Welcome to the Academic Skills Cloud on IBM SmartCloud Enterprise Welcome to the Academic Skills Cloud Delivering IBM software for teaching purposes through an automated, virtual, self-service environment: IBM SmartCloud Enterprise In 2010, IBM announced a new Academic Skills Cloud (ASC) offering, a pilot program to Academic Initiative members at 20 colleges and universities across the United States. In 2011, the ASC doubled usage in the US and expanded to more than 10 countries. The pilot is being extended to additional countries and schools in IBM's global network of Academic Initiative partners, which includes 9,000 faculty members at more than 4,500 universities worldwide. Members participating in the ASC pilot have access to IBM Cognos®, DB2®, Informix®, Lotus®, Rational®, Tivoli®, and WebSphere® software on IBM SmartCloud Enterprise. There are plans to add additional software to the cloud catalog over time. IBM is making this offering available to you at no charge through the Academic Initiative program. As you use the cloud, you will see the cost of the various images you are using. IBM is covering this cost. Neither you, nor your school, will be billed. We recognize that the cloud is new to many of you. Please be advised there is a Support forum available on line and monitored 24 hours a day, Monday-Friday EST. You do not need to log into the ASC to access the Support forum. In the Support section , we’ve outlined some addi- tional helpful resources. Depending on how you leverage the cloud in your curriculum, your students may or may not require access to provision images directly through the account cloud portal, and therefore they may not require individual access to the account we have created for your school. For example, if your curriculum involves the Rational suite of products, or perhaps Cognos – you can provision an instance of these popular products and then provide your students with access by sharing the IP address assigned to the instance in the cloud. In these cases, you will not need to request access for your students to the cloud portal. Should your use of the cloud involve the students provisioning instances themselves, please refer to the section How to add and remove student IDs to and from your account . Please be considerate. There is high demand for this offering. To ensure there is enough capacity to allow as many students to experience this offering as possible, please be sure to, and remind your students to, shut down your running instances when they are not needed. You can create private images to save your work, and shut down the running instance. The section How to save your instances as private images outlines how to do that. The Academic Skills Cloud is a unique opportunity to help you learn about cloud computing and bring these skills to your students. We are pleased to be able to offer this to you at no charge and look forward to your feedback. Welcome to the Academic Skills Cloud on IBM SmartCloud Enterprise

Welcome to the Academic Skills Cloud Delivering IBM software for teaching purposes through an automated, virtual,

self-service environment: IBM SmartCloud Enterprise

In 2010, IBM announced a new Academic Skills Cloud (ASC) offering, a pilot program to Academic Initiative members at 20 colleges and universities across the United States.

In the Support section, we’ve outlined some addi-tional helpful resources.

Should your use of the cloud involve the students provisioning instances themselves, please refer to the section How to add and remove student IDs to and from your account. Sincerely, IBM Academic Initiative Team Skills for a smarter planet

Welcome to the Academic Skills Cloud on IBM SmartCloud Enterprise

A word about costs and licensing Normally offered for a fee to our customers and partners, IBM SmartCloud Enterprise is availa-ble to Academic Initiative members and their students at no charge through our Academic Skills Cloud pilot offering.

As agreed to in the Academic Initiative Program Agreement and Addendum for IBM SmartCloud Enterprise Services, you are eligible to use the following licensing options for the catalog of im-ages available to you through the Control Panel in your cloud accounts. When adding an in-stance, the catalog of images will appear. You will choose the Data Center you wish to provi-sion an instance from and choose one of the available images. The images can be offered in any of the following licensing options: • BYOL: Bring your own license • DUO: Development use only • PAYG: Pay as you go • PRE-Release

IBM is covering the costs of your time spent in the cloud. We have set some parameters on the accounts to maximize capacity. While customers on the IBM Smart Cloud Enterprise can choose from multiple virtual machine instance sizes including Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum; the Academic Skills Cloud accounts are currently limited to Copper.

Additional storage options are not currently available in the Academic Skills Cloud accounts. Speak with your IBM representative if you have a requirement for additional storage.

To conserve capacity, please:

• Use only what you need for the class you are teaching. • Be sure to instruct users to Create private images of their running instances and Delete run-

ning instances before logging out of the cloud, when it applies to the class you are teaching. • Ensure all students remove all work in the cloud prior to requesting their removal from the

account at the end of the class. • Be timely with your requests to remove students who no longer require access to your cloud

account; you are responsible for their actions. When you established your account, you provided your Academic Initiative Relationship Man-ager (RM) with information about your planned use of the cloud, including the class where you will be using the product, the images to be used, the number of students, and duration of use. Your RM will contact you on a regular basis to keep this information current and to answer any questions you may have about the offering. Browser requirements

Help getting started Refer to the User’s Guide on the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise, and the section Where to go for support in this document for more information to help you get started. Once you’ve successfully signed into the account, you will be on the Overview tab. Launch the User’s Guide by clicking on the link in “Related links.”

Getting started considerations and best practices

• Be aware of what instances you are running at all times.

• Periodically check how long an instance has been running –we encourage you to not leave an instance running for longer than the class you are using it in. When you require it for longer, we encourage you to either follow the steps in the ‘How to save your in-stances as private images’ section if you have customized the instance in some way, or if you are using the software straight from the catalog simply start a new instance and delete the long running one.

• The Support forum is a valuable tool available to you. We encourage you to utilize it

by posting your question, please refrain from hitting the button to ‘Mail Community’

• Periodically, there are messages posted to the web portal with status updates. We en-courage you to subscribe to the ‘System status’ thread in the Support community. To receive these updates follow the steps in the Support section.

How to save your instances as private images

Image or instance? You’ll see these terms frequently as you interact with IBM’s Aca-demic Skills Cloud. Image refers to a pre-defined group of cloud resources (server or group of servers, supporting software, etc.), devoted to a par-ticular software product. For ex-ample, when you choose the im-age “IBM DB2 Enterprise Developer Ed RHEL 9.7.1,” an instance of that software will be created specifi-cally for you on a particular serv-er, or group of servers, with the hardware, memory, disk space and other resources needed to sup-port your instance.

A private image is a binary image saved by a user that can be used to re-provision new virtual machines through the Asset Catalog. Saving your instances as images conserves capacity and resources, therefore we request you save your instances as images whenever possible. To create a private image, go to the Control Panel and perform these steps: 1. Select the instance you want to save as an image. 2. Click the Create Image button.

Note: The instance will not be available for use while the image is being created. Once the process is complete, the instance will be available again. The time required to create the image depends on the size and contents of the instance. You can track the status of the process on the Control Panel.

3. Name your Private Image.

4. Confirm success and return to control panel.

The instance will not be available for use while the image is being created. The time required to create the image depends on the size and contents of the instance. Once the process is com-plete, the image will be visible in your catalog view under ‘My Images’. 5. Confirm the image capture: From the Control Panel, click Add an instance. 6. In the ‘View’ dropdown choose My Images. You will see your private image listed and can

now launch a new instance from it.

7. If appropriate, delete the previous running instance of the image to conserve capacity,

following the instructions in the section How to delete an instance. How to change visibility of a Saved image from Private to Shared Now that you have created a private image, you can choose to share it with the other users in the account. To change the visibility of your saved image from private to shared, go to the control panel and perform these steps:

1. Click on the Images tab. 2. Select the image you want to Share. 3. Click the Change Community button. 4. There will only be one community –choose it and Submit. 5. Confirm success and return to control panel. 6. Confirm the image is now in Shared visibility status.

4. Confirm on your Control Panel that you no longer have an active instance. Check the Compiled notifications area at the bottom of the control panel. This notification is confirming a successful creation of a Private Image and a removed instance leaving no running instances and conserving capacity.

Note: The contents of the instance are deleted when the instance is deleted. If you want to keep your work, copy important data to another storage system or save a private image before you delete the instance.

How to add and remove student IDs to and from your account As agreed to in the Academic Initiative Program Agreement and Addendum for IBM SmartCloud Enterprise Services, you are responsible for your students’ activity in the Academic Skills Cloud. We will add and remove your students’ IDs from your school’s ASC account at your request. Depending on your planned use of the cloud in your curriculum, your students may not need to have access to the provisioning portal. If your students do not require this access, you do not need to request their IDs be added or removed from your school’s account.

To add students’ IDs to the school’s account 1. Inform students of the offering and the terms of use you agreed to. 2. Request each student create an IBM ID if they do not already have one. To create an IBM ID

go to www.ibm.com and ‘Register’ in the upper right of the screen.

3. Inform the students that the Academic Initiative team will only use their IBM ID to add them to

the account and it will be handled according to the IBM privacy policy. 4. Compile each student’s IBM ID in the spreadsheet provided to you by your Relationship

Manager. 5. Return the completed spreadsheet to your Relationship Manager. 6. Your Relationship Manager will inform you when the students’ IDs have been added.

To remove students’ IDs from the school’s account 1. When students no longer need access to the account, instruct them to delete their instances. 2. Once you have confirmed all students have deleted their instances and images, send a

spreadsheet listing the students’ IDs (in the same format you used to request access) through email to your Relationship Manager.

3. Your Relationship Manager will inform you when the IDs have been removed from the ac-

count.

How to close your account If you no longer wish to participate in the Academic Skills Cloud, we can remove your access at any time. Please delete all active instances and any private images you created under your ac-count. Then contact your Relationship Manager by email to request your account be removed. NOTE: All student IDs for whom you requested access will also need to be removed at that time. If your students still require access, they will need to be sponsored by another active Ac-ademic Initiative member. Please work with your Relationship Manager to coordinate this ac-cess.
