Its Broke, You Are Not At some point in the late aſternoon or early evening, the air condioner at our house quit working. Yes, it is under warranty and we shouldnt be out anything to have it repaired. And I had the service call made by 7:15 AM this morning, so the unit should be back in service in less than 24 hours of its failure. But there is no denying that we were miserable last night. All day yesterday the temperature was well into the 90’s and the feels liketemperature was, at one point, 110. That is hot. Ceiling fans were not a big help. They only tend to act like the circulang fan of a convecon oven. At 11:00 PM I leſt the house and went in search of more fans. I drove into town to see if I had one squirreled away at the office, but I didnt. I drove all over old Magnolia just in case a new Walmart was open and ready to sell me a fan. Turns out, we sll dont have a Walmart in town. Not even an old one. Things had not improved a bit when I got back home. A cold shower was a temporary respite, but it wasnt long before the repressive heat was the all-consuming thought of our conscious- ness. At three AM I was lying in bed and wondering why this was such a miserable feeling. Ive been in the sub-Saharan regions of west Africa a number of mes for as long as a month at a me. I ve done week long snts in the southern Caribbean for evan- gelisc campaigns and lectureships in mid-July. This present inconvenience should not have been so difficult to bear, but yet it was. For more than a hundred years people have lived here and thrived at a me when refrigerated air condioning was unheard of. Have I really goen so soſt? Probably, but there is another contribung factor. In fact, I would say it s the most significant factor of all. Our home, less than a year old, was designed to be an aircondioned home. There is no place for an ac fan. Rooms do not have windows on opposing walls for air circulaon. No towering shade trees offer dayme relief. The simple truth is this – we live in a house that was designed to be comfortable only as long as its heang and cooling systems work. When they dont, there are no backup systems. Our world is much the same way. Sin and its corrupon are the key reasons why life is so burdensome. We live with the pre- sent reality of locking doors, shuered windows and high fences to shut off our possessions from the greedy eyes of covetous people. We are not so naïve as to think that all people are kind and compassionate. Our naons constuon actually protects our right to bear arms in the defense of our homes. We dont reveal, we dont share, we dont trust, and we dont assume - because ours is a sinful world where evil is a constant danger. We were not designed for this. We need expert help. And for the child of God, peace and comfort are but a prayer away. Hope and inspiraon are found within the pages of our Bibles. The next me the brokenness of our world makes your nights sleepless and your days filled with worry and anxiety, remember that its not your tolerance level that is the issue. You werent designed for a sin filled environment. Yet there is reason for joy. Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrecon of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Pt. 1:3). Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplicaon with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, breth- ren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and re- ceived and heard and seen in me, pracce these things, and the God of peace will be with you (Philippians 4:6-9). DC Brown

Welcome! It’s Broke, You Are Not

At some point in the late afternoon or early evening, the air conditioner at our house quit working. Yes, it is under warranty and we shouldn’t be out anything to have it repaired.
