From The Pastor’s Desk Yesterday, at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Jonathon Schmeckel was ordained to the priesthood. His ordination is the culmina-tion of many years of prayer, discernment, hard work and perseverance. It is also made possible by the support (spiritual and material) of many faithful Catholics. Join me in offering our most heartfelt congratulations to Father Jonathon Schmeckel!

Father Schmeckel received his first assignment from Archbishop Listecki. He will be serving the pastor and parishioners of St. Peter Parish in Slinger. We know that he will do very well in his ministry and be a great blessing to that community.

You are cordially invited to celebrate with Father Jonathon at all the Masses next weekend. He will be offering Mass and looks forward to visiting with you after Mass during hospitality in the Commu-nity Room. Please be sure to stop in and offer your personal well-wishes.

I am departing on Monday for my fourth (and last) summer of Canon Law studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. During my absence, Fr. Britto has been appointed the Administrator of the parish. Should you need to reach me during the summer, the best method is through the mail. My address is: 400 Quincy Street, NE, Washington, DC 20017. You can be as-sured of my prayers for you during the next few months. Please pray for me. I look forward to returning to St. Alphonsus in time for the Feast on the Blacktop on Friday, August 2. Mark your calendar, and I will see you there!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

-Fr. Aaron J. Esch

Safety For Our Parish And School At this year’s Benefit Auction, we conducted a special fundraiser for “Safety 2.0,“ the next step in improving the safety of the Parish and School. The Fund-A-Need focus this year is on the lights in the main church/school parking lot. We are planning to convert the fixtures to LEDs so they are much brighter, more efficient, and do not have to be changed as often (if ever). The total cost is about $30,000. We raised just over $17,700 at the Auction for this project. Can you help us meet our goal? Please consider donating to this important improvement to our parish grounds. You can drop your donation in the collection basket, or mail it to the Parish Office. Please mark it as Park-ing Lot Lights, or Fund-A-Need.

Thank you for your consideration!

2019 Catholic Stewardship Appeal Update As of April 8, St. Alphonsus has received pledges totaling $67,655 from 312 donors, which is 42% of our Parish goal of $163,000.

There is still time to donate to this year’s Catholic Stewardship Appeal. Our many thanks to those who have graciously pledged funds so far this year! -Bill & Mary Kelly, St. Alphonsus 2019 Catholic Stewardship Appeal Co-chairs

Announcing The Pastoral Council 2019-2020 On May 9, in a spirit of prayerful discernment, St. Alphonsus Pastoral Coun-cil confirmed Mary Binder, John Hauerwas, and Linda Witkowski as new Council members for a three-year term, beginning July 1. Ella Drzadinski and Evan Smazal were also confirmed as Youth Representatives, for a one-year term. Denna Flemming and Mike Mellock were confirmed for a second three year term. A Stewardship Moment In today’s Gospel, Jesus makes a bold and clear statement to his disciples. “I give you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” We are called to love others as a sign of our discipleship in Jesus Christ. That includes even those “others” we might prefer to forget. We are so often tempted to draw lines between those who we will love and those who we consider not worthy of our love. This week take time to reflect on Jesus’ love command. How often do we heed Jesus’ love command? What change in our lives must take place in order for us to obey this command?

School Scene This year, 5th Grade students have set sail for the New World and established colonies in a Colonial Simulation, compared the strengths of the Continental Army and Brit-ish troops in a simulated basketball game and wrote letters and diaries from the colonial point of view. All these were to enable students to experience events from long ago and recognize the challenges of America’s early years.

This month, we’ve been studying the Westward Movement with Escape Rooms in which students had to solve several puzzles to get clues to the secret code. Pictured are some students who successfully read the information about ei-ther the Lewis and Clark Expedition or the Oregon Trail to find answers to puzzles that unlocked clues. Once they had found the four digits of the secret code, they unlocked the treasure box. Beyond reviewing the historical events, students also worked collabora-tively with others, worked on extended reasoning and critical thinking skills. They just might have had a little fun too!

Christian Formation Registration Registration is now open for the 2019-20 Christian Formation classes (grades 5K-11/Confirmation). Registration forms and information about the enrollment process are availa-ble on the Faith Formation page of the St. Alphonsus website or at the parish office. Call the Christian Formation office at 414-421-2442, if you have any questions. Please note that the Christian Formation Office will be closed May 30 – August 19, 2019. Any registrations and tuition payments received during that time will be processed when our office reopens.

Christian Formation News Our Christian Formation students, along with gen-erous donations from families and parishioners, created Easter baskets that were donated to St. Anthony School in Milwaukee. Our goal is to reach out in community to our brothers and sisters in faith during our most treasured Catholic season. I would like to thank the dedicated people who have started this tradition long before me. I also wish I could share the smiles and joy it brought as we dropped them off, but this picture will have to do! -Julie Petri, Director of Christian Formation

This weekend is my last two groups of First Communicants. First Com-munions have truly been the highlight of my job each year. I have watched students over the years grow in knowledge, maturity and faith, as they prepare for this very special Sacrament. I have worked with families for 19 years in this job and 9 years before that in our day school. For the past couple of years, I have had students whose par-ents I had as students. I have loved being a part of the faith develop-ment of so many people.

Here are a few reflections from this year’s Communicants: Communion brings Jesus inside me, so I can live a better

life with God. Eucharist means that the Bread isn’t just bread, it is the

Body of Christ and the wine isn’t just wine, it is the Blood of Christ.

It means to me that I can eat and drink the body and blood of Christ, which makes me closer to Jesus.

If I eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ, I will become a better follower of God and participate in church more!

I’m excited to share God’s bread and wine. I’m proud of myself for making my First Communion. My family is happy for me!

I need to thank all the many people who volunteered/helped me in the many areas of the program over the past 20+ years. I could never be successful without all of your help and support. You are truly the heart of the Christian Formation program. To people in the parish, if you have never found an area in the parish to get involved, especially if you love working with young people, consider volunteering. It is so rewarding, and you will learn more about your faith than you ever thought possible. I know I did!

So this is not really goodbye. Though I am no longer employed or part of the Pastoral Staff, St. Alphonsus has been my home for over 30

years, and we intend to stay here. I will see you around!

-Kathy Monacelli

Cycles Of Faith Do you have enough? Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but to thrive - food, shelter, mental ability, in-come, access to medical care. Most people in human history lived with far less than we. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the "prosperity Gospel." This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life.

That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking." What gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they'd ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him."

Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes "give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God? You showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship?

Question Of The Week Theme: Jesus commands us to love one another! Question for Youth: The world is full of examples of people who don’t love others. What are the results of hate that you see in the world? How would the world be different if we followed Jesus’ commandment? Question for Adults: Jesus’ commandment to love another is a challenge. What will you do this week to deepen the love you have for those around you in life?
