crusher bucket has crossed all borders,

from the Far East (the company recently opened abranch in Japan) to the “Stars & Stripes” States (whereanother branch was opened) all the way to SouthAmerica and Oceania, and did not stop even whenfaced with the cold stones of Siberia or the burning hotones of Nigeria.Of all the various fields of applications, the MB

crusher bucket is especially useful during excavationand filling jobs, according to the manufacturer. Usually, during excavations and the jobs that follow,

the soil must be dug up, the debris material loaded ontotrucks and taken to the nearest dump for disposal, withthe trucks then returning to the work site and so on. Theexcavation site must then be filled in again, thus requir-ing other trips to the waste dump, but this time to pur-chase the same material that was dumped just a fewdays before, which in the meantime has been crushedand prepared in the right size to fill in the trenches.

Obviously, the material must be paid for and hauledto the work site. Using an MB crusher bucket reduces costs and

times needed for the disposal and procurement process,up to fully eliminating them.In fact, the material is already at the work site, where

it can be reused after having gone through demolitionprocesses using pneumatic hammers and pliers.Subsequently, with the MB crusher bucket the materi-al is collected and crushed in the desired diameter andunloaded directly by the bucket onto the truck or inanother location, and can thus be used again, for exam-ple, to build yards, road embankments, drainage worksand to fill in various excavations. The MB crusher bucket is especially useful for lay-

ing special piping in difficult soil, according to themanufacturer. The crusher bucket is easy to transport, has low

maintenance costs, does not require an additional oper-ator other than the one who operates the excavator andsaves fuel that would have been used up by a mobilecrusher, which would in any event be powered by anexcavator. For more information, visit www.mbcrusher.com.

AGC Plans to Launch New FallProtection Training Program

The Associated General Contractors ofAmerica will launch a new fall protectionsafety training program next year due to anew federal safety grant the association isbeing awarded. The association will use the$130,000 Susan Hardwood Training Grantfrom the U.S. Department of Labor to tack-le one of the most pressing safety issues inconstruction, officials said.

“The new training program will help uscontinue to make construction safer for mil-lions of workers,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer.“This is another sign of the commitment ourassociation and our members have toimproving construction safety.”

Sandherr said that while the overall num-ber of construction fatalities has declined bynearly 50 percent over the past five years,fall-related fatalities remain the singlelargest cause of construction deaths,Sandherr said. He noted that fatalities fromfalls accounted for 260 out of the 751 con-

struction fatalities reported in 2010, or near-ly 35 percent of the total.

The association head noted that the safe-ty program would provide comprehensiveinformation about fall protection for bothcommercial and residential construction. Headded that the association would offer thesafety program in eight different sites during2012 and expected to instruct as many as500 construction workers during the year.

Sandherr added that, in addition to thenew fall protection program, the associationalready offers a host of safety programs andmaterials that construction firms are takingadvantage of. These include in-seat safetytraining programs and making educationalmaterials available to construction firms.

“Any chance we get to improve safety forconstruction workers we are going to take,”Sandherr said. “After all, the constructionindustry is only as strong as its workers aresafe.”

Construction Materials PricesFlatten as Activity Begins to Slowdown 0.7 percent in September but up 14.8percent over 12 months; steel mill products, which slipped 0.6 percent for the month butrose 13.5 percent for the year; and aluminummill shapes, down 1.8 percent for the monthbut up 10.4 percent from a year earlier.

“These prices can spike anytime there is aglobal supply disruption or a consensus thatdemand is strengthening worldwide, not justfrom U.S. construction,” Simonsonexplained. “In contrast, materials producedhere and used only by U.S. constructionhave shown little price movement.”

He cited, as examples, the producer priceindexes for concrete products, up 0.2 percentin September and 0.3 percent over 12months; lumber and plywood, down 1.3 per-cent for the month and 0.4 percent for theyear; and gypsum products such as wall-board, down 1.7 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively.

Simonson observed that the price indexfor new construction — what contractorscharge for construction projects — rose 2.2percent over 12 months for industrial build-

ings, 2.6 percent for offices, 2.8 percent forwarehouses and 3.0 percent for schools.

“In light of the much steeper materialscost increases, these gains are not enough tokeep contractors solvent,” he warned.

Association officials said that in additionto the cost squeeze, the construction industrywas suffering from decreasing demand forpublic sector construction activity. They saidthat while state and local construction budg-ets will continue to contract for the foresee-able future, Washington could help offsetsome of the decline by enacting legislation tomake needed, long-term, investments inhighways, transit systems, clean water sys-tems, airports and runways.

“Given the stagnant construction bidprices, taxpayers stand to benefit ifWashington acts quickly to enact new infra-structure investments,” said Stephen E.Sandherr. “Even if construction pricesrebound in the near future, it is still a lot lessexpensive to maintain infrastructure while itis operating than to fix it once it breaks.”

Terex Unveils Fuel-Efficient Generation 9 Truck Range

Engineered for the toughest applicationsaround the world, the new Generation 9range of Terex articulated trucks are pow-ered by Scania engines, which are renownedfor high uptime and reliability, underpinnedby a worldwide service network. Back-to-back testing with the new Generation 9 TierIVi TA300 and the previous model (Tier IIITA300) demonstrates that the new range isnot only more productive but also more fuelefficient, according to the manufacturer.Dedicated to reducing downtime, the

service points on Terex articulated trucks aredesigned for quick and easy access. Theelectronic-assisted hood raise and the fullytilting cab simplify access to major compo-nents and ground level service points, whichfurther reduces downtime. As well as reduced downtime, lower cost

of ownership is a key feature of Terex artichaulers. All models in the Generation 9range benefit from oil-cooled multiple-discbrakes on each axle providing extendedbrake component life, reducing service inter-vals and operating costs, and improvingoverall braking performance compared to

traditional dry-disc brake systems that arefitted as standard on other manufacturers’trucks. The Terex cab is developed around the

operator to improve comfort, efficiency andproductivity. The new ergonomic cab hasreduced interior noise levels, more effectiveair conditioning, a high-quality sound sys-tem and even a new steering wheel and mir-ror arrangement. Interior aesthetics alsohave been updated to anthracite grey with amatte finish to reduce glare. The smallest truck in the range boasts a

hauling capacity of 20.3 cu. yd. (15.5 cu m)and is powered by a 311 hp (232 kW)engine, making the Gen 9 TA250 the perfectpartner for any construction project in the25-ton (22.6 t) class market, according to themanufacturer. With a 370 hp (276 kW) engine, the Gen

9 TA300 is one of the most powerful trucksin the 30-ton (27 t) class market and thispower is combined with a heaped capacityof 22.9 cu. yd. (17.5 cu m). Another featureof the updated TA300 is the fully independ-ent front suspension, which is fitted as stan-

dard. This design, which also is available asan option on the Gen 9 TA250, greatlyreduces operator fatigue and increasesmachine stability, enabling these machinesto excel in rough terrain environments.Completing the Terex range of Gen 9

articulated trucks is the powerful TA400which has a maximum payload of 40 tons(36 t) and a heaped capacity of 30.3 cu. yds.(23.3 cu m). It has a gross power of 444 hp(331 kW), and with six forward gears andone reverse in addition to a two speed dropbox, the Gen 9 TA400 can travel up to 37.3mph (60 kmh).At home on sites ranging from sand and

gravel quarries to coal mines and road con-struction projects, the new Gen 9 Terex artic-ulated trucks are designed to keep productiv-ity levels high, fuel consumption low andcycle times short. For more information, visit

Case 327B, 330B Artic Trucks Feature More HorsepowerThe Case 327B and 330B articulated

trucks feature more horsepower, anergonomically designed cab and a variety ofservice and maintenance features. They alsofeature the same technology as the rest ofthe Case 300 Series ADT line, such as anintegrated differential, variable geometryturbocharger, auto warm-up system and self-diagnosed fluid-level checks. The certified, electronically controlled

Case 10-L engines provide greater perform-ance, efficiency and reduced emissions. Thefour-stroke, turbocharged, air-to-air cooleddiesel engines utilize unit injectors thatincrease the pressure of fuel entering eachcylinder, above and beyond the pressurecoming off the common rail. The enginesalso feature a variable geometry turbocharg-er that provides an optimized air-to-fuel mix-ture for peak performance to move morematerial per hour, according to the manufac-turer.The fully adjustable, ergonomically

designed operator environment providesexcellent comfort and visibility for increasedproductivity. Machine operation is madeeasy with a choice of automatic or manualmodes.Mounted directly under the center of the

cab, the front driveline is equipped with afront suspension system to absorb shocksfrom rough terrain and provide a more com-

fortable ride. In addition to the long, sloping hood

design that offers enhanced forward visibili-ty, the 327B and 330B also feature a floor-to-ceiling glass cab door, providing more visi-bility to the side. The upper window in thenew glass door opens for ventilation whilecontrolling dust entry into the cab.Along with swing-out fenders and flip-

forward hood, the Case 327B and 330Barticulated trucks offer a tilt cab that givesservice technicians accessibility to the drive-lines, transmission, hydraulic valves andlines, so preventative maintenance checksare completed with minimal effort.Maintenance checks are performed at

ground level, with fluid sight glasses andaccess panels mounted on the hood. An auto-matic lubrication system continuously greas-es all lubrication points from a central distri-bution block. The 327B and 330B models retain the

wide frame and low dump body. The widerbottom of the bed provides a lower center ofgravity and increased stability. This designprovides room for the dump cylinders to behoused inside the frame, which protectsthem from the elements better than cylindersmounted outside the frame, according to themanufacturer..For more information, visit
