2. OLD BUSINESS a. PHMSA regarding what “High Strength Pipe” meant in Section 6.5.5. Discussions around this

and the task group will clean up the proposed wording and will present it to the subcommittee

THIS WAS REVIEWED LAST YEAR AND AGREED UPON BUT THE CHANGES NOTED BELOW IN RED

WERE WORD SMITHED. THESE CHANGES WILL BE ADDED INTO THE SECTION 6 REVISIONS WITH BILL

AMEND’S COMMITTEE

6.5.5 - First paragraph –

For the bend test, if any specimen shows imperfections that exceed those

allowed by 5.6.4.3 or 5.6.5.3, the welder shall be disqualified. Welds in high

strength pipe may not bend to the full U shape. Welds might Specimens may

not bend to the full U shape in the jig before breaking. If a break occurs during

the bending these welds specimens shall be considered acceptable if the

specimens that crack are broken apart and their exposed surfaces meet the

requirements of 5.6.3.3.

b. Material grouping chart be included in the API 1104. Mike Bernasek ([email protected])

presented a grouping chart (below) as a basis for review. The chart is not the refined version

but a basis to move forward on. There is concern from some members that the different SMYS

grouping such as X65 have multiple listing and may be confusing to users and could lead to

companies pushing for multiple qualification with in a group. Mike will take this task on with

the section 5 committee to alleviate these concerns plus refine the list.

Mike will work with Robert Lazor and looking for another participant to assist.

c. Table 1 is being revised. Jon Lee ([email protected]) is chairing this initiative. He gave

us an overview of the changes and will work with Luke Ludwig to stay in tune with

Section 5 changes.

Task group activity to date:

The task group met via conference call on a number of different occasions. The initial work of

the task group involved compiling essential variables from other similar welding standards

including AS/NZS 2885.2-2015, CSA Z662, DNV OS F101 and ASME B&PV Sec. IX. The group

then met over a series of meetings to discuss each essential variable identified from each

standard. Two key points were identified when evaluating each essential variable.

1. To be considered an essential variable for weld procedure development it needs to impact the mechanical properties of the weld. Items identified to impact production or welder skill requirements were determined to not be an essential variable for weld procedure development.

2. When reviewing an essential variable from other standards we need to continually check to ensure we are not adding two essential variables to address the same concern.

The essential variables that currently exist in section 5.4 were reviewed using the technical

knowledge of the group while referencing the approaches of other standards. The additional

essential variables from other standards were also considered for relevance and potential as

new essential variables for section 5.4.

During our evaluations it was identified that the work of the task group had considerable

synergies with the task group evaluating the essential variables within section 12. A meeting

was held to discuss a joint effort to address each essential variable. This was determined to be

necessary to ensure uniformity within the specification both from a technical perspective as

well as in formatting and style.

To split the work the essential variable task groups (5.4 and 12) have created 4 sub task groups

to tackle the essential variable groupings of materials, consumables, electrical characteristics

and method. There is also work as an oversight committee to establish criteria for layout and

format in order to ensure consistency.

Proposed changes

The following tables identify the possible improvements to some of the essential variables

currently in the specification and the additional essential variables that are identified to have

potential value within API 1104.

Changes to current essential variables:

Clause # Current wording Proposal 5.4.2.2 Base Material

A change in base material constitutes an essential variable. When welding materials of two separate material groups, the procedure for the higher strength group shall be used. For the purposes of this standard, all materials shall be grouped as follows.

Consider changing grouping to be:

A) SMYS ≤ 42 ksi B) SMYS > 42ksi but ≤ 70 ksi C) SMYS > 70 ksi

Page 4: Weld Procedure and Welder Qualification Subcommittee ...mycommittees.api.org/standards/api1104/Meeting Materials/2017... · Weld Procedure and Welder Qualification Subcommittee Minutes

a) SMYS less than or equal to that of the material specified as API 5L Grade X42; b) SMYS greater than that of the material specified as API 5L Grade X42 but less than that of the material specified as API 5L Grade X65; c) for materials with a SMYS greater than or equal to that of the material specified as API 5L Grade X65, each grade shall receive a separate qualification test.

Or

A) SMYS ≤ 70 ksi B) SMYS > 70 ksi

5.4.2.3 Joint Design

A major change in joint design (e.g. from V groove to U groove) constitutes an essential variable. Minor changes in the angle of bevel or the land of the welding groove are not essential variables.

Consider more definition to major vs. minor or ranges for each dimension

5.4.2.4 Position

A change in position from roll to fixed, or vice versa, constitutes an essential variable.

Remove the “and vice versa” to allow change from fixed to roll

5.4.2.5 Wall Thickness

A change from one specified wall thickness range to another constitutes an essential variable. Examples of suggested groupings are shown in 6.2.2 e).

Remove recommended ranges and provide actual qualification ranges used on that used during procedure qualification

5.4.2.6 Filler Metal

The following changes in filler metal constitute essential variables: a) a change from one filler metal group to another (see Table 1); b) for materials with a SMYS greater than or equal to that of the material specified as API 5L Grade X65, a change in the AWS classification of the filler metal (see 5.4.2.2). Changes in filler metal within filler metal groups may be made within the material groups specified in 5.4.2.2. The compatibility of the base material and the filler metal should be considered from the standpoint of mechanical properties.

1. Consider making E9010 its own group 2. Consider adding greater than 90 ksi 3. Add EXX45 4. Consider removing SAW consumables (section 12)

5.4.2.7 Electrical Characteristics

A change from direct current (DC) electrode positive to DC electrode negative, or vice versa, or a change in current from DC to alternating current (AC), or vice versa, constitutes an essential variable.

Address waveform controlled processes somehow. Likely by adding additional essential variables. Align with section 12

5.4.2.8 Time Between Passes

An increase in the maximum time between completion of the root bead and the start of the second bead constitutes an essential variable.

Consider limiting only to non-low hydrogen processes/consumables

5.4.2.9 Direction of welding

A change in the direction of welding from vertical downhill to vertical uphill, or vice versa, constitutes an essential variable.

Consider adding clarification regarding 2G and other positions

5.4.2.10 A change from one shielding gas to another or Ensure consistency with section 12

Page 5: Weld Procedure and Welder Qualification Subcommittee ...mycommittees.api.org/standards/api1104/Meeting Materials/2017... · Weld Procedure and Welder Qualification Subcommittee Minutes

Shielding gas and flow rate

from one mixture of gases to another constitutes an essential variable. An increase or decrease in the range of flow rates for the shielding gas greater than 20 % of the nominal flow rate also constitutes an essential variable.

5.4.2.11 Shielding Flux

This clause points to a the footnote in table 1 stating: “Any combination of flux and electrode in Group 4 may be used to qualify a procedure. The combination is identified by its complete AWS classification number, such as F70A0-EL 12 or F6A2-EM12K. Only substitutions that result in the same AWS classification number are permitted without requalification”

Consider removing this to be covered by section 12.

5.4.2.12 Speed of Travel

A change in the range for speed of travel constitutes an essential variable.

Consider limiting this requirement for a maximum when using cellulose coated electrodes and a minimum when roll welding

5.4.2.13 Preheat

A decrease in the specified minimum preheat temperature constitutes an essential variable.

Add reference to temperature of base material recorded during procedure qualification. Consider allowing the greater of a hard minimum or a certain value less than that recorded.

5.4.2.14 PWHT

The addition of PWHT or a change from the ranges or values specified in the procedure each constitutes an essential variable.

Consider adding additional requirements to define the allowable ranges. Consider adding clarification that Post heating is not the same as PWHT. Consider method of PWHT.

Proposed additional essential variables:

Variable Reasoning Base material steel source manufacturer

For SMYS greater than 70 ksi where HAZ softening might be a concern.

Base material Carbon Equivalent

Potentially when Cellulose coated electrodes are used. Maybe only on higher grades where HACC is a higher risk.

Actual filler metal classification outside of the groupings in Table 1

Consider as a supplemental essential variable for when toughness is a requirement

Use of and composition of backing shielding gas

Make the addition or deletion an essential variable Composition is an essential variable when welding on clad or alloy materials

Heat input or burn off rate Supplemental when toughness is a requirement

GMAW transfer mode A change from spray arc, globular arc or pulsating arc to short circuiting arc and vice versa due to potential for cold lap and impact to

mechanical properties

Welding equipment type When using waveform controlled processes

Interpass temperature Clarify that minimum interpass is considered minimum preheat.

Multiple to single pass per side Consider for backwelding

Backing and backing Material Consider addition or deletion of backing or change of backing material (e.g. from copper to ceramic). Clarify difference between weld metal or base material backing.

Sequence of deposition of different consumables

Consider addition of sequence to 5.4.2.1 for hydrogen concerns. Especially consider implication to backwelding

Number of welders Consider any decrease in number of welders for welding of root and hot pass when using cellulose coated electrodes because of HACC

Method and/or rate of cooling change in post-weld cooling method and intensity, or rate of cooling

Post heating: Hydrogen release Any reduction in the time and temperature and deletion but not addition of post heating.

Additional Considerations:

Both task groups have identified considerations that would significantly change the appearance

of API 1104 and thus need significant consideration before proceeding. First was the

identification of a need for “supplementary” or “situational” essential variables. Second was the

need to better differentiate between specified variables and essential variables (section 5.3 vs.

section 5.4). The combination of these issues has resulted in consideration of a proposal to use

a tabular format for the essential variables in section 5.4 and Section 12.

e. Remaining sections in Section 5 Task Group –

There was no progress on this section. Brian will work with the group but needs

another person to chair it.

API 1104 Section 6 Edits

1

A high level summary….

Page 23: Weld Procedure and Welder Qualification Subcommittee ...mycommittees.api.org/standards/api1104/Meeting Materials/2017... · Weld Procedure and Welder Qualification Subcommittee Minutes

Summary of Key Proposed Changes

6.1

– Define “segment”

6.2

– Establish limits for use of segments

– Specified direction of vertical progression does not prohibit moving start/stop location to prevent stacking of stops/starts

– Address qualification of welders who test by making less than full thickness weld

– Address Annex B qualified welders; testing to Section 6 not an additional requirement

– Address welders who test using combination of processes for test. Making production weld with one process is allowed under some conditions

– Clarify that change in vertical progression is a change in essential variable

– Change thickness range limits to include secondary consideration of a multiple of the test thickness that supersedes the established upper end of thickness group

Summary of Key Proposed Changes (cont.)

2.2 cont.

– Define positions qualified based on branch test position

– Define “major change” in joint design to equal the new Section 5 definition

6.3

– Eliminate “first test/second test” in favor of “in one test/in the other test” to eliminate implied required sequence

– Add clarification that the welder must weld all passes in the test joint

– Specifically describe brother-in-law welding of test sections

– Reduce minimum diameter of test section to 2.375 in. from 6.625in.

6.4

– All dimensional requirements of the WPS to be met

– Undercut limits defined by Section 9.7 and Table 4

– Company to define excessive protruding GMAW wires
