The Tacoma Daffodil fest came in like a lion and out like a lamb. At the end of a breezy and bumpy ride to Tacoma, we were greeted at the entrance of Tacoma Yacht Club basin by two harbor masters in inflatables who directed us through a jungle of boats strung together in what could only be described as engineered chaos. These skilled navigators quickly had us through the maze and tied to the HHYC fleet where Sue and I learned about issues associated with power and sailing vessels rafting together. These issues were easily overcome due to our tolerant rafting partners V/C Mary and Brian. They graciously allowed us to pull apart their canvass and climb through their boat to get to the boat house that you needed to traverse to get to the dock. The fact that there was no rubber ducky awarded is amazing, especially for our boat guest Kelli who made the two foot jump from Brian and Mary’s cockpit to the boathouse with a drink in one hand and Pearl in the other. From the time we set foot in the club house the hospitality from TYC was nonstop. Decked out in our finest pajamas, team HHYC dominated the trivia contest until the final play when a bad call was made by yours truly leaving us with a second place finish. I now understand how coach Carrol feels. Following the trivia contest, I attended a commodore’s reception where I was able to meet a lot of terrific folks from our sister clubs while enjoying amazing food and wine provided by TYC. I was feeling a bit uneasy about peacocking around the next day in my skunk hat until I ran into Howard Gray, deck out in a
canary yellow suit with matching shoes and a black fedora. I didn’t think it was possible for Howard to top his past performances, but he found a way. Saturday evening we all stayed up late dancing in our PJs to a great band. Sunday morning following breakfast, I was able to relive my days in ROTC by marching in the flag ceremonies. It really was a moving event for me; I hope you all get the chance to participate in something similar. Pumped up by the fact that I still remembered how to march after 40 years, I quickly lined up R/C Dane, and V/C Mary on the side of the beautifully decorated Luna (thank you Kris) and practiced coming to attention and presenting a hand salute. They are both quick learners and did a great job throughout the parade. I will never forget what it felt like to pass a boat full of wounded warriors standing on the deck saluting us. I’m chocking up right now thinking about these wonderful individuals and what they have given for all of us. One of the primary items on my commodore’s bucket list is to get HHYC more involved with other clubs. The TYC Daffodil Fest was the perfect venue for accomplishing that objective. Kris and Bob, thank you so much for putting this wonderful event together.
