A Father’s DevotionPatrick Morley, in his book The Man in
the Mirror, tells a heart-wrenching storyabout a father’s love for his son. Afterspending the day salmon fishing in a se-cluded Alaskan bay, three men and atwelve-year-old boy got in a small sea-plane to head home. Apparently one of theskis of the plane had been punctured andhad filled with water, causing the plane tocrash shortly after takeoff. All four peoplesurvived the crash. After praying together, they abandoned the sinking plane and be-
gan to swim toward shore, fighting thecold waters and vicious riptide as theywent. Two of the men, strong swimmers, reached the shore exhausted. The thirdman, the father of the twelve-year-oldboy, saw that his son was unable to swimagainst the strong current. He swam backto his son.
The father tried desperately to save hisson, but he couldn’t pull his own weightand the boy’s as well. Unable to pull hisson to safety but unwilling to leave him, hecradled him in his arms as they were bothswept out to sea. The father could havemade it to shore by himself, but he lovedhis son too much to let him die alone.
That’s the kind of love and devotionour heavenly Father has for us. But thegreat news is that He didn’t just die withus—He died for us. He died so that wecould live. The Bible says: “God demon-strates his own love for us in this: Whilewe were still sinners, Christ died for us”(Romans 5:8); “Greater love has no onethan this, that he lay down his life for hisfriends” (John 15:13).

COME ENJOY FAMILY CAMP!As I write this it has been several months since family camp of 2006. I still remember many of the great
sermons and the wonderful music that we enjoyed.
Pastors and lay people alike, why don’t you come and experience the presence of God as we have camp
meeting again this year? Come and participate. Come ready to pray, give, and worship.
You are invited, friend, to come as our guest.
You should benefit in many ways, but most of all, I pray you have an encounter with the living God. After all
camp meeting is a wonderful time for families to seek HIM!
Thankful for YOU,
Dr. Mark S. F. Eckart, District Superintendent
