Ask the Pastor

Someone asked me about the saying “Love the sinner and hate the sin”; is that in

the Bible, how do we do that, are we supposed to do that? While I was working

on a response I came across an ar#cle from Living Lutheran (from June 2015)

about adages, proverbs, sayings that help us simplify the complexity of life. I post-

ed the answer to that ques#on already (September 2016) But I would like to share

the ar#cle’s responses to some other popular adages. The author’s name is posted

at the end.

“They didn’t die in vain”

From community vigils where we gather to pray and grieve when someone

has been murdered, to charity runs inspired by cancer vicms, to naons

direcng military policy spurred by the deaths of heroes, my stomach churns

when someone urges us to act in the memory of our beloved dead so they

will not have “died in vain.”

I share the grief that urges survivors to more and be er works of service. Par-

ents never want another child to suffer in the way theirs did from cancer.

Soldiers want to fight on so their comrades’ sacrifice is not in vain. We hate

the suffering and death that has come to our neighbors and naon. We must

do something to redeem their deaths from meaninglessness.

I’ve also come to understand that nothing I do — or all of us do together —

will ever be able to make good the deaths of our beloved. Grieved parents

can work for the rest of their lives to end cancer, but they know that not all

the work in the world will equal the life of their dear child. An enre town

can mobilize to prevent more murders, but we know the dead are dead.

Yet let us cling to God in Jesus Christ, who is victorious over sin and death. No

work but God’s can redeem our beloved’s death. Instead of vain a empts to

make right the senselessness of sin and death, in Christ our works become

praise for the one who truly brings life out of death. “Therefore, my beloved,

be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because

you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

– Michael Wilker

If you would like to submit a queson for “Ask the Pastor”, Biblical, theological, church

related, anything you have been dying to ask a pastor, you can hand me a note, ask me a(er

church, send an e-mail, or sneak into the church a(er dark and anonymously slide a sealed

envelope under my office door. If I answer your queson in print, I will not include your name

Week of February 4

1 Timothy 6

Godliness with contentment is great gain. We brought nothing into the world, and can carry nothing out. If we have food and clothes, we should be content. The love of money is the root of all evil. Pursue instead righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.

Week of February 11

2 Timothy 1

Stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. God has not given us a spirit of fear. Paul invites Timothy to share his sufferings. Paul’s and Timothy’s holy call is not according to their works, but to the purpose and grace of God.

Week of February 18

2 Timothy 2

Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Spread the word among the faithful. Endure hard-ship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. As in athletics, one must compete according to set rules. One must also be hard-working, like a farmer. Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to the gospel.

Week of February 25

2 Timothy 3

All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. You must persist in the truth. All scripture is divinely inspired, and profitable for doctrine, reproof and instruction.

Week of March 4

2 Timothy 4 Paul charges Timothy by Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom, to preach the word; convince, rebuke, exhort. Be watchful, endure afflictions, and fulfil your ministry. Paul is already being poured out as a drink offering. He has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.

FEBRUARY SERVICE EVENTS

Our Year of Service event for February is working with

Feed My Starving Children (a Chrisan non-profit that

provides nutrionally complete meals specifically formu-

lated for malnourished children).

On February 2, from 9a to 12 we will gather at the UT

Physical Educaon Building (1820 Stadium Drive,

Toledo) to help them make ‘meal kits’, i.e. hand-pack

rice, soy, dried vegetables and a nutrionally complete

blend of vitamins and minerals into bags which are then

sealed, boxed, placed on pallets and shipped to their partners around the world. If you

would like to volunteer, there is a signup sheet near Pastor O’Brien’s office door. If you would

like to support the organizaon, but are unable to volunteer, donaons can be made on-line

h ps://give.fmsc.org/fundraiser/1792932 (Anna Mazur is helping us coordinate the

event). If you prefer to send a check, send it to Feed My Starving Children, 401 93rd Avenue

NW, Coon Rapids, MN 55433

ENPUZZLEMENT

Our 2nd February Year of Service event will be helping at and

learning about the ministry at EnPuzzlement on February 19th

at 3:00 PM. EnPuzzlement, located near Execuve Field in

Millbury, is a non-profit organizaon that makes the connecon

between donaons from corporate America and small, local,

non-profit charies who serve the community. Many large com-

panies have the ability to donate significant resources, but small

organizaons do not have the ability to receive them or even ac-

cess them. EnPuzzlement helps to bridge this gap. We will be

meeng to learn more about their ministry and to help them

process donaons.

There is a sign-up sheet next to Pastor O’Brien’s office door for those who are interested.

Our Seven Faith Practices

What’s left on the 13th Day of Christmas??

My Journey …. …...From Matthew Milbrodt

Life at Trinity/Capital My experiences here at seminary are different in some way compared to my sister and brother-in-law. I cannot exactly speak on how things were at Trinity prior to last spring when the merger with Capital University was completed. Based on things that I have heard from the current second-year students, there have been occasional “technical glitches” however things are otherwise as they were before. I have not experienced any-thing severe myself.

Some things have changed recently. The dormitories within the Trinity complex now house Capital undergraduates as do the old “brown” apartments across Main Street. The houses and small apartment buildings along Sheridan Avenue now house the entirety of the on-campus Trinity population. I am in an older but comfortable house with three good house-mates; a foreign theology student from Hungry (staying for one year), a first-year law student, and his cat.

Thanks to the merger with Capital, there are a number of perks that Trinity could not offer on it’s own. There is a range of student meal plans available now, which are incredibly handy to help me stay off the high-sodium “grad student Ramen” diet. I am working two work-study positions, which gives me barely enough money to pay my insurance premiums and almost nothing else, so the ability to get one cafeteria-style meal a day and eat a fresh salad is an absolute blessing. Additionally, fit-ness centers and the Blackmore Library are open to Trinity stu-dent use.

The student population of Trinity has shrunk. This fall’s incoming class has eight full-time students, myself included. A couple of this year’s students are not on campus and either doing online classes or something else. I am currently the only on-campus declared Master of Divinity student, which is the educational path to take to become an ELCA pastor, however there is one other student who is hopeful to be able to switch to this path. Last year’s incoming class was about fifteen on-

campus students, about twelve of which are on the M-Div path. The two previous classes, with M-Div students currently out on internship, were about the same size.

With the small size of the student population, everyone gets to know everyone else. There are a number of regularly occurring student fellowship and involvement events, with one of the main ones being the weekly “Common Meal,” a tradition that has continued on from previous years. Some of the long-

time Trinity professors have commented that they noticed an increase sense of comradery with this small sized school. Addi-tionally, because of the small size, there are a couple of clas-ses that contain nearly the entire student population, allowing everyone to interact with one another in an educational setting.

Overall, my first semester’s experiences at Trinity Lu-theran Seminary (at Capital University, to state the full title) has been hard but educational and excellent. Academically, there

were a few classes that seemed familiar and “standard,” and there were also classes that presented unique challenges. I will be discussing the classes that I took in the next installment.

Classes

I have taken six classes for my first semester, totaling 16 credit hours.

Greek - Normally, an incoming student might take Greek as an intensive class the summer prior to seminary. This is where an entire year’s worth of information is given to them over the span of a few weeks. Since I did not do this, I will be taking Greek in a more traditional setting my entire first year. This is my most challenging course this semester. The final assignment will be some sort of translation project.

Church History 1 - The historical story of Christianity, from the Resurrection and age of the apostles to the Later Mid-dle Ages just prior to Martin Luther. Assignments focus on criti-cal thinking about historical events and how they relate to the church we have today. The study of the Ecumenical Councils was a large part of the semester.

New Testament 1 - Biblical study of the books of the Gospels and Acts, as well as historical context, sources, au-thors, and different forms of looking at the Bible. The instructor is experimenting with online assignments with a goal of the stu-dents elucidating aspects of different passages and chapters. My final semester project was a study making analogies be-tween The Holy Trinity as explained in the Gospels and con-cepts in Theoretical Physics.

Person In Ministry - A class allowing the student to think about their own gifts and areas of improvement, as well as presenting psychological concepts to examples of people they might encounter in a ministry career. Assignments here includ-ed a study of my own family history and a number of self-reflection papers.

Christian/Muslim Relations - A historical context class meant to show how Muslims and Christians have interacted over time, both positive and negative. The assignments here were focused on showing what the instructor defined as the “ambivalent relationship.”

Leadership In Context - This is a class that places stu-dents in a church in Columbus so that they practice doing vari-ous minor things, watch and report to a full-time pastor, and gain experience. My placement is Gethsemane Lutheran Church near Worthington and I have been able to be the sec-ondary worship leader a number of times.

For the spring semester, I will most likely be taking 18 credit hours worth of classes, which would include continua-tions of History, New Testament, and Greek, as well as Intro-duction to Worship, and (conversational) Spanish for Ministry. Additionally, for the January-term, I will be taking class called Rural Ministry, which will partly be a study on the professor’s hometown of Upper Sandusky. I am looking forward to this class in particular.

Thank you for your continued support! Matt

2019 Year of Scripture Sneak Peek

2019 will be the Year of Scripture in the Northwestern Ohio Synod. What follows is a quick outline of Coming Attractions.

The Year of Scripture will have a 3-fold focus:

1. Bible Reading as a daily discipline and habit

2. Bible Reflection to help us become fluent in the language of sacred scripture

3. Bible Study: to lead us to discover the depths of who God is and the breadth of what God does.

Our Year of Scripture Memory Verse is Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”.

The bible study based on the “Sermon on the Mount” is NOW available on the NWOS Website.

http://nwos-elca.church/resources/bishops-writings/bible/matthew-bible-study

Bishop Beaudoin wants to encourage and challenge you to join with the rest of the Northwestern Ohio Synod and read through the

entire Bible in One Year. Back in 2004 and 2012, the parishes he was serving read through the Bible in One Year as a community spiritual practice. Scripture is meant to be read in community,

so please don’t do this alone.

August 15th through the 2st. we will be staying at Our Sav-ior’s Lutheran Church on the Rocky Boy Reservation near Box Elder, Montana. About a half hour from Havre and an hour and a half from Great Falls. They will tailor the work to the skills of the group, so there will be work for everyone. The Pancake Dinner will be March 5th.

Christian Community Life: Pancake Dinner will be held on March 5.

Evangelism: The two new nominated members along with Beverly Harder and Margaret Berger attended the last Committee Night. The committee members delivered 22 poinsettias to our shut-in members and a couple friends of the congregation. It was very enjoyable delivering and visiting with recipients. Dan Berger has undecorated the tree and disposed of the tree. Projects for 2019 were reviewed.

Parish Education: Super Bowl Sunday proceeds will go to the Genoa Food Pantry. Buckets will be passed dur-ing the services similar to the noisy offering.

Board of Stewardship Report: Will work on time and talents and the monthly volunteering Year of Service op-portunities. Looking forward to the opportunities to draw in younger people.

Worship Life: The committee will have four mem-bers this year after spending 2018 a member short. Major point of discussion was concerning our Christmas Eve Service schedule. Attendance at the 4:00 service and the late service continue to be strong. However, attend-ance at the 7:00 service has continued to decline. It has declined to the point that the committee felt a responsibil-ity to consider making some changes. With the entire committee present, and after getting agreement from our late service organist, it was decided to have Christmas Eve service at 4;00 and 10:00 beginning this year. Per the con-stitution, a change in times and services must be approved by the congregation. The council approved for this issue to be brought up under new business at the annual meet-ing. A new CD duplicator has been purchased and installed for making copies of services for those in need. We are also plan arranging for worship leaders on the Len-ten Worship schedule in advance.

Property: repor ted that the rubber roof will be pre-sented at the annual meeting. The Property committee has tried to consider any possible issues that may arise with roof replacement. Hopefully, there will be no unseen is-sues. Financial figures will be presented at the annual meeting.

Old business: Weather issues where discussed. Church will be closed during a level 3.

Next Committee Night is scheduled for Thursday February 14, 2019 at 7:00pm. Next Council Meeting is scheduled for Thursday February 21, 2019 at 7:00 pm.

Respectively submitted, Marcia Morgan, Council Secretary
