Winter Newsletter 2018 Welcome to the Winter Newsletter 2018 is passing by rapidly with the shortest day of the year a few weeks ago. The past 12 months has presented some very challenging seasonal conditions which have taken some creative management. We can not change the cards we have been dealt with the season but our commitment to producing good genetics has continued on the same as normal. We consider the investment in retaining and maintaining reliable profitable genetics will be a large benefit in the future when things improve. As part of this commitment we have undertaken large Artificial Insemination programs and Embryo Programs to increase the rate of genetic improvement in the herd. The success of this was evident with the number of calves weaned from cows joined to AI being 79%. This direction has allowed us to use some of the best proven genetics in the breed to meet our breeding goals of breeding highly efficient, profitable maternal and eating quality traits. Then by backing up our AI program with yearling bulls selected for their balanced set of EBV’s and phenotype is adding value to every joining. www.futurityshorthorns.com Making the Cattle Better We are very fortunate to be working with several commercial producers to collect data on progeny of our elite young sires. These sires have been used in Artificial Insemination and natural matings across a number of herds. Data is being collected from steers going through the JBS Thousand Guineas program. Data is being collected for calving ease, growth and carcase data. This information along with the DNA will be fed back into Breedplan and help develop and identify markers for traits in genomics for the Shorthorn Breed. The benefits of this data being submitted and tested will greatly enhance the accuracy of current performance data of breeding stock. Winter Newsletter 2018Welcome to the Winter Newsletter

2018 is passing by rapidly with the shortest day of the year a few weeks ago.

Making the Cattle BetterWe are very fortunate to be working with several commercial producers to collect data on progeny of our elite young sires.

In the futrue this will allow us to be able to DNA test younger animals and know what they will produce.

This genetic progression will enhance not only the quality of breeding stock but also the profitability of stock for producers

Save the Date: Bull WalkWednesday 1st August

Inspection of Sale Bulls 11am - 5pm

Information WorkshopThe unrelenting dry has placed a great deal of pressure on producers in our area and across large parts of Australia. After many discussions with other producers we felt the need to inform people on some practical tips to help manage the challenges and were approached by the Local Land Services to host a Workshop.

We were surprised by the response with over 70 local livestock producers attending the Drought Information Workshop held at here in June.

Jillian Kelly Central West LLS Vet presented some great information on animal nutritional needs relating it in real terms for producers to implement.

On many occasions producers will feed what they have always fed or what they may have herd about over the boundary fence. The feed many not be meeting the nutritional requirements of the animal or you may be over feeding which will be costing you money.

There is now a feed calculator App available to download or you can access it on the NSW DPI website - www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/animals-and-livestock/nutrition/costs-and-nutritive-value/feed-cost-calculator

The following list of contacts are of people who are able to help with some practical advice on financial planning and analysis of your business, animal nutritional needs, feeding options, and looking after yourself.

Artificial Insemination

Artificial Insemination has been used for many years to cost effectively access elite genetics.

If you are considering using AI in your program a useful webinar to watch is one produced by Repro360 on precision breeding.

We attended this session at BEEF 2018 in Rockhamption earlier this year and it was very informative on setting your females up for a productive breeding future.
