2nd Sunday in OrdinaryTime January 15, 2017

St. Francis Borgia, Washington, MO #242400

Notes from Fr. Joe Wormek

I received a le er from Father James Mason, President-Rector of the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. He wrote to congratulate us on the generosity to the Seminary from

our Christmas Collec on of $4,078. I personally want to thank you for your contribu ons to the forma on of our future priests of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Hopefully one of them will be assigned here at St. Frances Borgia in next 10 to 20 years.

We have completed the Christmas Season, and now we have six and half weeks before Ash Wednesday. This will give us me to catch our breath, work on our New Year promises and find some rou ne in our lives. Rou ne is a always good, because it gives us a schedule, which offers stability in our lives. Please be sure to take the me for daily prayer during the week and weekends, keeping the Mass in that rou ne. We must keep in mind, that you and I do not exist without God’s daily presence. The least we can do is think about Him every day, and hopefully more than once a day. God really does not need us, but we really need Him. Even though He does not need us, He loved us so much, that He sent His beloved Son Jesus, to die for us and free us from our sins, so that we can spend eternity with Him. Have a blessed week!

Thanks again for all you do!

Your Pastor, Fr. Joe Wormek [email protected] Cell: 314-609-1801

The Reach Out Ministry

The Catholic Reach-Out Ministry is offering another 12-week DVD series, The Catholic's Divorce Survival Guide. This series was created to bring hope and healing to divorced and separated Catholics through counselors, theologians and priests. The Program will be held on Thursday mornings beginning February 2 at 9:00 am - 10:30 am in the Garden Room of Notre Dame Hall. Please contact Jennifer Hill at the parish office for further informa on. (636-239-6701, x1511 or [email protected])

Is it true that a a Divorced Person is Automa cally Ex-

communicated from the Catholic Church?

The truth is that divorce itself does not affect or alter a person's status in the Catholic Church. Divorce is a func on of the civil law and secular courts. Alt-hough it has been a widespread misconcep on for many years, it is a myth that a divorced Catholic is "excommunicated," this is, not able to receive the sacraments within the Church.

A divorced person is not excommunicated from the church and the person can receive the sacraments.

St. Francis Borgia is teaming up with the Washington Police Department

Hello all, I would like to have a friendly compe on between the paro-chial schools and the police department. I would like to do a soda tab drive to collect soda tabs for the Ronald McDonald House and thought why not make it fun and have a compe -

on. I would like to have Borgia Elementary, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Immanuel Lutheran have a parochial school compe on to see who can collect the most soda tabs. Now here is the really fun part. The Washington Police Department is going to try and collect more soda tabs than any other school. There will be 3 separate compe ons: large schools, small schools, private schools. We are s ll thinking of a prize for the winner of the parochial schools. I would like to start this day one of 2nd semester and go through the end of April. On the first Saturday of May the Ronald McDonald house does a big collec on of soda tabs and I would like to team up with the police department and schools to take our total amount down and turn them in. Ins lling Grit: The Art of Raising Highly Self-Mo vated Kids

No, it isn’t your imagina on that children in our na on today seem more anxious and less independent. More en tled and less capable. More worried and less resilient. Why is this?

Come hear author and prolific speaker Amy Maus discuss how to ins ll grit, self-mo va on, and independence in our chil-dren, even when the current cultural climate pressures us to do the opposite.

Topics Include: How we create or suppress grit and internal mo va on in our

kids Today’s culture says: rescue, manage, and do too much for our

children Why anxiety is on a steep rise in our children and youth How to build independence, boost self-esteem, and create

Catholic Tradi ons

Some mes Catholic tradi ons are a stumbling block for our separated brothers and sisters. Topics that are normal to the average Catholic are some mes almost impossible to under-stand for others and therefore become a barrier to evangeliza-

on. One of the hardest topics to explain is our belief in the “Communion of Saints.” Many who are not Catholic view our prac ce of venera ng or “praying to” saints as idolatry, or even necromancy! These fears stem from a sincere desire to obey God’s commandments but a false understanding of our prayers to the saints. From a historical perspec ve venera on of the saints has always been a part of Chris anity – there is evidence of prayers to Peter and Paul in the catacombs! From a biblical perspec ve, one may explain in five steps. The dead are alive in heaven (Hebrews 12: 22-24), God hears their pray-ers (1 Peter 3: 12a), we are forever connected to them through Christ (John 15:5), we are called to intercede for one another in Christ (1 Tim 2:1-5), and they present our prayers to God (Rev 5:8). The Bible is common ground and these cita ons can foster further discussion and may open the way to further evangeliza on.
