Welcome to this little introduction on how to give technical presentations. I hope you will find it useful. The presentation is meant for relative beginners even though even seasoned presenters may find something new in it. Naturally, we don't touch all topics and some only superficially. But once you are aware of some basic ideas you can start a spiral of self improvement. Note that none of the basic ideas in these slides are novel or invented by me. Alignment isparticularlyimportant;itgivesstructureandordertoaslide(oranygraphicaldesign).Interestingly,centeraligmentusuallylooksweakandunsophisticated.AsabasicruleIsuggestthatyoualignleftifindoubt(alsoappliestotablesBTW).Tryit!Beyondthattrytoalignmostelementsonaslidetosomethingelse.

Contrastmeansthatiftwoelementsaremeanttolookdifferent,makethemreallydifferent.Forexample,lookatthetitleandmyname.Thefontsdifferinbothweightandsizewhichmakesitlookvisuallyappealing.Trythesamewithonlysizeoronlyweightchanged;itwilllookworse.Asageneralrule,contrastinfontsisachievedbychangingatleasttwoattributesamongweight,size,color,andfonttype.

Thisisamorevisualslidedesignedtoconveythesamecontent.

Thedisadvantageisthatnowyouhavetorememberwhattosay.However,ifyoudon't,youarebadlypreparedanyway.

Thebigadvantageisthatpeoplewillhavemoretimelisteningsincetheyarenotbusyreading(thereisabiologicalreasonforthis,explainedlater).Equallyimportant,thevisualsmaketheslidemuchmoreinteresting.Sopeoplearelesslikelytoreturntotheirlaptops.Thisisanimportantgoal,inparticularonthefirstfewslides.

Onthecontent:Presentationsareauniquechancetoconnectyourworkwithyourperson.Ifyoudoagoodjob,peoplemayrememberyou,whichisparticularlyimportantinanytypeofjob(academia:atonepointyouneedreferenceletters;industry:atonepointajobuptheladderwillopenupandtheywillonlyconsiderthepeopletheyremember).Unfortunately,mostpresentationsfallfarshortofthisgoalandareratherawasteoftimeformostoftheaudience.Thisisyourchance:learnhowtodoitwellandyouhaveanedge!

Thebottompartconveysthatcontentandvisualqualityareequallyimportant.Andtheyare.Notethatslidesthatcommunicatewellarealsobeautiful.Thisimplies(everhadalogicsclass?)thatuglyslideswillnotcommunicatewell.

Ontherightweshowadifferentmodel:HSL(hue,saturation,lumniosity).Hgivestherainbowspectrum,thex‐axisabove.Sgivesthesturation,they‐axisabove.Thefullysaturatedcolorsareallontop.Allcolorsfromthepreviousslidearefullysaturated.Afullydesaturated colorisgray.Listheluminosityorbrightness,thez‐axissotosayandshownbythesliderontheright.

Ifyouwantacolorchooseitontop(oronthepreviousscreen),sayred,switchtoHSLmode,andthendesaturate it.Thenadjustluminosityandfinetune.

Alignment:Don'trandomlyplaceelements.Mostshouldbealignedtosomething.Ifindoubt,tryfirstleftalignment.

Contrast: Ifyouwantthatelementslookdifferentmakethemsufficientlydifferent.Forfontschangeatleasttwoattributes.Withcolorsplayaround.E.g.,warmagainstcold,darkagainstbrightgivesgoodcontrast.

Layeringmeansthatineveryvisualyoudecidewhichelemnts shouldbeintheforground anddesignaccordingly.Lesserimportantelementsyouputinthebackground,e.g.,bymakingthemforexamplegrayorbrightorboth.

Consistencymeansthatsimilarelementsshouldbedesignedsimilarly.Forexample,usethesamefontthroughoutthetalk.Youmaybreaktheprincipleforemphasis.
