Wonderful Happenings at Wenty!

Hot off the press news! Wentworthville Public School has been named in a NSW Government

announcement earlier in the week as part of its ongoing investment in schools. We have been named

as part of the allocation for school upgrades.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the Department of Education said in the announcement:

“The 120 new and upgraded schools will create 32,000 more student places and 1500 new classrooms

across NSW. The school building announcement, which launches the School Infrastructure NSW

program, is more than an investment of money; it is an investment in the future education and learning

outcomes for children and young people in NSW.

School Infrastructure NSW builds on a new way of thinking about the physical design of schools – how

they influence student learning styles, promote collaborative learning and make the best use of

technology – and a planned, transparent and collaborative approach to meeting the State’s rapidly

increasing population growth and subsequent enrolment pressures on our schools.”

What this will actually look like will emerge over time. I will keep the school community informed as I

know more.

Donations of flags from Wentworthville Public School families

As part of Wentworthville celebrating our cultural diversity as a school I invite

families to donate a flag for flying at the school which represents your family

heritage. The school will randomly choose a different country flag to fly each

week next to the Australian and Aboriginal flags. We will have student leaders

put flags of a variety of countries up and down each week.

We will have a list of countries published in our newsletter each fortnight, so you can see what countries are

already represented. This will assist the school in ensuring we do not have five of the same flag!

If you would like to participate, we welcome your flag donation to the school. Some requirements are outlined

below to ensure the process runs smoothly:

Please ensure you contact the school office on 9631 8529 to check if the country you are considering

has not already had a flag purchased for the school.

Please note the following desirable dimensions for a flag that is durable for external

flying.

Flag Length – min 80cm – max 100cm (1 metre)

Flag Width – min 170cm – max 200cm (2 metres)

Thank you for being part of our school’s wonderful cultural diversity!

Semester One Reports – Attendance data

We have experienced a number of Departmental

technical glitches with the new electronic online

attendance marking system we embarked upon this

year. As we are still in consultation with the

Department in resolving these matters we will be

unable to report attendance with an actual numerical

figure in the Semester One reports.

Our aim is to report the whole year’s absences in the Semester Two report to parents at the end of the year

when the issues will be resolved. Teachers who are concerned about student attendance will make a

comment in the comment section of the report to you.

There will be a section on Semester One reports that says:

Attendance

Days absent from 30.1.17 -16.6.17 (There will be no numerical figure after this wording)

Recently updated policies

Wentworthville Public School - Mobile Device Policy

Rationale

All students should be able to come to school feeling safe and secure. Mobile phones / electronic devices

have become an important and invaluable part of our modern lifestyle. The school understands there are

times when possession of a mobile phone / electronic device can provide a sense of safety and security

while travelling to and from school, enabling urgent calls or contact for parents. In the Primary school

setting if it was required that emergency calls be made, the school teaching staff or office staff would make

those phone calls. The use of mobile phones / electronic devices, by students, in school requires

clarification. There are concerns about the use of SMS, photos etc to bully students.

This policy is to be read in conjunction with Legal Issues Bulletin No 35 (revised March 2013).

Purpose

To ensure that mobile phone / electronic device usage does not disrupt the school’s learning environment

and wellbeing of the whole school community.

To clarify the responsibilities of students and the acceptable mobile phone / electronic device usage and

possible consequences of breaches.

Implementation

In general, students should not bring valuable items to school. These items can be easily lost or stolen. A

device that is approved under the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program in the school is sanctioned by

the Principal. If a mobile phone / electronic device is required for reasons of specific safety or urgency

before or after school, then the child will store the mobile phone / electronic device in their own school bag

and have the device switched off fully (not on silent). The phone / electronic device will be switched off

between the school hours of 8.25am – 2.55pm and remain stored in the student’s bag all day. No phone /

electronic device is to be removed from the bag or utilised throughout the school day by students. The only

exception to this is for the approved BYOD program.

It also needs to be noted that:

Students bring mobile phones / electronic devices to school at their own risk and the school will not accept

responsibility for damage or theft.

No mobile phones are to be taken on excursions unless the Principal has approved it.

Any student found using a mobile phone / electronic device in an inappropriate manner (bullying,

harassing, intimidating) will have the phone / electronic device confiscated. Parents will be notified and

requested to collect phone / electronic device from school.

Departmental procedures will be followed in regard to inappropriate breaches of the behaviour code and

further action may need to occur. Depending on the circumstances, action can include banning the

students from using mobile phones / electronic devices or confiscating phones / electronic devices from

individual students.

Evaluation

The existing policy was reviewed in 2017 and will be reviewed again in 2020 or earlier if there is any

change to use of this type of technology.

Last week 19 parents attended our Parent Mentors information session and

afternoon tea. These parents will be supporting new families enrolling at

Wentworthville PS.

In coming weeks you will see Parent Mentors wearing bright yellow badges during the morning assembly

and they will be available to answer questions and assist families at our school. Feel free to say hello and

introduce yourself to our parent mentors.

A New Families Welcome Afternoon Tea will be held on 17th August at 2pm. Stay tuned for further

information

On Thursday 3rd August 2017, Wentworthville PS will be holding the annual school

Athletics Carnival at Pendle Hill High School. The cost of the carnival is $4. Students will

be travelling by bus to and from PHHS.

Students will be leaving from the school at 9am. All students will

need to be at school by 8:55am to ensure class rolls are marked

before travelling by bus to Pendle Hill HS. The carnival is an all-day event for K-6

students.

The P&C will be running a canteen for students to purchase snack food only. It is

important that all students bring their own lunch and water on the day.

Students are to wear running shoes/sneakers. Metal spikes are not permitted. House colours should be

worn. Students will need; a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water and healthy food.

The Carnival will be run by school staff with assistance from Sports in School Australia staff and high

school volunteers.

If you have any questions regarding the athletics carnival, please see

Great news for the Uniform Shop - EFTPOS is up and running

and has been making a difference for parents. Adding to the

convenience that we love!

Plans are coming together for our next upcoming event, a BBQ lunch

with drinks for Open Day! Sausage sandwiches will be available on a pre-order and pre-pay

basis to allow for catering purposes. Keep your eye out for the notes coming home next

term.

The P&C Committee meet the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm. Feel free to come and
