The Transition from Grade 8 to 9O Our goal is to help grade 8’s make a smooth transition to high
school. To help ease the transition, we have planned the following
events:
O Tour of Pinetree- January 24th , 2020 1:00pm – 3:00pm
O Visits to Middle Schools-programming in March
O Articulation meetings with teachers at the middle schools in
early Spring (April)
O Grade 9 Orientation – last week of August
O (Led by our Alphawolves)

Elective ChoicesO VISUAL ARTS 9- learn skills in drawing, painting, collage, mixed
media, printmaking, paper mache, and photography
O BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY 9- Students will learn about advertising, money, communications and creating their own businesses using computer software programs. This course is an excellent foundation of business knowledge and skills and introduces students to the senior business education curriculum
O PERFORMING ARTS 9- Drama, Dance, and Musical Theatre
O FOODS & NUTRITION 9- Explore great food and food culture. A “hands – on course”
O FITNESS 9- designed for students looking to improve their performance as well as their fitness levels. Includes core muscle training, cardio workouts, advanced weight training. Note: this is an elective in addition to PE 9.

skills in every aspect of technology from graphic design and animation to programming and web design and film.
O WOOD WORK 9- learn to safely use tools and equipment to design, create and finish your own projects. . We learn and practice skills, so we can build cool things to make us proud. Be active, productive and have fun!
O ENGINEERING AND DESIGN 9- get challenged to solve problems and design solutions that you can build or test! In the past, students have built C02 dragsters, Rube Goldberg (engineer/inventor) machines, mobiles, balances and more!

Pinetree Honours ProgramO What type of student is the AP/Honours program designed
for? O Gifted students, extremely talented and motivated students.O Students who enjoy hard work and being challenged in class.
O What are the advantages of an Honours class? O Students of similar abilities and interests work together in an
enriched environment. O Students develop their higher level thinking skills. O Students participate in the subject areas that match their
talents. O Honours courses help prepare students for AP courses.
Pinetree Honours ProgramO How are students selected for the grade 9 Honours
classes? O Pinetree Secondary staff carefully will review the entrance
exam results to determine which students are most suitable and require the program to meet their specific educational needs.
O Students will be informed of the placements through a letter they receive in the mail.
O Can I prepare for the entrance exam(s)? O No, the assessments are designed to test students’ higher
order thinking skills.
Pinetree Honours ProgramO After cross boundary is completed
then registration can occur for the assessments.O Grade 8 students will complete an
online application from that reserves as spot at the testing session.
O Website to register will be available from March 4th 9am – March 9th 4pm.

O Only those students living in Pinetree’s catchment and those approved for cross-catchment to Pinetree will write the Honours Assessment(s)
