Common Cow-wheat - Melampyrum pratense Description Soil regimes Common cow-wheat is a small plant up to 30cm tall with a square stem and opposite narrow leaves that reach 10cm long. The white-yellow flowers grow in pairs and distinctively both face in the same direction. Common cow-wheat can be seen from May to September in dry, very acidic soils in woodland communities W11 and 17. The plant also be seen in heathland.
