What is global warming?

• Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate.

• A warmer Earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans.

• When scientists talk about the issue of climate change, their worry is about global warming caused by human activities, such as:

• Leaving electrics on.• Driving vehicles.• Getting food from foreign

countries.

What causes global warming?

• Global warming happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapour, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature.

• This hurts many people, animals, and plants. Many cannot take the change, so they die.

• Many things cause global warming. • One thing that causes global warming is electrical

pollution. • Electricity causes pollution in many ways, some worse than

others. • In most cases, fossil fuels are burned to create electricity. • Fossil fuels are made of dead plants and animals.

What is global warming doing to the environment?

• Global warming is affecting many parts of the world.

• Global warming makes the sea rise, and when the sea rises, the water covers many low land islands- animals’ habitats.

• Although animals have a better ability to adapt to what happens than plants do, they may also die.

• When the plants and animals die, people lose two sources of food, plant food and animal food.

• Animals may also lose their homes. As a result, they would also have to leave the area or die. This would be called a break in the food chain, or a chain reaction, one thing happening that leads to another and so on.

Food Miles

• According to sustainable Agriculture, fresh food is hauled an average of 1500 to 2500 miles from farm to table which is 25% farther than in 1980.

• The concept of food miles is part of the broader issue of sustainability which deals with a large range of environmental issues, including local food. The term was coined by Tim Lang (now professor of food policy, city university, London.)

Food Miles Facts

• If you buy a pizza from Italy your food is travelling approximately, 890 miles to get to your table.

• In the UK, our food travels an amazing 30 billion kilometres a year. This includes imports by boat and air as well as transport by lorries and cars.

• Food transport is responsible for the UK adding nearly 19 million tonnes of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere each year. Over 2 million tonnes of this product simple by cars travelling to and from shops.

How you can help?

• The individual consumer can make a difference right away, by simply walking to local shops, when possible, and buying fresh ingredients to cook at home.

Thank you for watching!

RECYCLING

• Its important to recycle because it saves you having not to cut down any trees.

• It is also important to recycle your products so we don’t use up our wasteland.
