Welcome and Call to Worship Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland Rev. David W. Johnson

*Processional Hymn "I Sing the Mighty Power of God" Ellacombe

*Litany Gina Hodges

One: In the days of our beginning, there was earth and sky. All: The earth was ready to burst forth with life, waiting for just the right moment. One: And then it happened! God breathed life into our world. All: With the breath of God, humans became living beings and the earth became a garden, bearing

fruit and bursting with beauty. One: We are created to care for God's garden. All: We join with God and all humanity to cultivate and care for our earth. One: Let us pray...

*Unison Prayer of Confession Gina Hodges

Masterful God, creator of all we see and all we are, we give thanks for this beautiful, productive, life-giving earth with which we have been blessed. We give thanks for the fruits and grains that supply our tables with food, and this communion table with spiritual food. Forgive us when take your amazing gift for granted and overlook the beauty that surrounds us, squander the resources You have given, or fail to consider the needs of future generations. Let the table you set for us today, remind us that we are forgiven, and that you have given us a new beginning. Amen

Attending to God's Word

Antiphonal Reading of the Psalter Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland Rev. David W. Johnson

Psalm 104:14-24

Truax

Cantor and Congregation

You cause the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for people to use, to bring forth food from the earth, and wine to gladden the human heart, oil to make the face shine, and bread to strengthen the human heart. The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. In them the birds build their nests; the stork has its home in the fir trees. The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the badgers.

Cantor and Congregation

You have made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting. You make darkness, and it is night, when all the animals of the forest come creeping out. The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God. When the sun rises, they withdraw and lie down in their dens. People go out to their work and to their labor until the evening. O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

Cantor and Congregation

A Reading from The Old Testament Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland Rev. Elizabeth B. Johnson

One: The stories of our origin call us to our purpose. All: We listen and look to God for purpose and direction.

Genesis 2:4b-8 In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground— then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there God put the man whom God had formed.

Response

One: God breathed life into us that we might tend God's world. All: It is our privilege and joy to be caretakers in God's garden.

Anthem "Let All Creation Dance" James Biery

Community Quartet Chancel Choir

Let all creation dance in energies sublime, as order turns with chance, unfolding space and time, for nature's art in glory grows, in glory grows, and newly shows God's mind and heart.

God's breath each force unfurls, igniting from a spark expanding starry swirls, with whirlpools dense and dark. Though moon and sun seem mindless things, each orbit sings: "Your will be done."

Our own amazing earth, with sunlight, cloud and storms, and life's abundant growth in lovely shapes and forms, is made for praise, a fragile whole, and from its soul heaven's music plays, music plays.

Lift heart and soul and voice: in Christ all praises meet and nature shall rejoice as all is made complete. In hope be strong, all life befriend, and kindly tend creation's song.

Sermon "The Lord God Planted a Garden" Rev. Joshua J. Longbottom

"...and there God put the man whom God had formed." Genesis 2:8b

Musical Offering "Récit de Cromorne" Francois Couperin

Distribution Music "Let us Break Bread Together" arr. Craig Carnaham

Community Quartet Chancel Choir

Let us break bread together on our knees; Let us break bread together on our knees.

When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun, O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us drink wine together on our knees; Let us drink wine together on our knees.

When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun, O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us praise God together on our knees; Let us praise God together on our knees.

When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun, O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us break bread together, let us drink wine together, Let us praise God together on our knees.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord's Prayer (Sung)

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen

"Elements of Faith" Summer Preaching Series: It is easy to see the wonder of God's creation all

around us and during the summer months we hope to deepen our appreciation of the incredible design, organization, and the creativeness of God. By delving into the elements that make up our world, we offer an opportunity to celebrate the power, wisdom, order, and ingenuity of our Creator. Join us this summer as we cultivate our understanding of the earth, fire, water, wind, light, and stars.

Jazz Vespers: A Contemporary Riff on an Ancient Prayer Service. Jazz Vespers began in New York City in the 1960s as a concept worship service and outreach ministry It was designed as a service of prayer and jazz for folks who couldn't make it to Sunday morning services after playing late night gigs on Saturday night.

In this tradition, our jazz vespers service is an eclectic mix of prayer, spoken verse, ambient art, and live jazz. Through these elements, we walk through an ancient service of prayer (vespers) in a creative, informal, and multisensory way. Please join us for our first Jazz Vespers worship "Praise for all things created" on Sunday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the church courtyard.

C2 Worship: Join us for a sneak-peek service on Sunday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. in Community Hall. C2 will return to Sunday worship beginning September 12 at 10:30 a.m.
