not only is this issue our love letter to DIY PROJECTS, crafts & ideas, it’s also an invitation to you, our readers, to embrace diy as an integral part of what will make your wedding amazing. whether i’m venturing down country roads on the hunt for antique shops or scouring local junkyards for LONG-FORGOTTEN TREASURES, i never stop thinking about how to create something new out of something classic. this enduring love for HOMESPUN DETAILS & the reinterpretation of what’s old has helped wellwed — cape cod, nantucket & martha’s vineyard, sister wellwed magazines & vermont vows to evolve into the publications that they are today.

VINTAGE OBJECTS have a story to tell — they invite you to learn about their history & rediscover their beauty, while adding a new chapter of your own. our “start your engines” wedding gowns & accessories photoshoot (page 97) is a celebration of this pairing of old & new, with exquisite modern bridal couture alongside vintage automobiles. my love for everything vintage is rooted in the belief that combining old & new can evoke a sense of timelessness — much like TRUE LOVE. just as vintage cars & classic gowns never go out of style, this type of love never fades; it ages gracefully & adapts with time until, eventually, everything old is new again.

here at wellwed, we have created a sanctuary for CRAFTING & CREATING. overlooking a river that once powered the historic mills of winooski, vermont, our offi ce has become a place of CREATIVE ENERGY, where simple ideas are translated into something special. whether we’re shooting an innovative tabletop design or crafting a homemade cake topper, our offi ce has become a place of refuge where i can escape the hustle & bustle of everyday life to create one-of-a-kind items. our creative retreat is something we encourage brides to make for themselves. a sanctuary, no matter how small, where you can put your energy into special diy projects is the perfect way to ensure your wedding is a physical expression of your EXTRAORDINARY LOVE.

this spring & summer, as the warm rays of the sun break through lush trees & birdsong awakens the world from its winter slumber, brides-to-be can ring in the new season with a fresh yet TIMELESS love, a love that echoes the sweet marriages of our grandparents, that only gets more valuable with time & that ultimately becomes an HEIRLOOM so priceless, you wouldn’t trade it for anything.

desiree’s advice: as you go about the wedding planning process, never lose sight or compromise your wedding vision, because it is your day & it should be everything you want it to be.

PHoToGRAPHY SARAH FANTOM

Known for evoking Cape Cod’s beauty in her designs, Desiree Spinner became an event stylist after some adventure-filled years. She grew up in Barnstable and attended the University of Connecticut, where she met her future husband, Craig. After planning her own joyous wedding celebration, the couple married and had a son, Luke. Still, Desiree couldn’t help but feel the lure of foreign travel. She went to Italy for a semester abroad and fell in love with the culture. “To this day, I draw inspiration from the beauty I witnessed there,” she says.

Inspired by her t ime overseas and her experience planning events for relatives and friends, a task she had taken to naturally, Desiree and her family moved back home to Cape Cod, where she embarked on her new adventure – Desiree Spinner Events. With each celebration, she finds herself more in love with her job. “Planning my own wedding was one of the happiest times of my life, and I’m lucky to share in that special moment with brides.”

The ring is sparkly, you’ve said “Yes!” and you’re off on a whirlwind of planning for the big day. Chances are you’ve already spent some time thinking about who will be your wedding attendants — siblings, close friends, or other relatives near and dear to you. They’ll be your support group, errand runners, and ambassadors-at-large at your reception. But being an attendant can come with a hefty price tag; besides clothing and gifts, attendants must also pay for their own transportation. It may also require using precious vacation time or unpaid work days to attend the wedding and pre-wedding events. While it is an attendant’s

job to assist the bride whenever possible, the considerate bride won’t treat her team as her personal minions. Before you extend that all-important “Will you be in my wedding?” invitation, consider what you’re asking. Here are a few important attendants’ responsibilities:

the nicest way you can show your appreciation to your attendants is with a handwritten note thanking them for all they’ve done. whether on its own or accompanied by a small gift, it will let your “best people” know just how much their love, help, and support have meant to you.

are canceled. Don’t forget that the bride and groom’s families are responsible for pro-viding accommodations for the attendants. Local friends and family may be able to provide guest rooms; otherwise, book hotel rooms early.

{Party Time} Members of the wedding party must attend show-ers, the rehearsal dinner, and other pre-wedding parties when feasible.

Unless your attendants all live nearby, someone will be traveling. Try scheduling more than one event over a single weekend when possible. For example, throw a bach-elorette party or bridesmaid’s luncheon on a Saturday and a shower the next day.

{Gift Giving} Attendants will end up presenting several gifts to the bride and groom. Traditionally, there is a wedding gift, an

attendants’ gift, a shower gift… it can seem overwhelming. Let them know that you consider their participation itself to be their wedding gift to you. If more than one showeris proposed, ask the host to think about themes that don’t require a cash outlay for a gift, such as a recipe shower. Events like that are a welcome change of pace and encourage attendants to be extra creative and thoughtfulwhen putting together gifts.

{Wedding To-Do’s} Your team will be asked to assist you whenever possible and be atten-tive to guests at the reception. They

will do their utmost to help you carry out your wedding plans, but that doesn’t mean they need to cater to your every whim. Be respectful of their time and resources.Be clear about your expectations and whether you have particular assignments in mind. Set up “communication central” and be sure that all your attendants can access it. While keeping everyone in the loop is critical, bombarding them with daily posts is excessive.

{Bachelorette} If you’re dreaming of a bachelorette weekend in Las Vegas, well, that’s a group decision, too. It’s a modern myth

that the attendants must host a shower or a bachelor or bachelorette party for the bride and/or groom. Given their fi nancial com-mitments, no bridesmaid or usher should be forced to shell out for a party that’s beyond their budget.

{It’s All in the Tux} They will have to purchase or rent their wedding attire and accessories — shoes, hats, ties, accessories —

everything they’ll wear except the fl owers. Brides can make this more economical by choosing dresses that truly can be worn again and opting for hairstyles and makeup that don’t require a salon. Give hair ornamentsor jewelry as your gift to your bridesmaids; grooms can give ties to their ushers. Reus-able accessories and clothing are always appreciated. Plus, they’ll always remember your wedding when they wear them!

{Transportation} They will need to pay for their own trans-portation. These days, almost every wedding is a destination wedding.

Offer to pay any travel agent’s fee so your attendants don’t have to. A full-service travel agency can coordinate travel for the wedding party, will have access to discount fares, and can handle rebookings if fl ights

Amy Bourne and Jesse Peck met online. Things seemed to go well as they got to know each other via email, but there was one lingering doubt that kept Amy from agreeing to a real date. “I didn’t believe one of Jesse’s profi le pictures — of him in midair, coasting off a ski-race jump — was real,” says Amy. It wasn’t until Jesse provided her with the Boston Globe article in which the photo had appeared that the two fi nally met in person.

Initially, they took it slow. Amy was happy living in Manhattan, as was Jesse in Brooklyn, and both enjoyed getting to know each other’s homes. One day, Amy mentioned that she would love to bicycle through Brooklyn, and Jesse surprised her with a vintage Schwinn, complete with a basket and bell. “We rode around Prospect Park, to Coney Island, Red Hook, and Ocean Parkway,” says Amy. As they got to know the city — and each other — better, they found themselves in love. But it was on a trip to Canada to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Quebec City’s Winter Carnival that Jesse fi nally realized he had found The One. “Six months of dating, 10 hours driving each way, a day of skiing at Mont Saint Anne, trekking through mountains of snow for cassoulet and Bordeaux, and fi nally, Jesse was ready to go steady,” says Amy.

During the summer of the following year, Amy and Jesse visited the Hamptons and decided to bike up Montauk’s rolling hills to the town’s historic lighthouse. As they recovered on the rocks, Jesse took a ring out of his pocket. “Delirious from the heat, we joke that neither of us remembers exactly what happened,” says Amy. When she accepted, the couple celebrated with a refreshing dip in the chilly Atlantic waves before hopping back on their bikes to continue the day’s fun.

As they began planning the wedding, many wonderful, serendipitous events convinced them that fate was on their side. First, it turned out that their fl oral designer had grown up summering in the same town in Maine where Jesse had spent his childhood, and had already constructed a huppa from Maine-grown trees that the couple felt was the perfect structure for them to be married under. “As Jesse is an architect, the home that the huppa from Maine represented felt connected and symbolic,” says Amy.

The next charmed occurrence came when they visited Amy’s mother in Cape Cod shortly after becoming engaged. Out of curiosity, Amy asked her if she still happened to have her own wedding gown.

She did — and when Amy tried it on, she found it to be a perfect fi t. At fi rst, she didn’t plan to wear it, but after trying on various gowns in New York, she realized her mom’s dress felt the most comfortable. Later, at the reception, she strung up old family photos and was delighted at her guests’ reactions: “I loved watching people discover the one of my mom, who I look so much like, at her own 1972 wedding and making the connection.”

Amy and Jesse’s wedding day was a lot like their relationship — unhurried, relaxed, and sweet. Guests played catch with old baseball gloves as the sun set after cocktail hour, and the bride and groom impressed everyone by kicking off the reception with a nontraditional fi rst dance to the Ting Ting’s “That’s Not My Name.” “It defi nitely set the tone for the rest of the evening and was worth the hours of dance lessons in our tiny living room in the city,” says Amy. After a perfect evening and a few surprises — Amy’s 89-year-old grandfather boogied to Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer” as guests circled around him, cheering — the bride and groom left the celebration, knowing they were one step further along in their journey together, thanks in part to one vintage Schwinn bicycle.

Carly Childers and Ted Friedman met on the fi rst day of law school in Denver, Colorado, and as they both fondly remember, neither had any doubt that they had found true love. As Carly explains it, “We noticed each other on day one, and after some chips, salsa, and a few margaritas, we were both off the market by day two.” The new couple navigated school together, studying side by side for exams, traveling with each other during holidays, and fi nally preparing together to graduate and take the bar exam. “After years in school, trips back home, traveling far away, and spending nearly every day together since we arrived in Denver, we were more than ready to put just one name on our mailbox,” says Carly.

After taking the bar exam in Colorado, Carly and Ted escaped for a couple of weeks to Pilot Hill Farm in Martha’s Vineyard, where Ted grew up, for a relaxing getaway. One morning, Ted woke Carly as the sun was rising over a mist-veiled ocean and suggested they take a walk along the shore. Ted brought coffee and muffi ns from Carly’s favorite bakery, and it wasn’t long before they settled in on a blanket on the sand, musing over how much they had grown as a couple. “Ted told me that he couldn’t imagine spending his life with anyone else, and then he got on one knee and asked me to marry him,” says Carly. It was an honest and relaxed moment, with no need for elaborate gestures or fanfare. As the warming sun burned off the fog from the gentle morning waves, Carly accepted.

Though Carly is from Tucson, Arizona, she knew Pilot Hill Beach was the perfect place for their wedding. However, she wanted to incorporate a touch of home by making use of desert elements. Beginning by settling on neutral tones for their color palette — camel, linen, raffi a, dusty rose, and charcoal grey — she also worked cacti, rocks, sand, and succulents into the décor. A Caroline Herrera gown with ruffl es gave off a funky Southwestern vibe, and the couple made special arrangements for festive Mexican food to be shipped from a restaurant in Tucson to be served at the reception. After months of planning, all the elements were in place for the best Arizona-inspired wedding the island had ever seen.

On the morning of the wedding, the bride surprised her bridesmaids with custom-made charm bracelets featuring personalized charms for each of them that recalled moments they had shared together. “Watching their faces and smiles as they opened them and went through each charm, remembering certain times together with me, was priceless,” she says. At their beachside ceremony, Carly honored

her late father by including in the program a quote of his that he had written for her high school yearbook, which had been published shortly after he died. In reference to their favorite movie to watch together, The Princess Bride, the quote read, “It’s inconceivable how quickly my princess bride grew up, I hope your life goes as you wish.” Carly’s brother also read a tale from Greek mythology about Odysseus and his journey home to his wife, a story that their father had read to them many times growing up. “It was such a perfect nod to my dad and our childhood, while also being meaningful and relevant to the journey Ted and I are embarking on,” says Carly.

Perhaps the couple’s favorite part of the day was their fi rst kiss as husband and wife. Each guest rang a tiny bell, creating gorgeous music and providing them with wedding bells even though they hadn’t been married in a church. After saying their vows in the very same spot where Ted had proposed, the couple made their way down the aisle together among the bells, eager to begin their journey as husband and wife.

Having recently graduated from college, Becca and Mike were both braving the bright lights of Boston, scared out of their wits, when they met through Mike’s cousin Taylor, who had been a close friend of Becca’s in school. When Taylor introduced them, in Becca’s basement apartment, the sparks fl ew, but not in the conventional way. Instead, a playfully mocking banter ensued between them, with Becca poking fun at Mike’s clothes and Mike suggesting Becca should consider a different hairstyle. “The banter really snowballed from there,” says Becca. “And after several unhinged nights bowling downtown, a perfect pair within a giant group, the two of us were dating in no time.” Before they knew it, Becca and Mike were sharing a tiny Beacon Street studio apartment for one formative winter, undeniably in love.

While traveling together in Bar Harbor, Maine, Mike knew it was the perfect opportunity to propose. Becca was running in her fi rst half-marathon, and the two were staying at a local bed and breakfast. While Becca ran in the race, Mike worked with the inn’s chef to prepare a table of champagne, fl owers, and candles in their room. Meeting Becca at the fi nish line, Mike chatted with her as idly as possible, secretly feeling weak in the knees. As they approached the inn, Mike led her into the gardens with a question about the fl owers. Becca, a gardener at heart, couldn’t resist the lush blooms. Fumbling to fi nd the ring in its hiding place within his camera bag, Mike swiveled to one knee, asking simply, “Bee, will you marry me?” Naturally, she accepted.

Months later, Becca and Mike were visiting Martha’s Vineyard on a rainy winter day for Becca’s mother’s birthday when she gazed into the backyard and found herself imagining a wedding there. She and Mike had already begun planning a celebration in a historic mansion in Vermont but had never been quite set with the idea. “I asked Mike how he felt about the change, and immediately he was into it. It was the piece that was missing,” says Becca. After that, everything seemed to fall into place for the couple, with their West Tisbury celebration planned for September.

Anyone holding an outdoor wedding inevitably has to come up with a rain plan, especially in the fi ckle New England climate. However, as Hurricane Earl approached the East Coast, the couple’s original rain plan — the Chillmark Community Center — was designated as the region’s emergency shelter. Many of the wedding guests had made the

trip early to avoid the storm, but the couple fell asleep on the eve of the wedding to howling winds and sheet-like rain, with no idea what the next day would look like. As luck would have it, “On Saturday morning at 4:30 a.m., I woke up to fi nd almost dry grass. It felt like a fantasy,” says Becca.

Under sunny blue skies, Becca walked down the aisle that day wearing the same drop-pearl earrings and cathedral-length veil her sister had worn at her wedding. Taking their own spin on the seven blessings, family and friends of the bride and groom contributed one poem, three readings, a song, and original blessings from each of their parents. The reception made use of gold and champagne tones, with raspberry accents. Looking back, Becca remembers one of her favorite parts of the day as being serenaded not just once, but twice. Mike began by singing “Bring It on Home” by Sam Cooke while strumming on his guitar, and later, all of her bridesmaids circled her on the fl oor and sang along to her favorite song, “Hold On” by Wilson Phillips.

Dancing together in the light of the moon on their sweet and simple wedding day, Becca and Mike could not have asked for anything more.

Any bride with plans for a do-it-yourself wedding hidden up her lace-adorned sleeve knows that a true DIY event requires a lot of help from family and friends. That was the case for Alicia and Shez, who took on a lot of DIY projects in the months leading up to their Wellfl eet wedding, all from their cozy apartment in London.

Alicia and Shez were eager to make their wedding a playful, unconventional, and whimsical celebration of their love that was also an honest refl ection of their personalities. They had originally met at a “fancy dress” party in London, at which the guests wore costumes representing different tube stops in the city. “We were together for about two years, crossing London to stay over at each other’s houses, before we moved in together,” says Alicia.

While hiking together on the west coast of Wales one weekend, they began to talk about marriage, and both were surprised at how serious the discussion became. “Then and there it was decided that it felt like the loveliest and most natural thing for us to do,” says Alicia. On a bluff overlooking the bay, the couple celebrated with sandwiches and ale, totally content and completely in love.

Months before the wedding, the bride-and-groom-to-be set to work on their homemade decorations, starting by creating about 500 feet of vibrant bunting. Luckily, many of their friends were happy to help, and the bunting ended up being one of the best décor elements of the day. The couple’s invitations were lovingly hand-drawn by one friend who happened to be an artist, and printed on a gocco by a second friend — one in London and one in New York, who had never met yet worked seamlessly together.

Alicia and Shez created their own table numbers using different patterns of quirky fabric and making them into mini-fl ags. “We sewed all the number fl ags with a friend and then painted cereal box cartons to make them stand up straight,” says Alicia. They placed them in antique soda bottles that Shez fi lled with sand he had collected from Cahoon Hollow Beach the day before the wedding.

One of the biggest challenges for Alicia and Shez was not the DIY projects themselves, but the problem of transporting the results across "the pond" to Massachusetts. Despite their best efforts, many of their planned items were simply impossible to ship overseas. “I think there were quite a few things I would have liked to DIY but didn’t get the chance because we wouldn’t have been able

to transport them,” says Alicia. There were some successes, though, such as the ribbons Alicia had come across at a local shop in London and had shipped to Massachusetts; the ribbons were given out to guests to double as name tags and place cards, a charming and homey touch.

The morning of the wedding, several family members crowded the kitchen at Alicia’s grandmother’s house, busily baking cakes and pies for the celebration. Though the celebration was moved indoors due to rain, and a few pieces of décor got wet in the process, the room looked gorgeous nonetheless. “I felt a bit sad to see the decorations I’d spent months making slowly disintegrate, but it looked completely beautiful anyway,” says Alicia. Guests helped themselves to a decadent dessert buffet that boasted rich English-style trifl e, cupcakes, cakes, and pies.

Alicia and Shez were pleased with the outcome of all of their hard work. The day was joyous and ended up being a true celebration of their personalities — and their love. However, both know they couldn’t have done it without help. As Alicia explains, “This wedding was very much a product of many lovely people pitching in.”

During the years that Jaclyn and Trevor spent at Boston College, a mutual friend of theirs repeatedly told them they were perfect for one another. Somehow, though, it wasn’t until the fall of their senior year that they fi nally met. By the spring semester they were dating, and they happily informed their friend that he had been completely right. “It just seemed natural because he was the person I always wanted to be around and who made me laugh the loudest,” says Jaclyn.

Though Trevor is from New York City, he stayed in Boston after graduation, unwilling to move away from Jaclyn. However, Jaclyn was soon offered a job as an overnight producer and morning news anchor for a television station in Binghamton, New York. Thus began nearly fi ve years of long-distance dating. “We both feel it allowed us time to work on ourselves and our careers,” says Jaclyn. “Having a long-distance relationship can be challenging, but we always made time for one another.” If anything, the time apart only reaffi rmed that they were meant for each other.

During Memorial Day weekend of 2009, Trevor planned a getaway for them in Vermont, complete with a stay at the luxurious Twin Farms in Barnard. On Sunday, the couple went for a hike along the winding trails of a nearby mountain. With sunlight fi ltering through the lush spring foliage, the day couldn’t have been more beautiful. When they stopped for a short break on the trail, Trevor seized the moment and asked Jaclyn to be his wife — but the romance of the day wasn’t over yet. “We returned to our cottage, where there was champagne on ice, a lobster lunch waiting for us, and a beautiful bouquet of fl owers,” says Jaclyn.

Jaclyn grew up spending summers with her family at the Chatham Bars Inn, and later at her father’s house on Strong Island. Trevor fell in love with the region as soon as she introduced him to the quiet waters and sunny summer days of the Cape. “We both have traveled around the world and agree there’s no place better than the Cape in August,” says Jaclyn. With so many shared memories of the area, there seemed no better place for them to be married than right there at the Chatham Bars Inn.

The pair embarked on planning for a true destination wedding weekend — complete with a pre-wedding beach party and an elaborate outdoor celebration. Jaclyn’s goal was to make her wedding one of the best her 200 guests had ever attended. After a sweet and personal ceremony in which their pastor read aloud their written

“HE WAS THE PERSON I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE AROUND AND WHO MADE ME LAUGH THE LOUDEST,” SAYS JACLYN.

letters explaining why they wanted to marry each other, attendees arrived at the Chatham Bars Inn for a lively celebration. Spirited swing dancers performed to the music of an energetic big band. The couple chose to serve a huge variety of appetizers followed by a lighter meal so everyone could spend as much time as possible on the dance fl oor. Under the beautiful tent of handmade sailcloth, a candy bar enticed guests to indulge in sweet treats, while a photobooth provided hilarious snapshots commemorating the day. Hand-rolled cigars were served to the guests as a fi nishing touch to the celebration.

Guests wrapped up the evening in the Chatham Bars Inn’s luxurious ballroom, complete with delicious late-night snacks, a DJ, and a light show pulsing with the energy of a nightclub. Guests enjoyed a ten minute fi reworks display, many huddled in pashminas, passed out by servers to keep everyone warm. Their celebration more than satisfi ed Jaclyn’s aim of providing the best wedding her guests had ever attended. After all, Jaclyn and Trevor’s extraordinary love had survived years of separation, so it was only natural that they be honored with an extraordinary celebration.

Just before Thanksgiving in 2009, Katie Cook and Dan Suozzi went out to dinner, eager to spend a little time alone before the holiday festivities began. Katie, however, had no idea that Dan was planning to make this a dinner she would remember forever. A longtime friend of the restaurant’s owner, he had arranged for the room to be empty by the time they fi nished their meal. After the last of the customers had gone, Dan asked Katie to close her eyes. “He took a ring he had given me, which I wore on my right ring fi nger, and slipped it onto my left hand, asking, ‘Will you marry me?’” she says. In actuality, while her eyes were closed, Dan switched the inexpensive ring with a diamond engagement ring. “It took me a few minutes to look down at my hand and realize that the proposal was real, at which time I gasped, ‘Yes!’” says Katie. The couple didn’t have to go far to share the good news — Dan had invited their families and friends to a restaurant right next door.

Katie and Dan met through a mutual friend at Duke University, but it wasn’t until they both moved to New York City and found themselves at many of the same social events that they began to date. They agree that their attraction to each other was magnetic and undeniable. “We both knew very early on that we were destined to be married one day,” Katie says simply.

At the beginning of their relationship, Katie traveled to Nantucket with Dan and fell in love with the island. Her mother happened to be looking for a summer rental at the time, and at Katie’s suggestion, she rented a home just outside the main town. Her family has since spent every summer there, so naturally, it was the perfect spot for the wedding. “Throughout our relationship, Nantucket was a place we both loved and had great memories of together,” says Katie.

Because many of the guests would be traveling long distances to attend, the couple planned three days worth of activities for everyone to enjoy. The groomsmen got a chance to show their competitive sides at a golf match, winning trophies for “Longest Drive,” “Closest to the Pin,” and “Biggest Loser” (for the player with the highest score) — honors they proudly presented at the rehearsal dinner.

Katie’s grandparents were unable to attend the wedding, so the couple made special arrangements for them to “host” a cocktail party that weekend. “We had a photo displayed of their wedding day and handed out candy almonds, which our grandfather always

“WE BOTH KNEW VERY EARLY ON THAT WE WERE DESTINED TO BE MARRIED ONE DAY,” KATIE SAYS SIMPLY.

gave us as kids and are a tradition at Italian weddings,” says Katie. Katie's godmother also read a poem that her grandfather had read many times to his children and grandchildren.

Katie and Dan wanted to make the wedding unique with the clever use of personal details. They had worked carefully with their reverend to select the readings and music, and as they exited the church, Katie’s cousin surprised her by playing the bagpipes. Instead of just a single wedding cake, Katie indulged her powerful sweet tooth by turning the cake table into a decadent dessert bar, complete with jars of candy and delicious cupcakes.

While the wedding went as smoothly as they could have hoped, a few days later, the bride and groom were surprised to receive an e-mail from a wedding crasher. “I’m 72 and my wife is 65,” the e-mail read, “but we were party crashers! I had the opportunity to dance with lots of your beautiful young guests and had a wonderful time. The reception was fantastic, and we wish you and your lovely bride all the happiness in the world.” Looking back, Katie and Dan can’t help but laugh about their uninvited guests. Some celebrations are so much fun, they simply can’t be missed.

From the age of 10, Sabrina dreamed of a Nantucket wedding. Growing up, she spent two weeks of every summer under the Nantucket sun, and when she met Aaron a mere 14 years later, an island wedding was still on her mind. They had met on their fi rst day at Columbia Business School and began dating later that year. “From the moment we offi cially became a couple, everything seemed to fl ow naturally, and we realized that we were a pretty good team,” Sabrina says. Still, she didn’t notice how serious things had become until they traveled together to visit her family in Slovenia and Croatia during the summer of 2007. “After three weeks of traveling, Aaron and I found ourselves in a Munich hotel on our way home, eating cheeseburgers and drinking beer, and we realized we were in love,” she says.

Two years later, the couple was relaxing one lazy Saturday when Aaron glanced out the window and noticed ominous clouds gathering over the Hudson River. Unwilling to allow the weather to thwart his romantic plans for a sunset proposal, he urged Sabrina to join him for a walk along the water. He waited until he found a nice patch of grass before getting to one knee and sweetly asking Sabrina to marry him. “We were both so nervous and in such shock that neither remembers what was said, but the results are all that matter,” says Sabrina.

After the proposal, Sabrina knew immediately that her Nantucket wedding dreams were about to come true. Luckily, Aaron had always been fond of the beach and took to the island right away. The couple embarked on planning for a fabulous outdoor tented wedding celebration. There was only one little problem — Hurricane Earl. As their wedding weekend approached, fl ights and ferries were canceled, vendors worried they wouldn’t make it, and of course, their outdoor wedding plans had to be changed. Sabrina and Aaron tried to remain calm, but it was diffi cult. “There were defi nitely tears in the days leading up to our departure for Nantucket,” says Sabrina, “But once we got there, we realized it was still going to be our wedding weekend and it was defi nitely going to be memorable.”

Nicole Whelden of Unique Nantucket Events worked tirelessly to execute their rain plan, moving the wedding to its indoor location of Sconset Casino and arranging for Zofi a Waig of Zofi a Photography to come to the rescue when the couple’s New York City photographer canceled because of the storm. Nearly all the guests attended, and when Sabrina and Aaron awoke the morning of their wedding to a perfect, sunny morning, they knew there was nothing to worry about.

THE COUPLE EMBARKED ON PLANNING FOR A FABULOUS OUTDOOR TENTED WEDDING CELEBRATION. THERE WAS ONLY ONE LITTLE PROBLEM — HURRICANE EARL.

The ceremony at Whales' Watchwas nondenominational, but asa nod to Aaron’s Jewish background, they were married under a huppa that had been hand-sewn by Aaron’s mother. Sabrina also had lace cuffs from her great-grandmother’s wedding blouse, dating to 1914, sewn into her own gown, and wore a small Ganesha pin her godmother had given her. “Ganesha, among other things, is the remover of obstacles. Little did she know when she let me borrow that, that we’d be dealing with Hurricane Earl!” she says.

The Sconset Casino was even better than the bride and groom could have imagined. “After fi ghting through Earl to get to Nantucket, I think all of us were ready to relax and have a good time,” says Sabrina. The dance fl oor was packed all evening, friends gave many impromptu dancing and singing performances, and guests even donned fake mustaches — which Aaron had arranged to be passed around on trays. It wasn’t quite the wedding they had planned on originally, but after they had said their “I do's” in the presence of all the people they loved, moving indoors and changing their plans hardly seemed like a compromise.

Judy Fl igg, of a l l about Flowers for Weddings, has an uncanny ability to create celebrations that truly express a bride and groom’s personalities, and she’s lucky enough that she can honestly say she loves her job — even when the occasional rainstorm threatens to upset her carefully laid plans.

Judy first met with Kelly Winn and eric Hiltz about seven months before their august wedding. Kelly’s maid of honor had previously enlisted Judy’s help for her own ceremony, and after seeing her work, Kelly knew Judy was the one to design her wedding, as well. the process began when Kelly and her mother met with Judy to discuss their vision, beginning with the

colors they were interested in and their ideas for the décor. “Flowers were a huge part of the overall look and feel for the wedding,” says Judy. “each part of the venue was to have its own unique look, with hot pink as the main color.” as the wedding plans grew, so did the budget, but that was something Judy was more than willing to

work with them on. “We do not have a minimum,” she says. “our couples and families can spend $2,000 or $20,000 and be given the same level of creativity and service.” By the time they were a few months away from the big day, Kelly and eric’s vision was set to come to life.

the breathtaking ceremony took place outdoors at the Wychmere Harbor club, a gorgeous seaside spot. it was a very warm day, but the weather report predicted a rainstorm would take place at the same time as the vows. despite this potential hitch, Judy decided to go ahead and prepare the lawn, setting up and decorating the arbor with beautiful blooms, adorning the chairs with fl owers, and scattering a petal carpet along the length of the aisle. the skies opened up just as the ceremony was completed, and as soon as the rain stopped, a beautiful rainbow appeared. it turned out to be a perfect wedding despite the weather, though Judy and her staff had chosen to remain onsite just in case they had to move the celebration indoors. “We will move all the décor around to make it all work. No bride should ever have to ‘settle’ for anything,” says Judy.

No matter how many obstacles are encountered over the course of a wedding, Judy never tires of the challenge of creating extraordinary events. “it makes it all worthwhile when we get a call from the honeymooning couple because they can’t wait to tell us that the flowers and décor were more beautiful than they ever could have expected,” she says.

on-site wedding coordinator will happily recommend local wedding professionals to handle any details not offered by the resort. a wide range of accommodations makes the property ideal for destination weddings. guests accommodations include a two bedroom cottage or a two or four bedroom suite at the Winnetu Hotel, one of 50 suites and studios at the adjoining Winnetu inn, or one of several three to fi ve bedroom town homes at the adjacent Mattakesett. the range of

accommodation options makes the resort a fantastic place for couples planning a large wedding on Martha’s Vineyard.

the Winnetu oceanside resort has no shortage of ceremony venues. couples can say their “i do’s” alongside the crashing waves of south Beach, inside a charming gazebo on the resort’s lawn, atop an outdoor deck offering expansive ocean views, or inside the property’s intimate library. the Winnetu also offers the “Mattakesett room” for larger weddings, a light and airy banquet space boasting high ceilings and charming French doors leading to an adjacent patio.

Quaint and quintessentially New england, edgartown is the perfect location for a destination wedding. easily accessible by ferry, Martha’s Vineyard’s first colonial settlement is ripe with history, featuring an outstanding collection of greek revival houses built in the 19th century by whaling captains, including the famous home of captain Valentine pease, mentioned in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. guests can hop on a complimentary shuttle service and arrive in the heart of edgartown in just minutes, where movie theaters, boutiques, restaurants, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, and the edgartown Lighthouse await them.

guests can look forward to spending the wedding weekend listening to the soft crash of waves, lounging in adirondack chairs beside a rippling pond, or indulging in some on-site yoga. at the Winnetu oceanside resort, your adventure together is just beginning.
