In some towns there is development work and the

landscapes on some islands are barren to the point

o desolation! You may also fnd the riendly, cajoling

nature o some o the street sellers takes some time to

get used to, but in our experience a smile and frm n

What to expectHard to beat as an all round holiday destinationThe Cape Verde islands are a crescent shaped archipelago

500km west o Senegal in the Atlantic Ocean. Separated as

they are rom the rest o Arica, they have their own uniquely

diverse culture and their own strong sense o history and

belonging that is at once very Arican yet apart, inimitable.

This diversity is only multiplied by the act that each individual island is also

so dierent rom its neighbours dierent in people and history, dierent in

landscape, dierent in levels o development. It all adds up to an incredibly

alive destination, raw and emerging or sure, but with a tropical climate a

enough beauty and beguiling charm or even the most jaded o travellers

The short ights (around 6 hours), the small time dierence and the rien

people all add to the appeal not to mention that the islands are still low

key enough to eel like a bit o a discovery.

The ten islands all oer something dierent, and whilst its true that most

holidaymakers come to Cape Verde to simply relax in the sunshine it doe

pay to explore, as theres so much variety on oer. Youll fnd excellent

hotels and beaches; sun and sur on Sal and Boa Vista; an active volcano

on Fogo where they produce their own remarkable wine; the genuinely

breathtaking interior o Santo Anto with its rice terraces clinging to crags

and precipices, and the throb o music in the cultural centre o Mindelo on

So Vicente. Something or everyone!

Flying is the most practical way o travelling rom island to island however

it should be noted that TACV, who provide the islands internal ights, can

and do change schedules and ights are sometimes delayed, cancelled or

early, though this has improved a good deal in recent years. For this reason

we may recommend an overnight stay on Sal or Boa Vista or one night

prior to, or ollowing an international ight. The smaller islands are more

difcult to visit due to inrequent ights but our team will be happy to advise

what itineraries are possible. There is a regular erry service that operates

between So Vicente and Santo Anto. For more inormation on the

smaller islands such as So Nicolau, Brava, Maio and Santa Luzia please visit

With its mixture o sun, excellent beaches and geographical, cultural and

historical interest, the Cape Verde islands are hard to beat as an all round

holiday destination.

Tourism - the actsIt is vital to remember that tourism is still very much in its inancy in CapeVerde and health and saety and service levels in hotels and restaurants

are not always up to those hotels in more established destinations. There

is poverty and you may encounter locals trying to sell you paintings and

handicrats. Despite being o-putting at times, the sellers are quite harmless

and are very ew and ar between. There is ongoing development on the

islands, which can range rom single villas to huge complexes and during your

visit you are likely to see and hear some building work. I there is building

work taking place either in, or next to your chosen hotel, we will advise you.

A bit o backgroundGiven the position o the Cape Verde islands 500km rom the coast

o West Arica its not surprising that they remained uninhabited until

Portguese traders populated them in the 15th century. The islands became

an outpost o the Portuguese empire and a stop on trading and slaving

routes across the Atlantic. As such the islands do have a unique culture, part

West Arican, part Portuguese, and the people are fercely proud o their

heritage both on a national and individual island level.

CurrencyThe currency in Cape Verde is Escudo expressed as $ or CV Esc beore

the amount which can only be obtained on the islands and there is a fxe

exchange rate o $100 to 1 Euro. Euros are also generally accepted so w

recommend that you take Euros in place o Sterling. Travellers cheques c

be changed on some islands but the commission rates are high and while

Visa credit cards are accepted all other cards are not.



INTRODUCTION

A antastic climateThe weather on each island can vary but year round temperatures

on all the islands are in the mid to high twenties. Sal and Boa Vista

enjoy virtually uninterrupted sunshine with very ew days o rain

each year. High winds can be experienced at certain times o the

year however this makes or low humidity and creates excellentwatersports conditions.

Restaurants and nightlieYou will fnd a selection o restaurants in the main towns oering local

Creole dishes as well as international cuisine and many will have live

Cape Verdean music at least once a week. There are numerous bars

and restaurants in the likes o Santa Maria and Mindelo and these can be

throbbing with music long into the night. The smaller islands including BoVista do not have such a wide selection and the limited menu may well

be what they have prepared on the day. Prices vary, but expect to pay th

equivalent o between 25-30 or a three course meal with wine.

Language and cultureThe ofcial language o the islands is Portuguese, which is used in anythin

that is written; yet Portuguese is rarely spoken. Instead they use Creole,

their national language, and even this can dier rom island to island.

The Cape Verdeans are generally very riendly and welcoming many

people will approach just to chat and to use and practise their English.

Getting around Cape VerdeTaxis are readily available in the larger towns and as a guide, a 2 to 3 mile

journey would be approximately 3. The most inexpensive way o gettin

around are the aluguers that are easily identifed and drive around towns

oten ull o passengers and packages. You simply shout when you want to

get o! Car hire is available but roads are poor and quite bumpy outside t

main towns with little signage so we do not recommend this.

VaccinationsAt the time this brochure was printed no vaccinations were required to v

the Cape Verde islands.

FamiliesChildren are an important part o Cape Verdean lie and are adored

throughout the islands. Many hotels oer play areas, clubs or daily activiti

suitable or children to join in. A trip to the islands will prove extremely

interesting due to the vibrant culture, changing landscape and the range

o activities available inside and out o the hotels. Please check in the hote

Take a quick glance at the huge golden sweep o the beach at Santa Maria and youll be under no illusion as to why the

island o Sal has become amous or its beach holidays; and i youre looking to totally switch o and spend some time

soaking up the sun, we might just have the perect thing or you...

Viewed rom a plane window ater a ew hours o the slatey blue o the

Atlantic Ocean, Sal is quite a prospect. The interior o the island is o redd

rock, and or the most part is almost completely barren. But as you desce

you notice the contrast in colours between the sea and the interior, and

then the eye is drawn to those beaches and everything starts to make sen

The act that all the hotels on the island are well placed to make the most

this gorgeous mix o sea and sand only serves to heighten this sense. Sal

simple proposition, and it does what it does very well indeed.

Santa Maria is where youll fnd most o the hotels, plus a continually

growing number o bars and restaurants oering a variety o dishes.

The highlight is o course the wonderully resh seaood, which you can s

being brought into the towns port every day. The town is only 20 or so

minutes rom the airport, so you can be poolside or on the beach quickly

ater touching down. The beach is exceptional and does seem to roll on

orever so its not difcult to fnd a nice quiet spot to relax in.

Many visitors come to Sal or the watersports and i ts hardly surprising. S

long sandy beaches and turquoise waters make a wonderul playground

or windsurfng, kite surfng and surfng. The wind can sometimes be very

strong and Sal is considered to be amongst the worlds top fve windsurf

locations. Diving is also available and there are plenty o places to hire

equipment and organise trips, which can be arranged by our resort team

There is currently development work happening across Sal including Sant

Maria. However, we have ound it does not detract rom the main reaso

people go to Santa Maria the sun and the glorious sandy beach.

Customer Favourite - Couples - Beachfront

he Morabeza remains our most popular hotel in the

Cape Verde islands and with good reason! Its amily

run and riendly, has great acilities and restaurants, and is

located just a ew steps rom a glorious white sandy beach.

Morabeza is a local word meaning hospitality - a term which the hotel

more than lives up to. Its the longest established hotel on Sal, and was

originally the home o a Belgian amily. The act that it s now run by the

original owners granddaughter (one Sophie Marcellesi) adds a real sense ocontinuity and provides the unique amily atmosphere. It has developed into

a very attractive and much sought ater hotel, particularly with the addition

o a new block housing a second pool area with superb executive rooms

and suites, that have proved extremely popular with our guests.

The grounds o the hotel are lush and extensive with a broad range o

superbly urnished room types and with excellent acilities at every turn:

a large quiet pool area with a bar, tennis courts and mini-gol, a well stocked

play room with games, a pool table and table tennis, archery and a gym.

All this and yet the hotel never eels overly busy, it absorbs everything into

its air o peace and calm. There is also the superb Le Beach Club, which is

right on the beach and has a reputation or being the perect spot or lunch,

or a rereshing drink.

A popular way to explore the hotels excellent restaurants and themed

evening meals is the Bon Appetit dining option. With this, you get dinner in

the Les Palmiers restaurant on the rst and last night o your stay and the

Excellent, quirky hotel of great charm and

quality. Great Location.

his is a small, riendly hotel run by a Cape Verdean

amily. Its popular with our guests because o its

location close to the heart o Santa Maria and right on a

private sandy beach its excellent restaurant, and or the

personal touches in the dcor.

Walking into the reception area rom the bright gardens, you immediately

notice the dark wood interior, the antiques and photographs rom the

owners amily history. The warmth o the greeting adds to this amilyatmosphere as well as the personal guided tour o the hotel.

The views rom the swimming pool across the private beach to the sea are

abulous; and in the evenings the O Farolin restaurant, perched above the

sea on a sea wall promontory, comes alive with gentle live music and serves

some o the nest sea ood anywhere on Sal, all reshly caught that day.

Although tucked away in a private location, the Odjo dAgua is close enough

or a stroll along the main Santa Maria beach, and a mere ew hundred

metres rom the town itsel perect or exploring the ever-growing

There is a tendency to resort to over-used adjectives when describing Boa Vista tranquil, beautiul, unique. Yet there

is something o all o those things in this beguiling little island. It can eel a little cut-o at times though this is slowly

changing due to the presence o an international airport - but i you want to truly escape and relax its the perect place,

and the beaches will take your breath away.

Boa Vistas main town and population centre is Sal Rei, a sleepy little port in

the north west o the island. It is starting to gather a small selection o bars

and restaurants, but like a microcosm o the island it all tends to be airly

low key. This is translated to the hotels, which although having varying levels

o acilities, daytime activities and night time entertainment, do tend to be

places to relax and unwind. What the hotels all share however is privileged

access to the real allure o Boa Vista the beaches.

Te perfect place to truly escape and relaxIsland of Boa VistaI you think o Boa Vista as an extension o the Sahara desert, then youll

have some idea o the landscape o the island: its a rock covered in sand.

So whilst the interior o the island is something o a red-rock moonscape,

the outer edges are dominated by miles o sweeping golden sand.

The Praia des Chaves beach, upon which three o our hotels stand, is a

stunning prospect, hundreds o metres wide and stacked up at one end with

massive dunes.

Santa Monica, in the south o the island, is something else again: currently

it can only be reached by 4x4 along a cragged 6km track; its 15kms o sand

stretch away rom you in either direction. All o this means that the island is

both a haven or wildlie, with Boa Vista being one o the worlds key nesting

sites or loggerhead turtles, and a great venue or watersports o all types,

rom surng including kite and wind, to deep-sea shing, diving and more.

This all-inclusive hotel is a member o the long established and reputed

Iberostar group, and we have received excellent eedback and reviews due

The well-equipped rooms are o a good size and standard with many

All 276 rooms are set in bungalows within smart garden areas and are

When we say just metres rom Praia des Chaves were not exaggerating!

Many rooms open out onto the beach itsel, and the main body o the hotel

is just a ew short steps rom this quintessential Cape Verdean beach.

Were not overstating the peace and calm at Parque das Dunas either:its a genuine haven on this already quiet island.

The rooms here are simply urnished bungalows, all surrounded by

well-tended gardens o bougainvillea. The pool area sits adjacent to these

gardens and is fanked by sun loungers, with shaded areas provided by palm

trees. The bar and restaurant area is an inormal aair, with seating inside

and out where you can enjoy your avourite beverage and typical Cape

the rocks and provides a wonderful spot for some serious

he Marine Club is a quiet, attractive hotel set on a

hillside overlooking the bay o Carlotta.

This hotel provides some very good acilities, with a large pool area, a

massage suite, a daily activity programme, plus evening entertainment

where youll be able to hear the traditional sot melancholy o the Boa

Vistan mornas. The grounds are immaculately kept, with fowering

bougainvillea lining narrow cobbled lanes.

Marine Club benets rom good views o the beach at the ront o the hotel,

which can also be enjoyed rom the restaurant and bar. The wooden pier

that stretches out over the crystal clear water provides the perect place to

relax or or a pre-dinner aperiti. Meals are buet style and are taken in the

main restaurant. All rooms are simply urnished and scattered on the hillside

which makes this hotel unsuitable or the less mobile.

Youre also only a 20-minute walk rom the islands capital o Sal Rei with

its quiet squares, and ever-growing number o restaurants and bars, and

i youre eeling adventurous the hotel provides a shuttle bus service to a

Although the ocus o our accommodation tends to be on Sal and Boa Vista, we do eature hotels on So Vicente and

Santiago and wholeheartedly urge you to explore Santo Anto and Fogo or the more scenically spectacular side o the

Cape Verde islands. For extensive inormation on these islands, please visit the Cape Verde Experience website.

So Vicente and Santo AntoSo Vicente is rightly regarded as the cultural centre o the islands. In the

capital, Mindelo, youll nd excellent restaurants, ne old-style colonial

architecture and cobbled streets, plus the beating heart o Cape Verdes

extraordinary music scene. Youll hear the delicate melancholy o the

traditional mornas (as sung by the islands most amous daughter, Cesaria

Evoria), plus the more rantic unana. Music is everywhere in Mindelo an

its quite something to behold. Geographically, the island has a dramatic

mountainous interior, but like Sal and Boa Vista there isnt much in the wa

o greenery.

Santo Anto, however, does have a green interior and quite the most

spectacular sight it is too. There are precipitous peaks, jaw-dropping raviand dwellings clinging to the side o mountains with locals tending their

crops in terraced areas that look completely inaccessible. The drive acros

the mountains rom Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande in the north east o th

island is well worth the trip!

SantiagoSantiago is the largest and most developed island in the archipelago with

rich history, dramatic mountainous scenery and lively nightlie. We would

recommend a visit to the old capital o Cidade Velha (a UNESCO world

heritage site) and Forte Real de So Filipe the main slave trading point

between Europe, Arica and America. O an evening, Praia, the islands

modern capital, comes alive with music, which can be heard in most bars

and restaurants. The spectacular hinterland is superb or walking most o

which consist o nding a point in the centre o the island and ollowing a

ribeira or stream down to the coast.

FogoOne o the absolute highlights o any visit to Cape Verde is a trip to the

active volcanic crater on Fogo still smoking rom its last eruption in 1995

You can walk right into the crater itsel, and see evidence o the spectacul

ertile land at its heart, where the islanders grow coee and produce thei

own wine. So Filipe, the capital o Fogo, is a pretty town and the third

largest in Cape Verde. The buildings are o Portuguese design in pastel

colours with terracotta roos. Pretty squares, cobbled streets and plenty o

trees and fowering plant pots add to the vibrant colours on display.

overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and has a reputation

or being a very comortable hotel with a restaurant

resh catch o the day sh option. Although waiter service in general can be

slow in Cape Verde, in this particular restaurant it is well worth the wait.

The most practical way to reach the other islands eatured in our holidays is

by internal fights. These fights are provided by TACV (Cabo Verde Airlines)

and schedules can be changeable. Due to extra travelling involved, we dont

recommend this type o holiday or young children.

such a delay occurs, we will always do our best

to provide a snack or meal when appropriate.

Should there be an extended delay to your

homeward fight we will endeavour to delay your

departure rom your holiday accommodation,and in the case o an overnight delay, overnight

accommodation will be provided, although this

may not be your holiday accommodation.

A ull 10 year British passport is required or e

into Cape Verde, valid or at least 6 months at

nationals require a visa to enter Cape Verde

which are only issued at the point o entry.
